Zero-Permission Android Applications
7 weeks ago by mikael
The first privileged access area is the SD Card. Every application has at least read-only access to the contents of this external storage. ''No Permissions'' scans the /sdcard directory and returns a list of all non-hidden files. While it's possible to fetch the contents of all those files, I’ll leave it to someone else to decide what files should be grabbed and which are going to be boring. It's worth noting that even though the Android developer docs state that there's no security enforced upon files stored on external storage, many things are stored on the SD Card, including photos, backups, and any external configuration files -- on my own device, I found that OpenVPN certificates were stored on the SD card (which I promptly corrected!) Secondly, I can fetch the /data/system/packages.list file to determine what apps are currently installed on the device. From there, I can scan each directory used by those applications to determine whether sensitive data can be read from those directories. In the ‘’No Permissions’’ app, this functionality returns a list of installed apps and a list of any readable files. When testing this on the Android emulator, I am only able to read the app's own directory, but when testing on a real device, I am able to read some files belonging to other apps. This feature could be used to find apps with weak-permission vulnerabilities, such as those that were reported in Skype last year. The third action I was able to take was to grab identifiable information about the device itself. Without the PHONE_STATE permission, it's not possible to read the IMEI or IMSI, however the GSM & SIM vendor IDs can still be read. The /proc/version pseudofile, which reveals the kernel version and possibly the name of the custom ROM installed, can also be read. In addition to those identifying values, the app reads the Android ID, which is a 64-bit number randomly generated when a device is first booted and remains constant thereafter. More information about the Android ID is available in the Android Developer Docs.

Here’s the rub: Instgram is a fucking photo app that a competent team could build at a weekend hackathon. Its revenue model: presumably selling user data down the road. After all, its users aren’t going to start paying for something that they used to get for free, and that they can get for free elsewhere. Think about how many damn photo apps there are in the market. Think about it again. One last time.

Xda-developers.com: [APP] Tinfoil for Facebook
9 weeks ago by mikael
There are ways for them to "track" the sites you visit on the browser if you log in to *.facebook.com and stay logged in on your browser. Don't know the specific details, but one way they can do this is by using the "Like" buttons on some of the sites, they can get the user id of the logged in session (cookies) as well as the site you are visiting, and track you. Anyways, Tinfoil for Facebook has its own CookieManager, so that you can log in using this app to *.facebook.com and not through the browser, so that whenever you browse sites on the regular browser, there's almost no way for them to track you. Again, I don't know the full details of how and if they track you, and nobody knows EXACTLY how they do it except for them, I'm just trying to prevent this as much as possible, somehow, I don't trust facebook. Also, this app doesn't allow them to use location, unless you enable it, and a couple of other things.

Ubuntu.com: Ubuntu for Android
february 2012 by mikael
Ubuntu for Android requires minimal custom hardware enablement, allowing fast and cost-efficient core integration. It requires a core based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or any subsequent version. Ubuntu and Android share the same kernel. When docked, the Ubuntu OS boots and runs concurrently with Android. This allows both mobile and desktop functionality to co-exist in different runtimes. Shared services and applications are delivered using a Convergence API module which ensures the tight integration between desktop and mobile environments. Work is balanced across the cores of the phone. When the handset is not docked, both CPU cores transfer their full power to Android.

Mobile Sites vs. Apps: The Coming Strategy Shift
february 2012 by mikael
As of this writing, there's no contest: ship mobile apps if you can afford it. Our usability studies with mobile devices clearly show that users perform better with apps than with mobile sites. (Mobile sites have higher measured usability than desktop sites when used on a phone, but mobile apps score even higher.) The empirical data is really all you need to know. It's a fact that apps beat mobile sites in testing. To plan a mobile strategy, you don't need to know why the winner is best, but I'll try to explain it anyway. Mobile applications are more usable than mobile-optimized websites because only limited optimization is possible during website design. An app can target the specific limitations and abilities of each individual device much better than a website can while running inside a browser.

Androidcommunity.com: no .gif support for mms?
january 2012 by mikael
The phone itself supports the Gif format. However it doesn't support the animated version by default. The reason being is Android doesn't parse the Gif image's slides as an animated clip (no idea why specifically). In apps, we have to basically provide each slide to an animation container and tell it to animate. It's lame but gets the job done.

Gigaom.com: Galaxy Nexus + data plan + VoIP support = free calls!
december 2011 by mikael
When I bought my unlocked Galaxy Nexus, I figured that I’d simply use the SIM card in my iPhone 4S with the handset. Instead, I pulled the T-Mobile SIM out of my Samsung Galaxy Tab. I’m glad I did because I discovered a very appealing scenario. By using the data-only SIM — which costs me $40.00 per month for unlimited texts and data — with a new Android 4.0 feature, I’ve turned the Galaxy Nexus into a VoIP phone: I can get or receive calls solely through Wi-Fi and mobile broadband networks without subscribing to a voice plan.

Forbes.com: Android App Turns Smartphones Into Mobile Hacking Machines
august 2011 by mikael
Dangerous hacks come in small packages. Or they will, perhaps, when an app called Anti, or Android Network Toolkit, hits the Android market next week. The program, which Israeli security firm Zimperium revealed at the Defcon hacker conference in Las Vegas Friday and plans to make available to Android users in coming days, is designed for penetration testing–in theory, searching out and demonstrating vulnerabilities in computer systems so that they can be patched. Anti aims to bring all the hacking tools available to penetration testers on PCs to smartphones, with an automated interface intended to make sniffing local networks and owning remote servers as simple as pushing a few buttons.

Comparing Android and iOS security: How they rate
august 2011 by mikael
Android uses a vastly different approach. It is based on “all or nothing.” I’ll let Nachenberg explain: “Each Android app contains an embedded list of permissions that it needs in order to function properly. This list of requests is presented to the user in non-technical language at the time an app is installed on the device, and the user can decide whether or not to allow the app to be installed based on their tolerance for risk. If the user chooses to proceed with the installation, the app is granted permission to accessall of the requested subsystems. On the other hand, if the user chooses to abort the installation, then the app is completely blocked from running. Android offers no middle ground.”

Mobile devices or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the iOS
july 2011 by mikael
I was an Android user for quite some time and don't regret it. But honestly: Android devices aren't able to compete with the iPhone in the same market segment. iOS is mostly much more fun to use, the platform itself is more mature, there is a ton of really well implemented apps and the iPhone4 itself is just a great device. Of course, Android is more open than iOS and there are things an Android device can do which are just not possible or forbidden by Apple on iOS. But know what? - These corner cases don't bother me any more. I've been using my iPhone for a few months now. Even in the first days I was able to do more useful stuff with it than I ever did on Android in almost two years. At the moment I'm really pleased with the experience on iOS, but I'm also curious if this is the case in two years from now. Buy an Android phone if you want a smartphone that works and does its job. Buy an iPhone if you care about user experience and want a smartphone that works really well.

Stopping Screenlock Smudge Attacks On Android
june 2011 by mikael
The core problem with the Android screenlock is that it's entered via the touchscreen, which leaks a considerable amount of information through the greasetrail that your fingers leave behind. The paper "Smudge Attacks on Smartphone Touch Screens" examines the efficacy of this attack in great detail. Even after using a phone for several minutes after an unlock, as well as after having the phone in your pocket, smudge trails still remain usable. [ http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2609037 ]

It doesn’t need to be this way, and we want to help. So we’re happy to announce that Google Maps Navigation (Beta) will now automatically route you around traffic. Arstechnica.com: Fake keyboard: PCs hacked with custom Android USB drivers
january 2011 by mikael
A pair of researchers presenting at the Black Hat DC conference are showing off an amusing new attack against laptops and smartphones that is initiated simply by plugging the phone into the PC. In a way, it's an obvious attack. Instead of making a USB-connected smartphone appear to a host computer as a phone, make it appear to be a mouse or a keyboard—and then use that mouse or keyboard to take control of the computer. The computer can't tell a real keyboard with real user input apart from a fake one, so is powerless to prevent exploitation. The researchers also described how such an attack could propagate; the phone could install malware to the PC that would in turn install malware to any new phones.

From the outset, BeejiveIM is just another multi-network messenger. It has support for all of the usual suspects -- AIM, Yahoo, MSN, GTalk, Jabber, ICQ, MySpace IM, and even a very nice Facebook chat interface. What sets it apart from its clunky brethren, of which there are many, is the user interface. The UI (and I apologize for this cliché) is an absolute dream. The ease at which you can carry out conversations across multiple networks is almost superior to desktop apps.
