ignore the code: User Experience Myths
Keith Lang has temporarily abandoned his usual digs and written an essay for carsonified.com. Titled Top 10 UX Myths, it contains a number of common false or misguided beliefs about user experience design. It’s worth checking out the whole well-researched article, but I want to pick out a few of his myths and comment on them.

Roulette — Jack Cheng
Apophenia is the name for our brains’ tendency to seek patterns in random data, like looking at the blinking vertical sign next to the roulette table and thinking you know what the next number is going to be. I believe it’s also the reason New York feels so special. When you cram millions of people onto a tiny island, you start noticing what seems like more than mere coincidence. In a place like New York, that wheel gets spun so much more frequently—the friction generates so much more data to pick from—that your apophenia’s working in overdrive. Sooner or later, you notice the same number come up a few times in a row and it feels like magic.

Design Minutae
Finishing a significant consumer software application is essentially a process of nailing down a profusion of tiny details like the ones Torrez calls out here. It can seem like death by a thousand paper cuts, and it becomes even more painful when you realize that you can’t market based on polish, and no user will laud you for making sure a button is properly disabled, an icon is perfectly aligned, or a design is properly thought out. One of the hardest things about shipping Birdfeed was staying committed to slaving away on such minutae while other, often less polished, clients beat me to market.

Evolution of a Header | GarrettDimon.com
If there's anything I've learned about designing web applications in recent years, it's the fact that things change over the course of a project. Learning to embrace that fact and direct it towards a productive evolutionary process has made a significant impact on my work.

Choices - Joel on Software
Every time you provide an option, you're asking the user to make a decision. That means they will have to think about something and decide about it. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but, in general, you should always try to minimize the number of decisions that people have to make.

Create the Filter | Dustin Curtis
The only thing that matters to a company of any size is its product and customer experience. That's it. That's what creates value. The number and type of people who work at a company do not matter. The bureaucracy that develops to manage those people does not matter. The only thing that matters is what gets ultimately produced by the entire system of an organization. If you think of it this way, then you can't be influenced by the ridiculous inertia of political crap that has developed internally. If there are deficiencies in the product or experience that leads to decreased value for the customer, it’s because some part of the system is broken. So you fix the system in such a way that you cannot produce bad products or experiences. Those fixes might include things like a reduction in workforce, hiring more talented employees, or changing bureaucratic rules. It doesn't really matter as long as the product improves. But how to know when the product is improving?
