What if I asked you what comes to mind when you think of a mandolin ? … Do you see where I’m going with this?

Although the F-5 is no doubt the Reigning KING of Mandolin design, I do feel there is room for exploration in both the visual and acoustic aesthetic of the instrument as a whole.

Gamut Music, Inc. specializes in early music strings and instuments made by Dan Larson, luthier. Instruments include viloins, Rennaisance and Baroque lutes, guitars and vihuelas, as well as steel string guitars.

Gamut provides gut strings in many styles suitable for early music instruments.

Daley Mandolins
For over a decade Sim Daley has worked on some of the finest instruments for some of the finest musicians. The knowledge gained from working with such players as Adam Steffey, Dan Tyminski, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Roland White, Aubrey Haynie, not to mention considerable time spent studying the Loar period F-5's, led Sim to open his own shop and build the finest mandolin available today!

Fletcher Brock has distinguished himself as one of the top mandolin family instrument builders in North America, building around 15 instruments per year. To inquire about pricing or get on the list please contact Fletcher. While Fletcher primarily builds custom instruments to order, he does on occasion have some for sale, it's always worth inquiring.

New York City and nearby New Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester County have been home to a vibrant Italian American population since the late nineteenth century. Within this community, a remarkable tradition of lutherie (stringed-instrument making) has flourished. Italian American craftsmen have produced an enormous variety of musical instruments, from traditional European-style violins, mandolins, and guitars to newer American instruments such as archtop guitars and mandolins and even electric guitars. Since the 1930s, makers from this tradition in the New York region have become especially well known for their extraordinary archtop guitars. This exhibition examines the work of three remarkable craftsmen from this heritage—John D'Angelico, James D'Aquisto, and John Monteleone—their place in the extended context of Italian and Italian American instrument making, and the inspiration of the sights and sounds of New York City.

Making instruments is a deep and rewarding involvement in music. From choosing and carving the tonewoods to executing details and fine-tuning the setup, I strive to build in musical potential to be unlocked in the hands of skilled players. I draw my inspiration from the classical Italian violinmaking tradition, my training, and personal exploration and study of modern lutherie.

Musician and Luthier

I have played music for many years, it has always played an important part in my life. My grandfather, Joseph Campanella, brought his mandolin with him from Calabria, Italy as a young immigrant. My mother, Antoinette Campanella Cleary, played violin as a girl and adult with community orchestras, and sang in church choirs and vespers. My father, Thomas Hugh Cleary, experienced music in his large Irish-American family, and was heavily influenced by his two piano-playing older brothers. His instrument was guitar, which he used to lead mass, as a Jesuit priest in Honduras. Music and singing was inextricable from our family life, at home and at church. My younger brother John has been a long-time musical partner--from high school talent shows to regional and national shows with our own string band based in Vermont. My older brother Jesse lives in Carrboro, NC and plays old-time banjo. Now I am lucky enough to be able to pass this gift on to my children, and enjoy the rewards of a musical family.
