Letters from the Hellbox.
january 2010 by mattb
I need a hook right now, because if you've read much writing about typography, you're probably only granting me a paragraph or two to grab your attention. At least that's the attitude I carry going in to writing on letters. Many type essays, despite good intention, are bristling with academic narcissistic maximalism—sometimes to cover up that there is really only a paragraph of content or so, sometimes in an attempt to raise writing about typography to the beauty and evocative mystery of type itself. Such an important subject, so difficult to deliver— which is ironic since the words themselves are set in the subject. But the beauty of the letters is inconsequential unless the text it's rendering carries its own weight. The opposite is also true: a poorly typeset work of genius will render the work difficult to comprehend and the reader will not blame the type, they'll blame the writer.

Ombudsman – Wikipedia
november 2009 by mattb
An ombudsman (English plural: conventionally ombudsmen) is a person who acts as a trusted intermediary between an organization and some internal or external constituency while representing the broad scope of constituent interests.
Usually appointed by the organization, but sometimes elected by the constituency, the ombudsman may, for example, investigate constituent complaints relating to the organization and attempt to resolve them, usually through recommendations (binding or not) or mediation. Ombudsmen sometimes identify organizational roadblocks running counter to constituent interests.

On Language - How Fail Went From Verb to Interjection - NYTimes.com
november 2009 by mattb
Spend some time on the Internet, and you’ll start to see a peculiar usage of the word fail popping up everywhere. A conservative blog posts an image of a United States-Russian diplomatic agreement with the president’s name spelled “Barak Obama” and calls it “White House Spellcheck FAIL.” Atlanta Braves fans take out their ire on outfielder Jeff Francoeur (since traded to the New York Mets) by changing his name to “Failcoeur.” On Twitter, disgruntled CNN-watchers complain about the network’s coverage of protests in Iran under the banner “CNNfail.”

Evolution of a Header | GarrettDimon.com
july 2009 by mattb
If there's anything I've learned about designing web applications in recent years, it's the fact that things change over the course of a project. Learning to embrace that fact and direct it towards a productive evolutionary process has made a significant impact on my work.

Web designers should do their own HTML/CSS - (37signals)
july 2009 by mattb
"The web is a world of constraints, the materials of HTML and CSS flex and give in ways that encourage particular styles. And being able to understand and bend within that scope is what makes a design feel native. Designers who work directly with the materials rather than through simulated environments like Photoshop are at a distinct advantage for making that happen."

Choices - Joel on Software
july 2009 by mattb
Every time you provide an option, you're asking the user to make a decision. That means they will have to think about something and decide about it. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but, in general, you should always try to minimize the number of decisions that people have to make.

On Permanence
february 2009 by mattb
The problem is that when we’re in front of that blinking cursor, everything is so easily editable that we get caught up in do-mode. When we try to review things, we think, “oh, that’s an easy fix, so I’ll do it right now,” and instantly return to do-mode. We keep bouncing back and forth between the two without maintaining the proper altitude to see the bigger picture. To use the forest-from-the-trees analogy, it looks something like this:

There Is No God : NPR
february 2009 by mattb
I believe that there is no God. I’m beyond atheism. Atheism is not believing in God. Not believing in God is easy — you can’t prove a negative, so there’s no work to do. You can’t prove that there isn’t an elephant inside the trunk of my car. You sure? How about now? Maybe he was just hiding before. Check again. Did I mention that my personal heartfelt definition of the word “elephant” includes mystery, order, goodness, love and a spare tire?
