Harvest was founded by Danny Wen and Shawn Liu in 2006, at a small office in downtown New York City. During the years leading up to launching Harvest, we ran a web design studio called Iridesco. As our business grew, we looked for tools to help us scale. We searched for a way to easily track time and invoice for our services. We wanted a well designed application that took user experience seriously. We wanted a service that innovated with technology.
We couldn't find one...
So we decided to invest our own time, energy and money into creating what we knew was a better way to run our business – and Harvest was born.
Harvest was immediately embraced by other small businesses looking for a simpler and better way to work. Today, Harvest serves the time tracking and billing needs of thousands of customers around the world, from freelancers to small businesses to departments within Fortune 500 companies.
Harvest is headquartered in New York City, at a large loft office in Soho. We’re independent and profitable, with our customers as our only investors. Each day we come together to listen to our users, solve problems and continue to improve our service.

nvALT 2 is a fork of the original Notational Velocity with some additional features and interface modifications, including MultiMarkdown functionality. It has been developed by Elastic Threads (David Halter) and Brett Terpstra, and made available for free (donations accepted).

Vanilla is a new kind of forum. We've taken away all of the features that we don't think are absolutely essential, and we've added a few new ones that we think are pretty neat. Just try it out, and we promise you'll like the changes!

VanillaForums.com is our hosting service where you can sign up online and have a forum created for you. You can then enable premium feature upgrades to take your forum to the next level.

VanillaForums.org is our open-source site, where developers, fans, and users can download and use the open-source software for free, as well as upload and share their add-ons, and get involved by helping each other out on the community forums.

There's a key piece of magic in the engineering of the Internet which you rely on every single day. It happens in the TCP protocol, one of the fundamental building blocks of the Internet.

TCP is a way to transmit data that is reliable. By this I mean: if you send a message over a network using TCP, it will arrive, and it won't be garbled or corrupted.

We use TCP for many things like fetching web pages and sending email. The reliability of TCP is why every exciting email from embezzling East Africans arrives in letter-perfect condition. O joy.

By comparison, there is another method of transmitting data called IP which is unreliable. Nobody promises that your data will arrive, and it might get messed up before it arrives. If you send a bunch of messages with IP, don't be surprised if only half of them arrive, and some of those are in a different order than the order in which they were sent, and some of them have been replaced by alternate messages, perhaps containing pictures of adorable baby orangutans, or more likely just a lot of unreadable garbage that looks like the subject line of Taiwanese spam.

Apple has strict video encoding guidelines for its devices, and popular encoding tool Handbrake's default presets are a little out-of-date. So we put together our own presets optimized for creating both iPad and iPhone 4-optimized video in Handbrake.

So, we code web sites by hand. And one day, it hit us: our web workflow was wonky. We’d have our text editor open, with Transmit open to save files to the server. We’d be previewing in Safari, adjusting SQL in a Terminal, using a CSS editor and reading references on the web. “This could be easier,” we declared. “And much cooler.”
