Dn.se: Nätjättarna vill veta allt om dig
7 weeks ago by mikael

I don’t think you browse like I do
february 2012 by mikael
This only came to light this week when some of my friends were asking about the virally spread link to Google and who Google thinks you are: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences . Some of my friends were shocked by the accuracy, others were amused by being a decade younger, or offended by being a decade older. Very few had the wrong sex. I can tell you what Google’s advertising preferences think of me: Nothing. This isn’t by magic, it’s just a by-product of the way I browse. I don’t leave any traces locally, and unless I log in to a service they don’t know who I am. Additionally, even if I log in to identity tracking services such as Google, Twitter or Facebook, then those services only see a very small view of what I do as I segregate such browsing from the rest of my use of the web. Adblockplus.org: Adblock Plus and (a little) more: Blocking malicious sites with Adblock Plus
september 2010 by mikael
I was reading about yet another wave of attacks exploiting a Flash vulnerability. It turned out that the Flash vulnerability used was already fixed but that doesn’t really matter — Adobe seems incapable of updating users to a secure Flash version in a timely fashion. So Firefox users were at risk here as well, and the continuing waves of SQL Injection attacks inserting malicious iframes into trusted websites didn’t exactly make the situation better.

Over the last few months I’ve noticed an annoying trend on various web sites, generally major newspaper and magazine sites, but also certain weblogs. What happens is that when you select text from these web pages, the site uses JavaScript to report what you’ve copied to an analytics server and append an attribution URL to the text.

We’ve seen a lot of feedback regarding the text that gets added to the bottom of email messages sent from Hotmail and some other email providers. In the image above, you can see an example of this text, “Hotmail goes with you. Get it on your BlackBerry or iPhone.” We call this text a tagline, and we’d like to address this pretty simply – we’re getting rid of it.

Two Greco-Roman wrestlers. Interesting. If they were elderly Greco-Roman wrestlers, that might be a pitch for those new growth-hormone supplements, but you're too young for that. You're sure they were Greco-Roman? There's an ad with women in Mexican wrestling masks for a pill treating stress incontinence. I suggest patients avoid pro wrestling for a few months before trying that particular pill.

Facebook Using YOUR Face for Ads
july 2009 by mikael
“Peter” in this case is the Facebook user logged in to his account. The woman in the “Hot Singles” ad is his own wife. According to Facebook, these ads “respect all privacy rules.” Personally, I think it’s just a nice obvious bit of proof that Facebook is truly sleezy under all the pretty blue makeup. Luckily there is a quick and easy opt-out for this nonsense, steps follow.

Adblock Plus and (a little) more: Attention NoScript users
may 2009 by mikael
What followed was a small war — the website would add various tricks to prevent Adblock Plus with EasyList from blocking ads, EasyList kept adjusting filters. Then, a week ago a new NoScript version was released. A few days later I noticed first bug reports — apparently, Adblock Plus “glitches” were observed with this NoScript version, especially around NoScript’s domains (but not only those). When I investigated this issue I couldn’t believe my eyes. NoScript was extended by a piece of obfuscated (!) code to specifically target Adblock Plus and disable parts of its functionality. The issues caused by this manipulation were declared as “compatibility issues” in the NoScript forum, even now I still didn’t see any official admission of crippling Adblock Plus. Clearly, NoScript is moving from the gray area of adware into dark black area of scareware, making money at user’s expense at any cost.

GlimmerBlocker
february 2009 by mikael
The problem with other ad-blockers for Safari is that they are implemented as awful hacks: as an InputManager and/or ApplicationEnhancer. This compromises the stability of Safari and very often create problems when Apple releases a new version of Safari. GlimmerBlocker is implemented as an http proxy, so the stability of Safari isn't compromised because it doesn't use any hacks. It is even compatible with all other browsers. You'll always be able to upgrade Safari without breaking GlimmerBlocker (or waiting for a new release); and you'll be able to upgrade GlimmerBlocker without upgrading Safari. This makes it much easier to use the beta versions of Safari and especially the nightly builds of WebKit.

Telegraph.co.uk: Networking site cashes in on friends
february 2009 by mikael
Facebook is planning to exploit the vast amount of personal information it holds on its 150m members by creating one of the world's largest market research databases. In an attempt to finally monetise the social networking site it will soon allow multinational companies to selectively target its members in order to research the appeal of new products. Companies will be able to pose questions to specially selected members based on such intimate details as whether they are single or married and even whether they are gay or straight. The company has been demonstrating the benefits of its new instant polling tool to some of the most influential business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Randi Zuckerberg, Facebook's global markets director and sister of founder Mark Zuckerberg, 24, said multinational companies had been bowled over by the ability to receive real-time feedback from the site's millions of users.
