" Don't get me wrong; I don't think anyone owes themselves to any issue or cause they don't want to be part of. This is all volunteer work, after all. And I never expected Chanology to remain at the level it began. Gregg is right to point out that everything changes. I will always be grateful for what Chanology brought (and still brings) to the fight. It was unprecedented. Even if everyone who came around then went away it will always have been a beautiful thing. And they WON'T all go away; many will stay and I think that whatever Chanology is will never be totally dead. Pulses have merged in many ways, as the original video also predicted.

" But I do have the feeling that the rather unfocused, ill-considered "Freedom of Information" stuff (and there's more I'll say on this later) has been artificially forced to the forefront by a few - including monopolizing the entry page - and is muddling the message for people who come to the site due to getting the url from anti-Scientology protests and critics. "

" Funny, I remember Gregg being in marblecake and then coming up with WWP to recentralize this thing after Enturb went down. In 2008 we had marblecake (which Gregg was in) and in 2010 we still have marblecake (Which Gregg is still in). And if we didn't still have Marblecake why is this guy always on the phones to people who he perceives as "leaders" of their local cells to try to convince them to join him in his FoI campaign. You know, I remember you when you would fight for freedonia, not kiss the ambassador's asshole while he rapes it of its splendor. "

Battling Scientology (Chris Faraone, The Boston Phoenix)
" There was, however, a lack of organization. So on January 17, Housh and four other Anons broke off into a separate channel that they specifically created to discuss press strategies. “A few people were saying that there should be a press release,” says Housh. “There were five of us at that point, and one guy said he was a writer, one was a proofreader, and I had some good ideas for structure. We started pounding it out, and by the end it looked more like a video script than a press release. Then the other two guys said they were into video and had the tools, and one of them said they had some creepy cloud footage. The next thing you know, we have ‘Message to Scientology’ up on YouTube on the 21st.” "

" With users separated into dozens of geographic groups by locale — including London, Boston, Tokyo, and Southern California — one member of the original press group (who has remained anonymous) reportedly realized that there was potential to take the project to another level if they could mobilize manpower off line. “We were just screwing with the Scientologists because it was fun to screw with them,” says Housh. “But one guy was saying that, if we actually did something and the organization really went somewhere, then we’ve changed the face of activism on this planet for good.” "

" Many months ago, just after the feb 10th protests, a massive e-mail list was compiled with about 27k e-mail addresses of editors and high-profile journalists. That list was not handed out to anonymous as a whole, because that list is to be used for strategic press releases.

" There was a bit of a (minor) power struggle between (the now defunct) #marblecake (who were incredibly valuable in the early days of our movement) and the enturbulation moderators with respect to how press releases are to be made. Marblecake had made many of our most-viewed videos, and wanted to script our press releases too. Some of us on enturbulation wanted the press releases to be made open-source on the forums, emphasizing our transparency.

" Some of each went out. Thankfully the person in possession of the 27k list is fairly diplomatic and worked in the interest of the Anonymous movement, and not in the interest of either #marblecake or the enturbulation mods (who can be a bit controlling and secretive themselves from time to time, though we actively try not to).

" There are anons who are journalists, who professional design press releases for companies, who are high-up in high-profile companies, and so on. They are using their resources to our advantage, and not all of them have the luxery of sharing their resources with us openly. We still welcome their help.

" So yeah. Anonymous is open-source. Anonymous is transparent. Anonymous tries to share resources and de-emphasize the importance of any individual. Anonymous has no leaders.

" But when it comes to our active PR campaigns and directly interracting with journalists, CEOs, and so on... sometimes an all-out spam campaign isn't the best strategy. We have people in contact with those we need to be in contact with. I'm inclined to take their advice in how we can help them. Right now, they're telling us to be patient, and to keep the pressure on at youtube and google fax numbers, e-mail addresses and phone numbers. Make our existence known, make our persistence known. And let those people behind the scenes do their thing. "

" Seven months later massive drama was unleashed when Enturbulation went down in late September. Details of the event can be found Here. 2010-06-24, Kawphy (aka Consensus):
" As for moderating... I have a great deal of respect for moderators. I don't see them as 'authority figures', I see them as Janitors. Actually, I made that argument on enturbulation.org back in '08, and since then 4chan has started referring to their mods AS 'janitors.'

" I was a mod & admin at Enturb from its inception until one admin stole the server, drove off, and suddenly Gregg resurrected the database as whyweprotest.net. When 4chan declared war on Scientology, a number of somethingawful goons (including myself) set up enturb as a treefort for chanologists to work out of. Before long, I was invited into Marblecake (http://www.buzzfeed.com/reddit/also-the-work-of-4chan-pic), the chanology 'foco' (http://globalguerrillas.typepad.com/globalguerrillas/2008/03/starting-an-ope.html).

" Early in Chanology, I started a small project. I had a friend in politics, a communications director, who had a list of e-mails for local journalists, editors, and politicians. Basically, there are a couple companies that compile and maintain a global list of contacts, then lease out chunks of the list to rich people who want to send out press releases - politicians, corporations, etc. The list is seeded with a few fake e-mail addresses, so anyone that uses it 'without authorization' can be found out by the company and sued into the ground.

" I got a hold of my friend's chunk of the list, and invited other users to share any chunks they have access to. I reverse-engineered the master-list. I had people tweaking the list, cutting addresses that don't fit and adding addresses that we want to get our press releases to. Professors. Journalists. Media figures.

" Gregg set up an e-mail server that could send press releases to this list (which contained tens of thousands of addresses). We hacked our way into mainstream media. They didn't listen at first, but when you pull off a global protest with over 10k participants, people start to pay attention. When you get significant results, people pay attention. When you're weird and unique, people pay attention.

" When the economic crisis hit, I convinced Gregg to created 'economicturningpoint.org', a forum designed to help the Cognitive Surplus (read some Clay Shirky, trust me) have greater influence in analyzing and repairing the damage caused by the credit crisis. It was way ahead of it's time, and the site failed. When the Green Revolution began in Iran, Gregg and I created iran.whyweprotest.net, which played a significant role in what still turned out to be a failed revolution.

" When that man self-immolated in Tunisia at the end of last year, Anonymous offered support. They hacked government websites and displayed a message of solidarity. A few weeks later, the government had fallen. By then, #opegypt was already rolling out. These operations have preceded every revolution that has occurred this year (except ivory coast, I think, but it's kind've a special case).

" Now, Marblecake was long defunct by last December, but I still keep in occasional contact with some of the ol' boys. I found out - before the infamous 'day of rage' - that a few of my old Marblecake Friends had put together some fliers for Egypt based on our work in Chanology. They wrote them in pastebin, got a graphics designer to make 'em look pretty (Anonymous has always had incredible graphics design work), then they went to Wael Ghonim's facebook page and found native Egyptians to translate them into Arabic and begin distributing them. Here's an article about the fliers -
http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2011/01/egyptian-activists-action-plan-translated/70388/

" The fliers include instructions on how to amass in a major square without getting turned away by strategically positioned riot cops. The strategy is to form a dozen or more smaller 'flash-raids', then have them converge simultaneously.

" The people of Cairo did exactly that. And they toppled their dictator. A dictator that was put in place and persistently backed up by the United States Government.

" When HBGary decided to 'out' the 'leaders of Anonymous', some Anons decided to hack their server. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/02/anonymous-speaks-the-inside-story-of-the-hbgary-hack.ars
They got their entire e-mail database and dumped everything.

" In addition to sharing the .pdf file that contained the information on the 'leaders' of Anonymous (and I was included in that file - I'm 'Consensus'), the e-mails revealed that Bank of America, who were worried about Wikileaks' next big leak, went to the US Justice Department looking for help. They sent 'em to Hunter and Williams, one of the BIG law firms. Hunger and Williams referred them to HBGary. HBGary was working on a plan to illegally target and destroy wikileaks. This is a watergate-style coverup, with total disregard for the law (and constitution) in order to preserve the wealth of the wealthy and the status quo that has all but fallen apart.

" Around the time of the HBGary hack, someone in Marblecake put me in touch with Barrett Brown. We've been chatting since. I've read some reports tying him to lulzsec. I have no evidence, Brown has never confirmed or denied it, I could see it either way. More likely, he is able to communicate with them but has no 'authority' with them or knowledge of them. At least, that's how I'd describe my involvement in Marblecake - I've never hacked anything, I don't break the law online, I just like to discuss philosophy and politics with interested parties.

" Barrett is much the same way. He's a little more aggressive than me at calling for revolution, but there it is.

" I believe the HBGary hack was the same people that are LulzSec. When Anonymous declared war on Sony, they barely had an effect. A month later, PSN was down. Anonymous issued a press release saying 'for once it wasn't us.' Then LulzSec claimed responsibility a week or two after that. It was the first most of you heard of 'em. I'm guessing there's at least one marblecaker in Lulzsec - but I may well be wrong. At this point, I imagine Lulzsec has become yet another open-source brand (just like Anonymous). It wouldn't surprise me if a few people have even gotten nicked, and it wouldn't surprise me if the hackers have contingency plans for exactly that eventuality (passing, say, access to the twitter feed to the next person in life, etc).

" It's an incredibly complicated story that is entwined with many of the major events of the last 3 years. I've half a mind to write a book, but nobody would read it. "

A Different Kind of Boston Party (Shadowflare @ The Whisper)
" What I can detail are his stories about the initial days of Chanology. What most people don’t know, especially those currently in the movement, is that the massive outpouring of support on 4chan and other Anonymous strongholds, was entirely faked. As 4chan founder m00t detailed on his blog in 2008, Gregg and two 4chan mods faked the positive support by ‘smurfing’ accounts through various proxies, along with deleting all dissenting opinions until several days into the discussion, creating a false perception of nigh unanimous support from the internet collective. Not even those within the original thread (now lost in the forgotten places of the internet), realized the farce playing out before them. Most on the ground floor of the movement generally accepted the notion of taking on Scientology as a joke. What they may not realize however is how elaborate the joke was, and that much of the joke was actually on Anonymous, not simply on the media and Scientology.

" After consensus within Anonymous was essentially manufactured, the first ‘accident’ happened, in that vast portions of the collective bought into the deception, and began to attack and crash Scientology’s website. Within hours of Mark ‘Wise Beard Man’ Bunker‘s address to Anonymous, where the idea to legitimately protest the cult was laid out, Gregg and his team, which had grown into the secret group later dubbed ‘Marblecake’, designed the first 5 protests, all of the themes, websites (the now-defunct Enturbulation.org), and other planning all completed within a matter of weeks, all before the first fateful February 10, 2008 worldwide picket. Gregg describes this, unsurprisingly, as a lot of hard work, as his tiny yet powerful group scrambled to put on the best show possible for the audience they had amassed.

" In short, the vast explosion of creativity seemingly generated by the collective was actually a carefully orchestrated plan by a small handful of deviously creative trolls who saw this as their opportunity to make their mark on the internet and society. When Marblecake was exposed and accused of manufacturing consent and crushing dissent towards their agenda, there was a massive backlash just before the April 12, 2008 Operation: Reconnect protest, and Chanology saw a sharp decrease in numbers. Anonymous, as a rule, hates the idea of being led, and those who jumped onboard the movement felt like Chanology had betrayed two of its basic principles: Anonymous has no leaders, and censorship is the ultimate evil.

" Upon asking Gregg about this, he defended Marblecake, claiming that the incidents on Enturbulation sparking the uprising were isolated, and not systemic by any stretch of the imagination. While some may have viewed their perceived lack of openness as disturbing, the mark Gregg and his group had on the movement is undeniable, and that it still rolls on, however diminished in numbers and energy, is remarkable.

" Chanology has evolved from a sudden internet phenomenon into a steady presence outside of Scientology’s buildings and alongside the myriad of old and new public detractors and victims of the church’s abuse, one that has clearly moved beyond its Anonymous roots. Gregg, in his ruminations and within the context of the types of people Chanology has attracted, asked me why they chose to start this on 4chan?

" To me, the answer is plain: it would have never worked anywhere else, and what we see before us is the result of 4chan’s culture being dragged from the basement into real life, where it cannot and was never meant to survive. "

" A recent drama-bomb dropped on enturbulation.org (ably summarised for the confused here) proves the aphorism that a "leaderless group" in fact means "a group where leadership is secret or not acknowledged". ... “The first Anonymous video message to Scientology and the first three themes for the protests were cooked up in a collective that has come to be known as marblecake, because of one of the names for irc channels they used. Opinions on this group vary widely. Some consider them a sinister, secretive cabal bent on controlling Anonymous. Others, including participants, portray them as simply a creative collective who brainstormed and came up with good ideas, which were then adopted at large on their own merits because they were good ideas. Critics of the marblecake group, on the other hand, accuse MC of astroturfing and using sock puppets to manufacture support for their ideas, “leaderfagging,” and otherwise being bad in a variety of ways.”
