Stallman.org: How I do my Computing
7 weeks ago by mikael
I firmly refuse to install non-free software or tolerate its installed presence on my computer or on computers set up for me. However, if I am visiting somewhere and the machines available nearby happen to contain non-free software, through no doing of mine, I don't refuse to touch them. I will use them briefly for tasks such as browsing. This limited usage doesn't give my assent to the software's license, or make me responsible its being present in the computer, or make me the possessor of a copy of it, so I don't see an ethical obligation to refrain from this. Of course, I explain why they should migrate the machines to free software, but I don't push them hard, because that would be counterproductive.

Why (and how) we've switched away from Google Maps
december 2011 by mikael
OpenStreetMap's great strength is that anyone can contibute. Since the project started over 500,000 people around the world have signed up to do just that, often going into insane levels of detail. Fixes can be added and reflected in the maps very quickly. It is a fundamentally different model than the traditional "only an expert from the government can come make the map" model. People can map whichever features are important to them (paths, pubs, buildings, etc) and escape the car centric focus of many mapping services. All of this data is then made freely available for all to use. Increasingly government agencies are realising that it makes more sense to cooperate with and benefit from this new approach to data gathering and maintenance. september 2011 by mikael
The application works in real time and has been developed using openFrameworks. The program uses Jason Saragih's c++ library for face tracking which creates a mesh that matches the contour of the eyes, nose, mouth and other facial features. TileMill
september 2011 by mikael
TileMill is a tool for cartographers to quickly and easily design maps for the web using custom data. It is built on the powerful open-source map rendering library Mapnik - the same software OpenStreetMap and MapQuest use to make some of their maps. TileMill is not intended to be a general-purpose cartography tool, but rather focuses on streamlining and simplifying a narrow set of use cases. For anyone coming from a GIS or cartography background, the biggest assumption TileMill makes is the final projection - TileMill maps are always projected to ‘Web Mercator’. As the name suggests, this projection is popular with web mapping applications, thus maps created with TileMill can be displayed using the Google Maps API, OpenLayers, and a number of other projects. HTTP Archive
june 2011 by mikael
Successful societies and institutions recognize the need to record their history - this provides a way to review the past, find explanations for current behavior, and spot emerging trends. In 1996 Brewster Kahle realized the cultural significance of the Internet and the need to record its history. As a result he founded the Internet Archive which collects and permanently stores the Web's digitized content. In addition to the content of web pages, it's important to record how this digitized content is constructed and served. The HTTP Archive provides this record. It is a permanent repository of web performance information such as size of pages, failed requests, and technologies utilized. This performance information allows us to see trends in how the Web is built and provides a common data set from which to conduct web performance research. Bitstorm — A lightweight Bittorrent tracker

Most Bittorrent trackers today comes with functions that not everyone may need, such as torrent indexing software, forums and ratio management. Bitstorm tries to implement the very basic tracker protocol in a simple and easy way. It has no forums, no login requirement and no other bloat. It is easy to configure and install on any web server that supports the PHP scripting language. Please note that Bitstorm wasn't meant to be run on high-traffic sites that receives 10+ announces per second. If you expect to have more than 1000 peers, consider using some other software. This is a limitation of using text file databases. (There is a MySQL version of Bitstorm, see below.) [ http://torrentfreak.com/bitstorm-the-worlds-most-simple-bittorrent-tracker-110616/ ]

Waybackmachine.org: What’s the difference between the classic Wayback Machine and the new BETA test version?
january 2011 by mikael
The Wayback Machine (WM) was first launched in 2001 using proprietary software written by Alexa Internet. A few years ago, the Internet Archive wrote our own version of the Wayback and made that software open source. We have been hosting smaller collections using the newer, open source software but had not attempted to transfer the entire, web wide collection to use the new software… until now! The BETA test software and index are designed to be faster than the classic WM. The two other biggest differences you’re likely to notice are the new toolbar on archived pages, and the new look of the calendar of page captures. The new toolbar will hopefully make it easier for you to know what date you’re looking at, move through time more quickly using the sparkline of captures over time, and do new searches without having to leave the page you’re looking at.

Why GIMP is Inadequate
january 2011 by mikael
GIMP is perhaps one of the most well known imaging apps available in Libre software. Its virtues are endorsed by many in the Libre software community. In a practical sense however, within North American art and design circles, its uptake is effectively zero. There are reasons behind this, although any attempts to tackle the issues have a tendency to erupt into nothing more than hyperbole and animosity, leaving behind the core issues at hand. This is an attempt to outline three key reasons why some graphic artists and designers perceive GIMP as inadequate when it comes to its suitability in their imaging pipelines.

january 2011 by mikael
TorChat is a peer to peer instant messenger with a completely decentralized design, built on top of Tor's location hidden services, giving you extremely strong anonymity while being very easy to use without the need to install or configure anything. There exists a less commonly known mode of operation in which two Tor clients can initiate a fully encrypted peer-to-peer connection between each other that will not leave the Tor network at any point! This is what TorChat is using. Both clients build a normal 3-hop circuit from each end to some random tor node in the middle to "meet" there and connect their circuits with each other. Upon connection another layer of encryption is established reaching through from one client to the other, building one uninterrupted encrypted tunnel over all 5 hops between both clients. This means all TorChat traffic is end2end encrypted.

The Apple-sponsored ZFS implementation, first available as a read-only kernel extension in 10.5 and later in the developer builds of 10.6, was unceremoniously yanked from the shipping version of Snow Leopard (10.6), after a lengthy hiatus from the open-source project hosted at the now defunct http://zfs.macosforge.org. A nabble backup of the old mailing list is available at http://mac-os-x-zfs-discuss.19757.n3.nabble.com/ Since ZFS adopted a dedicated following under Mac OS X, there's a desire to keep this project going; this code project will be used to record issues and ongoing development (if any) of this extension. Idg.se: "Oracle vill döda MySQL"
december 2010 by mikael
