Guest Informant: Anonymous (@ warrenellis.com)
" What really made the whole Anonymous thing real for a lot of people and what got them out on the streets wasn’t a like-minded horde of V for Vendetta mask wearing types all marching as one that they wanted to join, but the fact that due to international time zones, the first protest was held in Australia and there was a good turnout, and this protest almost immediately generated an iconic image that’s oddly now almost forgotten as the V for Vendetta mask has become a prominent symbol. It was a teenage girl, in a Hello Kitty T-Shirt and a gas mask. "

How to Fund an American Police State (aka Weaponizing the Body Politic) (Stephan Salisbury | Fabius Maximus)
" With Occupy protesters gearing up for a spring resurgence, Salisbury spells out just what activists will be up against — think unmanned drones, tanks, and super-sophisticated surveillance systems from New York City to Scottsbluff, Nebraska — in the months ahead. "

Is protest contagious? (David S. Meyer @ Politics Outdoors)
" People who look at potentially successful protests elsewhere and imitate them make judgments, often implicit, about how similar their own situation is. These judgments don’t have to be right in order to be powerful. "

Occupy "citizen journalist" is Anti-Cop Provocateur (Alan Kurtz | AllVoices)
" Due to slim pickings, OakFoSho assembles only a 12-person crew. Undeterred, he exhorts them to "go ahead and make something happen right now." Pointing to his left, OakFoSho advises: "We can get out of sight by just walking that way for about 50 yards." One of Oak's recruits interrupts their deliberations to shout at a passing police cruiser driven by a female officer. "Go home, you fascist bitch!" To pad his crew to a baker's dozen, OakFoSho rousts a homeless guy sleeping under a blanket against a light pole. No sale. Homeless Guy prefers to sleep in peace, thanks all the same. "

“Reckless destruction of life” (@ California Catholic Daily) 2010-05-25
" On May 14, said the LLDF statement, Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, “a Christian pro-life organization dedicated to activating and educating high school and college age individuals, was present to protest the dedication of this expansive facility that touts its reputation in the area of human embryonic stem cell research. The group was there to share a message that human embryonic stem cell research kills human lives!”

" “The pro-life activists consulted the Life Legal Defense Foundation concerning their free speech rights prior to the planned demonstration,” said the statement. “Despite several attempts by the police to move the demonstrators away from the dedication ceremony, the Survivors were able to make their voices heard on the UCI campus, and LLDF attorneys were on hand to answer calls and speak with law enforcement on the day of the event. We at LLDF were proud to defend these brave activists’ rights to speak the truth and to stand against the reckless destruction of life at the new facility.” "

a social movement society? (Brayden King | orgtheory)
" In their essay outlining the social movement society thesis, Meyer and Tarrow (1998b) ask, ‘‘Has something fundamental changed in the politics in contemporary industrial democracies?’’ We answer that in terms of the overall level of protest participation and in the types of people who demonstrate, there has been no fundamental change. We find only a slight trend toward greater participation in demonstrations during the past 35 years, and that cohorts born after the Baby Boomers are much less likely than their parents to have participated in a protest, although we note a small resurgence among individuals born in the 1980s. Combined with the lack of social and demographic diffusions, this suggests that the United States may have a social movement generation, but it is not a social movement society (pg. 146-47). "

The “Twitter Can’t Topple Dictators” Article (Jay Rosen @ Pressthink)
" A real grown-up understands that the question is hard, that we need facts on the ground before we can start to answer it. Twitter brings down governments is not a serious idea about the Internet and social change. Refuting it is not a serious activity. It just feels good… for a moment. "

Egypt's military rejects swift transfer of power and suspends constitution (Chris McGreal, The Guardian)
" The army's announcement, which included the suspending of the constitution, was a further rebuff to some pro-democracy activists after troops were sent to clear demonstrators from Cairo's Tahrir Square, the centre of the protests that brought down Hosni Mubarak. "We do not want any protesters to sit in the square after today," said the head of the military police, Mohamed Ibrahim Moustafa Ali. "

Egypt's generals impose martial law (Craig Whitlock, Sudarsan Raghavan, Washington Post)
" Egypt's military called Monday for an end to the strikes and protests that have practically paralyzed the country since late last month, but thousands of police and other state employees took to the streets to demand better pay and working conditions, and pro-democracy leaders vowed to keep demonstrating if their demands for change are not met. Military falls out with protesters over Egypt's path to democracy (Chris McGreal, The Guardian)
" The military leadership gave no timetable for the political transition, and many of the demonstrators who filled Cairo's Tahrir Square for 18 days rejected the military's appeal to dismantle the barricades and go home. They said they were waiting for specific commitments from the military on their demand for a civilian-controlled interim administration, the lifting of the oppressive state of emergency and other steps toward liberalisation.
