" Judge Susan L. Hubbard told Camille Marino that she could return to her home in central Florida pending a trial on May 2. But as a condition of her bond, the judge told Marino to remove threatening statements and personal information about professor Donal O'Leary, and refrained from making more threatening statements in the blogosphere before a trial that will be held in May. Animal rights activist accused of writing blog posts calling for death of Wayne State researcher (David Jesse, Detroit Free Press)
12 weeks ago by kellyramsey
" Marino's first blog post about O'Leary was Oct. 22. Titled, "Donal O'Leary: Federally-Funded Sadist Tortures Shelter Dogs to Death at Wayne State," it included his home address and phone number, along with his WSU e-mail address, phone number and address.
" The same day, she sent O'Leary an e-mail at his WSU address that included a link to her blog, court records show.
" "I hope you never have another peaceful night's sleep. ... I hope you wake up in a cold sweat every time you hear a creek in your blood-money mansion," the e-mail said. "Mostly, I hope you die a slow painful death comparable to those you forced your victims to endure. Please don't interpret this as a threat. It's merely my most fond wishes for you."
" The next day, court records show, Marino sent another e-mail to O'Leary and posted another blog entry.
" In the comment section of that post, someone using the name "Freddie Kruger and The Grim Reaper" posted a detailed, graphic description of torturing O'Leary, including burying him in an isolation chamber, feeding him feces, ripping his teeth out of his mouth and hammering them into his skull, and a number of other actions.
" Marino responded to the comment about two hours later, court files show.
" "Is there any chance I can persuade you to videotape your proposed activism so that we might upload it to (Negotiation is Over) for the entire community to enjoy. ... I would be elated to actually watch it!" "

Iowa governor signs law penalizing animal rights (Kay Henderson, Reuters)
12 weeks ago by kellyramsey
" Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill that could result in penalties on animal rights activists who pose as employees or attempt to get inside agricultural production facilities in other ways to expose possible animal cruelty. "
" Iowa action could set a precedent for other agricultural states as it is the largest producer of corn, soybeans and has the largest number of hogs and the sixth largest cattle herd.
" "If somebody comes on somebody else's property through fraud or deception or lying, that is a serious violation of people's rights and people should be held accountable for that," Branstad told reporters on Monday.
" The adoption of penalties in Iowa follows a series of cases where animal rights activists gained entrance to what they call "factory farms" including chicken and egg, hog and cattle production and processing facilities.
" In one recent example, McDonald's stopped buying from egg supplier Sparboe after an undercover investigation by the animal rights group Mercy for Animals found dead hens in cages and live chicks discarded in plastic bags along with dead one. Sparboe had unwittingly hired a Mercy activist to work at its facility. "

Neb. ag targets animal activists (Leslie Reed, Omaha World-Herald)
september 2011 by kellyramsey
" Several of Nebraska's major agriculture organizations have joined forces to combat what they describe as "extreme animal rights organizations." The Nebraskans fear the groups will mount a campaign to outlaw certain livestock confinement practices in the state.
" The group - called "We Support Agriculture" or WSA - was to announce its formation Tuesday in news conferences scheduled in locations across the state, including in Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island at Husker Harvest Days. Nebraska Cattlemen, Nebraska Farm Bureau, Nebraska Pork Producers Association, Nebraska Poultry Industries and the Nebraska State Dairy Association each contributed $5,000 to start up the effort. Organizers said they also are seeking the support of other ag groups.
" Organizers say they remain concerned that the Humane Society of the U.S. is mobilizing in Nebraska. "

Experimental Biology Blogging: Getting Scientists to Speak Up in the Animal Research Debate (Scicurious @ Neurotic Physiology)
april 2011 by kellyramsey
" Bailey says we need to be active on Capitol Hill, and active on a personal level, bringing people in to our labs, to see exactly what we do and how carefully we work. Being active on Capitol Hill doesn't necessarily mean going in person to advocate. He pointed out that we can advocate by going through our societies, encouraging scientific societies to push for federal funding and to push back against animal research organizations. And he encourages us to speak out, bring people in to our labs, and show them what we do. A lot of the fear of animal research comes from those who have no idea what it is that we do on a regular basis, and no idea how our work can benefit humans and animals down the road. "

" On the other hand, as Alena demonstrated, students are far more malleable and easily manipulated. "
" 2. Students also need to understand that making the wrong choice will result in a lifetime of grief. Aspiring scientists envision curing cancer at the Mayo Clinic. We need to impart a new vision: car bombs, 24/7 security cameras, embarrassing home demonstrations, threats, injuries, and fear. And, of course, these students need to realize that any personal risk they are willing to assume will also be visited upon their parents, children, and nearest & dearest loved ones. The time to reconsider is now.
" 3. Like all young adults, college students are acutely concerned with how they are perceived by their peers. They need to maintain a certain persona if they wish to continue to enjoy the acceptance of their community. This makes them infinitely more susceptible to negative and inflammatory publicity than their veteran-mutilator counterparts. When education fails, smear campaigns can be highly effective. Abusers have forfeited all rights to privacy and peace of mind and, if an abuser-to-be should fail to make the correct choice now, NIO is here to broadcast all of their personal information. Remember, young people document every facet of their personal lives online. In about 30 minutes, we were able to compile an impressive and comprehensive profile for Alena. "

Symposium Explores Animal Rights Tactics, Responses (@ Speaking of Research)
march 2011 by kellyramsey
" On Saturday April 24, 2010, the American Physiological Society sponsored a symposium on Trends in Animal Rights Activism and Extremism. This event, attended by about 100 people, was part of the Experimental Biology 2010 meeting, which was recently held in Anaheim, California. In introducing the symposium, session chair Bill Yates noted the importance of animal welfare, and the obligation of human beings to provide for the well-being, humane care, and judicious use of animals in research. However, some individuals reject the notion that research with animal models plays a critical role in advancing our understanding of biological processes and is essential to the search for cures. Some with this belief use tactics such as violence and intimidation to prevent researchers from conducting studies using animals. The intent of the symposium was to inform researchers about the tactics of animal rights extremists and what researchers and their institutions can do to protect themselves and their work. "

Animal rights and wrongs (editorial @ Nature)
march 2011 by kellyramsey
" Talking to the public remains crucial. Sometimes, the threat of violence means that individual researchers will not wish to engage directly with the public and should even be cautioned against doing so. But there is no excuse for institutions that house animal research — including most research universities — not to have vigorous and well-defined programmes to explain what goes on within their walls. Institutions should publicize the high standards that they are required to meet before they can use animals. They should also discuss their strategies to replace animals with more sophisticated research tools, refine research practice and reduce the overall number of animals used. If they have no such strategies, institutions should develop them as a priority. "
