Quora: How big of a library can iTunes handle?
october 2011 by matthewmcvickar
‘For most people today (9/27/2011) running a typical system, try not to go over 30,000 songs if you value the user experience. There is no doubt this will not be an issue in the future.’

Marked Bonus Pack (scripts, commands and bundles)
october 2011 by matthewmcvickar
Vital. ‘The Marked Bonus Pack is a collection of scripts, commands and services. Some work with multiple editors, some are specific to certain editors. The Services will generally work with any editor that has the necessary capabilities. The rest are organized in folders based on the application they work with.’

I should install this.
“Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to manually edit Unix configuration files like /etc/passwd, and lets you manage a system from the console or remotely.”

Brett Terpstra: Create TextExpander Group Download URL
april 2011 by matthewmcvickar
“Select a group and enter your preferred prefix for the shortcuts assigned to each snippet. The resulting url may be downloaded as a custom .textexpander file, or used with TextExpander’s ‘Install from URL’ feature. Using the latter will provide automatic updates if the group is added to or changed, custom prefixes are preserved.”

Prevent security risks from stuff like Firesheep.
“When you connect to the Internet through an unprotected wireless network, such as at a coffeeshop or an airport, where you don’t have to enter a security key, you’re putting yourself at risk. Attackers connected to the same network can easily intercept your unencrypted traffic and log in as you to services such as Facebook, Amazon, and LinkedIn.”

SuperUser: Terminal Tips and Tricks: Quick Screenshot Sharing via Dropbox
july 2010 by matthewmcvickar
Get your Dropbox variables right in the provided script, save it as a .sh file in your ~/Library/Scripts folder, assign it to a shortcut in FastScripts, and you're a keyboard shortcut and a few seconds away from taking a screenshot and having it automatically uploaded to a public folder. Awesome, and doesn't rely on imgur like csexton's captured (http://github.com/csexton/captured), which I was also investigating.

Daring Fireball: Ronco Spray-On Usability
august 2008 by matthewmcvickar
On the characteristic lack of usability in open source projects, and why. "The distributed, collaborative nature of open source software works for developer-level software, but works against user-level software. Imagine a motion picture produced like a large open source project. Different scenes written and directed by different people, spread across the world. Editing decisions forged by group consensus on mailing lists. The result would be unfocused, incoherent, and unenjoyable."
