Mandolin sheet music and instructional materials from the "Golden Era"

Here are some digital copies of mandolin music published during the Golden Era of mandolin activity in the United States. Many of these items have been loaned to me by my friends in the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra who have inherited a large collection of music from the old Chicago Mandolin Orchestra. My intention is to only include music that is clearly in the Public Domain. Please let me know if you hold a current copyright to any of this material and would like me to remove it from this archive.

Hello, I'm Stan Jay, President of Mandolin Brothers, Ltd. Have you ever asked yourself "what's it worth?" If you own or if you have been offered a vintage American guitar, a banjo or mandolin or electric bass and wish to know its current market value, just call and ask us for advice. Or better yet, drop us a line on email. In case you're wondering, the guitar I'm holding in the photo is not a guitar at all. Actually, it's a gumball machine. We don't sell gumball machines (more's the pity) but we felt it was a welcome change from my holding a guitar. This picture was taken on The Pier at Huntington Beach, CA on a day in January when all flights in and out of New York were canceled due to a blizzard. You cannot imagine how happy I was to be in Southern California on that day. If you would like to experience a feeling not unlike the feeling I had that day, watching the surfers and the seagulls, all you have to do is pick up the phone and order a nice guitar, banjo or mandolin from us. It'll make you feel so much better.

Mein Name ist Adrian Karperien (ADI). Geboren wurde ich am 10. Mai 1989 in Rheine/Mesum. Derzeit studiere ich an der Hochschule für Musik Köln Standort Wuppertal im Studiengang "Bachelor of Music". Mein Hauptfach ist Mandoline und Nebenfach Gitarre.
Neben dem Studium beschäftige ich mich mit dem Bau, Pflege und Reperatur von Zupfinstrumenten. In der Bildergalerie findet ihr dazu auch Beispiele. Außerdem interessiere ich mich für PA-Anlagen und Recording.

Nato nel 1987, inizia a studiare mandolino all’età di 12 anni e a 19 anni, sotto la guida del M° Mauro Squillante, si diploma brillantemente presso il Conservatorio Piccinni di Bari risultando, in tal modo, il più giovane diplomato in Mandolino in Italia. Segue MasterClasses di alto perfezionamento musicale con Mauro Squillante, Dorina Frati, Ugo Orlandi, Fabio Menditto e corsi di musica antica ad Urbino, a Napoli presso la Pieta’ de’ Turchini e a Cava de’ Tirreni con l’Accademia “Jacopo Napoli”.

Although the F-5 is no doubt the Reigning KING of Mandolin design, I do feel there is room for exploration in both the visual and acoustic aesthetic of the instrument as a whole.

Gerda Abts behaalde een eerste prijs mandoline met grote onderscheiding en een eerste prijs kamermuziek bij Florean Heyerick aan het Koninklijk Vlaams Muziekconservatorium te Antwerpen. Zij behaalde het hoger diploma mandoline aan de Hochschule für Musik te Wuppertal, bij Marga Wilden-Hüsgen. Het hoger pedagogisch diploma behaalde Gerda Abts met grote onderscheiding aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven. Zij volgde een meestercursus te Wenen bij Prof. Vinzenz-Hladky.
Gerda Abts concerteerde met de grootste orkesten van België zoals het Symfonisch Orkest van de Munt, de Vlaamse Opera, de Filharmonie van Vlaanderen, het BRT-orkest en tal van kamerorkesten, zoals Champs d’Actions, het Beethoven-ensemble en Prima Musica. Zij speelt vaak de mandolinepartij in opera’s, zoals Othello van Verdi, of Don Giovanni van Mozart, o.a. meermaals met de bariton José Van Dam. (De laatste cyclus van Don Giovanni was in december 2003 in de Munt.) Gerda Abts trad ook op in Oostenrijk, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Nederland en Spanje, en vertolkte enkele stukken op cd. Zij speelde in duo met gitaristen als Myriam Bogaerts, Emanuel Sarens en Roland Broux. Gerda Abts was soliste bij het Brasschaats mandoline-orkest, het Antwerps Mandoline-orkest en Concortium Mandolinata van Boechout.foto Abts met concertmandoline
Gerda Abts geeft les in mandoline en samenspel aan de muziekacademies van Lier (afdelingen Lier en Nijlen), Wijnegem (afdelingen Schilde en Zoersel Sint-Antonius), Brasschaat en Merksem (afdelingen Merksem en Sint-Job in 't Goor). Zij is tevens gastprofessor aan het conservatorium van Antwerpen en aan het Lemmensinstituut te Leuven.

Florentino CALVO a effectué ses études musicales à l’Ecole Nationale de Musique et de Danse d’Argenteuil, haut lieu de l'enseignement de la mandoline en France. Il y obtient un Premier Prix dans la classe de mandoline de son professeur Mario MONTI. Dans ce même établissement, il suit le cours de guitare du Maître Alberto PONCE et la classe d’Analyse et d’Harmonie de Gérard CASTANIE. Il se perfectionne également auprès du mandoliniste Ugo Orlandi lors de masters class.

Il se produit régulièrement au sein de l’Orchestre du Théâtre National de l’Opéra de Paris, de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain, de l’Orchestre National de France, de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, de l’orchestre de Paris et avec de ensembles tels que Ars Nova, l’Itinéraire, Collegium Novum , Diabolicus ………….
Membre co-fondateur du Triopolycordes avec la harpiste Isabelle Daups et le guitariste Jean-Marc Zvellenreuther, il se consacre au répertoire contemporain et est dédicataire d’œuvres de Klaus Huber, Alexandros Markéas, Alain Louvier, Philippe Schoeller, Régis Campo, Frederick Martin, Ivan Bellocq, François Rossé, François Laurent, Christian Lauba, Zad Moultaka, Stephen Leach, Gilles Carré, Luis Naon, Carlo Carcano, Michèle Reverdy, Alain-Michel Riou…….
Il se produit régulièrement seul, avec orchestre ou en musique de chambre avec Maurice Chancelade (piano), Sophie Teboul (piano)
Avec la claveciniste Maria-Lucia Barros, il interprète le répertoire original pour mandoline et basse continue du 18ème siècle sur copies d’instruments d’époque
Avec Aline Zylberajch, il forme un duo qui fait redécouvrir le répertoire original existant pour mandoline et pianoforte (Beethoven, Hummel, Neuling, Bortolazzi) sur copies d’instruments d’époque.
Son intérêt pour les cordes pincées l’a conduit à pratiquer, au gré des rencontres avec différents musiciens et compositeurs, d’autres instruments tels que la mandole, le mandoloncelle, le bouzouki et le oud.
Depuis 1991, il dirige l’orchestre à plectres l’Estudiantina d’Argenteuil et depuis 2000, l'Orchestre A Plectre Régional Rhône-Alpes.

Depuis 1995 , il encadre, aux côtés du Maître Alberto Ponce un stage international de mandoline au sein de la fondation Kruger (Mas de La Coume) à Mosset, près de Prades
Son goût des rencontres et son éclectisme l’ont conduit à travailler pour le cinéma ou le théâtre: on peut citer par exemple sa participation à la création et aux multiples tournées de « Momo » de Pascal Dusapin , mis en scène par André Wilms pour TM.
Il est professeur titulaire de la classe de mandoline au CRD d’Argenteuil depuis 1988 et vient d’être nommé professeur de mandoline au pôle supérieur d’enseignement artistique Paris/Boulogne Billancourt.

Informationen über Simone Salvetti und eine CD mit seinen Kompositionen

TRENTA MUSICISTI DAL GIAPPONE - Una trentina di musicisti provenienti dal Giappone, desiderosi di visitare i luoghi in cui è nato e cresciuto il Maestro Simone Salvetti e di suonare nella sua cittadina natale, giungeranno venerdì 30 aprile a Breno per rendere omaggio al musicista e compositore brenese nato il 30 gennaio 1870 e molto più conosciuto all'estero che non in patria. Ad organizzare questo evento, ed a mantenere i rapporti con i cittadini nipponici, è stato il presidente della Civica Banda Musicale di Breno, Tonino Taranto, avvalendosi della collaborazione dell'Amministrazione Comunale Brenese.

Infine, i due gruppi suoneranno insieme alcuni pezzi proprio di Simone Salvetti: il “Mormorio del mare”, intermezzo del 1905 dedicato “All’amico carissimo Piero Geppi” e la “Poesia alpestre” ouverture del 1926 per il “Maestro Lissoni direttore del circolo mandolinistico di Monza”. Già da qualche anno, la banda del paese sta studiando e approfondendo la figura di Salvetti, con l’obiettivo di rivalutare l’immagine dell’illustre maestro brenese, molto conosciuto a cavallo tra l’Ottocento e il Novecento per le sue musiche per chitarra e mandolino.

Nasce nel 1908 per iniziativa del Dr. Egidio Tempini e del Maestro Simone Salvetti di Breno; dopo una sosta forzata, dovuta alla grande guerra, riprende la propria attività nel 1928 sotto la guida del maestro Bortolo Ghetti, che la dirige fino al 1985 con passione e dedizione esemplari.Dopo la scomparsa dell’anziano Maestro, le sorti della banda sono rette provvisoriamente dalla Signorina Amalia Maffessoli, nel 1988 inizia la collaborazione con l’attuale Maestro Roberto Giacomelli di Breno.

Nato a Breno nel 1870 e morto a Darfo nel dicembre 1932 il M.o Salvetti è a Darfo negli anni ‘20 come maestro della locale Banda.
In possesso di non comuni qualità artistiche che aveva perfezionato con studi regolari presso il conservatorio di Parma, visse sempre da Bohemien, accontentandosi dei proventi che gli venivano dal dirigere alcune bande, e da rare prestazioni come organista.
Compose molti brani per gruppi mandolinistici e con uno di questi, “Mormorio del mare”, vinse anche il primo premio al concorso indetto dalla rivista il Mandolino nel 1905. Della sua permanenza alla direzione della nostra banda abbiamo solo testimonianze tramandateci dagli anziani, i quali lo descrivevano come un maestro molto esigente ma anche molto affabile nei fuori servizio.
Difatti si racconta che finito l’impegno ufficiale, quando incominciavano le fanfarinate, aderiva alle richieste dei suonatori e immediatamente componeva dei ballabili che dedicava agli stessi suonatori, i quali dovevano eseguirli quella sera stessa.
Nell’archivio della banda di Breno abbiamo potuto recuperare alcuni brani originali per banda anche se incompleti.
Due di questi, il valzer “Sere d’Autunno” e l’episodio sinfonico “Liberty”, dopo una attenta ricostruzione del M° Alberti, li abbiamo inseriti nei concerti per il centenario.

Geboren in Brentwood in 1870 und starb im Dezember 1932, ist die Mo Darfo Salvetti Darfo in den 20er Jahren als ein Meister der lokalen Banda.
Im Besitz der ungewöhnlichen künstlerischen Qualitäten, die er mit regelmäßigen Studien am Konservatorium von Parma perfektioniert hatte, wie er immer gelebt Bohemien, zu der Überzeugung gelangt, dass der Erlös von einigen Bands, sowie seltene Leistung als Organist gerichtet waren.
Komponierte viele Lieder für Mandoline Gruppen und einer von ihnen, "Rauschen des Meeres", gewann auch den ersten Preis beim Wettbewerb der Zeitschrift Mandoline im Jahre 1905 organisiert. Von seiner Tätigkeit bei der Leitung von unserer Band haben wir nur Zeugnisse von den Ältesten, die ihn als Lehrer sehr anspruchsvoll beschrieben, aber auch sehr freundlich in den off-duty übergeben.
In der Tat ist es so, dass die endgültige offizielle Verlobung, als sie die fanfarinate begann, auf die Anforderungen von Spielern eingehalten und sofort zusammen den Tanz, die sich die Spieler, die laufen an diesem Abend gewidmet hatte.
In den Archiven der Band konnten wir einige Breno Original-Songs von Band wiederherzustellen, selbst wenn sie unvollständig.
Zwei von ihnen, der Walzer "Evenings of Autumn" und die sinfonische Folge "Liberty", nach einer sorgfältigen Rekonstruktion des M. Alberti, haben wir in dem Konzert für die Hundertjahrfeier enthalten.
