Before you try either, apparently it's worth deleting the cache files CASPartCache.package, compositorCache.package, scriptCache.package, simCompositorCache.package in My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3. Doing so shouldn't affect the game, though some people claim to have lost installed custom content by doing so.
