DeDRM AppleScript for Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7
This AppleScript includes and combines the python scripts for removing the DRM from Mobipocket (ancient and modern), Kindle and Kindle for Mac (Mobipocket and Topaz formats), eReader, Barnes & Noble ePub, Adobe Adept ePub and Adobe Adept PDFs. There is no need to install Python (it uses the default installation that comes with Mac OS X). There is no need to install PyCrypto (the new python scripts use OpenSSL that comes with Mac OS X). There is even no need to install the Mac OS X developer tools (everything needed is installed with the standard Mac OS X installation). The current version of the AppleScript application is 5.1 and it can be found in the large tools zip archive mentioned in the first post of this blog.

Macupdate.com: TCPBlock for Mac - Lightweight and fast application firewall.
I've been using TCPBlock for 6 weeks now, and have concluded that it blows Little Snitch and Hands Off! right out of the water. It has alerted me to MANY, MANY callouts that have been happening right under Little Snitch's nose ever since I started using it 5 years ago. I have studied LS to death, reinstalled it 6 or 7 times just to rebuild my rules lists from scratch in order to figure out how so much traffic get’s past it, and subjected my rules lists and standard operating procedures to the scrutiny of serious IT professionals and a couple of hard core hackers, so now I'm extremely confident that Little Snitch's weaknesses and outright failings are indeed Little Snitch's — not mine, as I let myself believe for far too long. TCPBlock is so much less complicated yet more effective than both LS and HO that I spent a couple of weeks second guessing whether my conclusions are as accurate and stark as I think they are, only to arrive at the same verdicts all over again. So I have officially deactivated LS and now rely entirely on TCPB. If anyone else has had the same sort of doubts about Little Snitch or Hands Off over the years, do yourself a favor and install TCPBlock, then run it side-by-side with Little Snitch (or Hands Off!) for a week or two. After you get over the short learning-hump, you'll be amazed.

Block-level full disk encryption would be a huge win, eliminating dependence on PGP, which is pretty close to abandonware at Symantec (a recent 10.5 dot release corrupted PGP WDE drives, for instance). Presumably, if it's cool enough to have a brand name at Apple, it'll also gracefully handle hibernation, which no FDE currently does.

FileVault 2 Benchmarks Show Full Disk Encryption is Faster Than Ever in OS X Lion
Bottom line: if you have a Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 processor, you’ll barely notice the impact of disk encryption, regardless of whether you’re using an SSD or traditional platter drive. Is a tiny performance hit worth the peace of mind of total data security? You’ll have to decide, but if you have sensitive data and a newer CPU on your Mac, it probably is.

For a more in-depth look, type “man diskutil” and search for the core storage command documentation.

Cnet.com: Review: Drive defragmentation and optimization with iDefrag
Apple's philosophy for hard drive optimization and defragmentation is explained in this knowledgebase article and is basically that they do not recommend it unless it is absolutely needed (I tend to agree). To combat the majority of file fragmentation, OS X already has robust built-in anti-fragmentation technologies that prevent fragmentation of files on creation and use; however, they are only applied to files that are under 20MB in size. Because of this, defragmentation will provide the most benefit to those who regularly manage a large number of files that are over 20MB in size, but it will also help for those who have nearly full drives that are regularly used (e.g. Time Machine volumes).

TileMill
TileMill is a tool for cartographers to quickly and easily design maps for the web using custom data. It is built on the powerful open-source map rendering library Mapnik - the same software OpenStreetMap and MapQuest use to make some of their maps. TileMill is not intended to be a general-purpose cartography tool, but rather focuses on streamlining and simplifying a narrow set of use cases. For anyone coming from a GIS or cartography background, the biggest assumption TileMill makes is the final projection - TileMill maps are always projected to ‘Web Mercator’. As the name suggests, this projection is popular with web mapping applications, thus maps created with TileMill can be displayed using the Google Maps API, OpenLayers, and a number of other projects. News.ycombinator.com: I've seen so many of these VPN-for-rent services that this is becoming an obliga...
Here's how to tunnel on OSX via ssh:
ssh -fnNMD 8080 -S ~/.tmp-ssh-socket you@server.you.own && sudo networksetup -setsocksfirewallproxy Airport localhost 8080

Then when you're done:
ssh -S ~/.tmp-ssh-socket -O exit localhost && sudo networksetup -setsocksfirewallproxystate Airport off

That will set your ssh server as the system-wide socks proxy.

Granted I don't have the time to wrap a pretty UI around it, but those commands work, and I trust my own servers more than any service. If anyone does have time to wrap a pretty UI around it... OpenCloak could exist mere hours after the commercial project went into beta :)

You can create your own arenas using built in editor, and you can save your fractal images at any resolution. There are many parameters you can change for entirely new, original look; the number of combinations is astronomical. Why OS X just doesn't cut it
OS X has been gimped for a long time, when it comes to package management – we’ve gone through fink, the awful ports system, and now homebrew. All this to get a slice of the Unix pie. But none of these offer a complete package-management system like that offered by Arch Linux. Homebrew, the only sane choice not only has a tiny package repository, but has been pretty unreliable in my experience, when it comes to installing things with a lot of dependencies, such as Haskell or couchdb. Why the OS X Menubar should be dark and not bright
The OS X Menubar is that light-grey thing stuck to the upper edge of the screen. It’s stationary (with the exception for “fullscreen” modes) and thus is always visible. OS X Isn't for Developers
Apple had about 2.06 percent of the US desktop market in 2003. By 2010, OS X had about 10.9% of the market.1 There’s a slew of reasons for this growth, but I think a large part of it is the migration of software developers from Windows to OS X starting in the early 2000’s. Attracted by the reasonable UNIX toolchain and the straightforward usability approach, more and more geeks adopted OS X as their primary machines, saw it also doubled as a decent computer for non-techies, and its popularity grew from their recommendations.
