Andersen Stringed Instruments History | Archtop Guitar Luthier
I built my first guitar in 1973 in Phoenix, AZ. I was in high school physics class, and a friend who also played guitar told me about a shop he had visited over the weekend. He said they were making guitars, and in fact anyone could go in and build a guitar for a small fee. Well, I went to check it out, and it was true. The shop was open from noon to midnight and the owner would help you build a guitar. I was 17, a junior in high school, and to me, this was pretty cool stuff. I signed on to build a 12-string guitar. It took about six months, but I ended up with a guitar I had made myself, and I was hooked.

murray kuun | designer and luthier of original design guitars
I have always been a great lover of music, that is what all this is about, music! That, and my love for good design, I have always designed. I started making violins in the 1990′s after a chance meeting with Michaelangelo’s David in Firenze. After tiring of making the same violin over and over, and over, I moved over the guitar design and building where the scope for new design is a bit wider than in violin making.

I do not make copies of instruments that have gone before, only original instruments designed by myself. I am able to customise many of the designs shown on this website.

Fine Mandolins and Violins
Making instruments is a deep and rewarding involvement in music. From choosing and carving the tonewoods to executing details and fine-tuning the setup, I strive to build in musical potential to be unlocked in the hands of skilled players. I draw my inspiration from the classical Italian violinmaking tradition, my training, and personal exploration and study of modern lutherie. I create instruments which are powerfully voiced, yet transparent to the will and skill of the player. I've chosen to honor my maternal grandfather and namesake, Joseph Campanella, a craftsman and mandolinist, with my instruments. Please contact me with any questions or to find out how to acquire your own "little bell".

Big Muddy Mandolin
In 1972, Mike bought a banjo that had an oddball neck on it so he and his brother decided to build a new neck for it. The seed was planted about building things.

Moving to North Idaho in 1976 he ran into two guys who were building guitars and they hired him. He worked there for five years. Rooming with RL (Bob Givens), Givens mandolins and guitars, he worked off and on with Bob during the slow times at the guitar shop. Post full time building, the next 12 years found him repairing instruments in music stores, gaining much insight into the 'how' instruments were constructed.

1993 found him moving to Missouri where he took odd jobs, one of which was teaching guitar at a local music store. One day, while waiting for a very tardy student, he waltzed over to the banjo and mandolin display. He picked up a brand name mandolin and noticed three things. The price tag of 900 dollars, the fact it was made out of plywood and it had nothing in the way of ‘good tone’.

To the garage he went.

Starting out alone, he developed what is now Big Muddy Mandolin. Reaching out to one dealer at a time he then created a market via word of mouth. As the mandolins got more exposure and more in demand he began hiring one person at a time until he reached three full-time and two part-time employees. Reaching a total of nearly one thousand mandolins a year.

Hamm-tone Guitars and Mandolins - Home
N. Jeremy Hamm (Hamm-tone) grew up in southern Ontario. His father, Nicholas Hamm III, was a mechanical engineer for John Deere for 30 years, and his grandfather was the mandolin player for the original "Lincoln County Peach Pickers", the first recorded bluegrass band in Canada from the early 1950's on. It was only fate that he fused his two strongest character traits, mechanical ingenuity and musical intuition, to become a popular and successful guitar builder in Canada.
From an early age he took piano lessons, then began studying the classical violin at age 7 until the end of highschool. Playing in the Niagara Youth Orchestra, high school jazz band, concert band, numerous bluegrass, country and rock bands, his musical knowledge runs deep. He is not only a respected luthier, but a respected musician in the Canadian music scene.

Earnest Instruments | Uncommon Musical Instruments
EARNEST INSTRUMENTS are created for musicians who require functional, distinctive, high quality tools for making music. These are not your garden variety music store axes, but uncommon musical instruments designed to meet the needs of innovative players looking for something a little different. Rather than build reproductions of standard manufactured items, EARNEST combines time-tested styles and designs to create unique, original instruments with a classic appearance. Every effort is made to build the finest sounding and playing instruments. Their expense results from the quality of the materials and workmanship rather than unnecessary detail or excessive ornamentation. Materials are chosen for utility, tone, and appearance. Domestic and lesser known exotic tonewoods are favored over rare, overpriced, and often endangered species. Natural and manufactured materials are combined with appropriate adhesives and fasteners, at optimum humidity, to insure the stability and durability of the instruments. Earnest Instruments are built for a lifetime of music making!

Wynn Mandolins - 1970- 80's Wynns
Located in the Ozark hills is a small red barn that sits behind the home place of John Wynn. Since 1975 this has been the home of Wynn Mandolins. A self-described tinkerer who has spent his life taking things apart to see how they work he started this business to fulfill his dream of building quality musical instruments. With a focus on banjos and mandolins John Wynn began by seeking out those in need of having their musical instruments repaired. When he discovered that he needed to add to his income in order to feed the family, John began building mandolins and banjos.

Having experimented with building a few mandolins in California before moving back to Missouri, John Wynn found that there were customers in need of quality hand-made instruments. In fact, one of the first mandolins he built upon the pattern of an old "F-Style" Gibson was quickly purchased by a music store for $550 in 1973. At that point John Wynn knew he had a talent that would later become his life-long passion.

Building Instruments of Distinction -- Lock Mandolin Company
If I asked you what comes to mind when you think of a guitar , what would you say? Flat-top? Classical or Steel string? Maybe it’s an Archtop ? Maybe an Electric? Or , maybe it’s not even a guitar…hmm.?

What if I asked you what comes to mind when you think of a mandolin ? … Do you see where I’m going with this?

Although the F-5 is no doubt the Reigning KING of Mandolin design, I do feel there is room for exploration in both the visual and acoustic aesthetic of the instrument as a whole.

This is the Challenge that inspires me – to build beautiful sounding mandolins , that intrigue the eye as well as the ear . Instruments built as individual entities , Instruments that inspire creativity

Guitar Heroes | The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
New York City and nearby New Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester County have been home to a vibrant Italian American population since the late nineteenth century. Within this community, a remarkable tradition of lutherie (stringed-instrument making) has flourished. Italian American craftsmen have produced an enormous variety of musical instruments, from traditional European-style violins, mandolins, and guitars to newer American instruments such as archtop guitars and mandolins and even electric guitars. Since the 1930s, makers from this tradition in the New York region have become especially well known for their extraordinary archtop guitars. This exhibition examines the work of three remarkable craftsmen from this heritage—John D'Angelico, James D'Aquisto, and John Monteleone—their place in the extended context of Italian and Italian American instrument making, and the inspiration of the sights and sounds of New York City.

f you're looking for a unique, original, high quality, completely hand built instrument at an affordable price, you may have come to the right place.

On the other hand, if you're looking for an instrument manufactured in a large factory by a production line of workers and machines and that looks and sounds like thousands of others, you might want to look elsewhere.

All of my instruments are built one at a time, from start to finish, using traditional methods and hand tools.
