While she was still an undergraduate at Vanderbilt University in the early 2000s, Zakiya Smith told one of her professors that she was interested in working for the U.S. Department of Education someday. The professor, a staunch conservative, told her to forget about it; Republicans were going to abolish the department soon.

TIPSHEET: Experts on affirmative action Supreme Court case | News | Vanderbilt University
Gilman Whiting, associate professor of African American and Diaspora Studiesand Human

Gilman Whiting (Vanderbilt University)
and Organization Development at Vanderbilt, says that the “reverse discrimination” argument at the heart of the Texas case is a “specious argument.”

“One need only conduct a passing review of the 14,000-plus school districts in the United States to see that the unequal schooling and segregation of minority students is as great today as it was 40 years ago,” Whiting said. “Less than 50 percent of African American males graduating from high school is but one example of the long march we still have ahead of us to get to equality.”

The Glossy Viewbook Loses Its Luster - Students - The Chronicle of Higher Education
Of all a college's courtship materials, the viewbook has long been the centerpiece. It seeks to convey the whole ethos of a place, what makes it unique. But viewbooks tend to blend together. Their pages teem with descriptions of majors and extracurriculars, and photos of bell towers, front gates, and groups of happy, diverse students on sunny fall days.

Beyond SATs, Finding Success in Numbers - NYTimes.com
The next year Bial started the Posse Foundation. From her work with students around the city, she chose five New York City high school students who were clearly leaders — dynamic, intelligent, creative, resilient — but who might not have had the SAT scores to get into good schools. Vanderbilt University was willing to admit them all, tuition-free.  The students met regularly in their senior year of high school, through the summer, and at college. Surrounded by their posse, they all thrived.

Texplainer: Could Universities Undergo Sunset Review? — Higher Education | The Texas Tribune
That the discussion was even occurring surprised some in the higher education community. Michael McClendon, an education policy expert from Vanderbilt University, has been retained by the Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education, an organization that sprang up in opposition to the TPPF’s proposals. He said it struck him as “illogical,” at a time when universities must increasingly look to private dollars to fund their activities, that they might have to do so with the caveat that they might not exist in a few years. “What right-minded donor would give to that organization?”

U. of Texas Says Faculty at Flagship Bring In Twice as Much Money as They Cost - Teaching - The Chronicle of Higher Education
Meanwhile, the Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education, a group of educators, alumni, and business leaders who have defended the university's priorities, issued a statement by Michael K. McLendon, an associate professor of public policy and higher education at Vanderbilt University.

Mr. McLendon, who has linked with the coalition to study the mattter, said the Texas report "challenges myths that have been falsely alleged about the university's lack of a commitment to teaching. In fact, one of the most impressive findings of the report is that professors, rather than teaching assistants or adjuncts, at UT-Austin are responsible for the bulk of the teaching at this university."

News: Early Decision Bounces Back - Inside Higher Ed
The recession appears to have been very good for the practice of "early decision," in which applicants must commit to enroll if admitted. Not only are many colleges reporting increased interest from applicants in applying early, but 2009 saw a jump in the proportion of colleges reporting that they were increasing the number of students admitted this way.

These are key findings of the 2010 "State of College Admission," an annual report from the National Association for College Admission Counseling. The report is based on surveys of college admissions offices and high school guidance counselors.

Education Week: Research Suggests a 'Gap Year' Motivates Students
In the Journal of Educational Psychology last month, University of Sidney researcher Andrew J. Martin reported on two studies on the academic motivation and performance of more than 2,800 high school and college students. He found that Australian students were more likely to take a gap year if they had low academic performance and motivation in high school. Yet former “gappers” reported significantly higher motivation in college—in the form of “adaptive behavior” such as planning, task management, and persistence—than did students who did not take a gap year.

Contributing Columnist - A Health Care Plan for Colleges - Op-Ed - NYTimes.com
Governments’ general support for higher education 25 years ago was nearly 50 percent greater than state spending on Medicaid. That relationship has now flipped: Medicaid spending is about 50 percent greater than support for higher education. If higher education’s share of state budgets had remained constant instead of being crowded out by rising Medicaid costs, it would be getting some $30 billion more than it receives today, or more than $2,000 per student.

Higher Education Price Index Barely Rises, Thanks to Drop in Utility Costs and Flat Salaries - Administration - The Chronicle of Higher Education
The Higher Education Price Index, which measures eight kinds of costs incurred by colleges and universities, rose 0.9 percent nationwide in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, the smallest increase in its history.

The salaries and benefits of faculty and staff members account for 85 percent of the index, known as HEPI, while utilities, supplies, materials, and other costs make up the rest.

Although utilities are a small portion of the index, their cost fell so dramatically in 2010 that it drove the entire index down. Utility costs dropped by 9.4 percent, while the costs of supplies and materials, measured together, fell by 1.3 percent.

Career Advice: 5 Marketing Questions - Inside Higher Ed
What makes your institution special and unique in relation to its competitors?

What you don’t want to hear is, “We offer excellent academic programs.” “Excellent” is a lame and meaningless word to marketers. The knee-jerk response to this from any marketer worth his or her salt would be, “Well, what makes the institution so excellent?” I would estimate that about 10 percent (if that) of U.S. colleges and universities are able to answer this question about differentiators in less than 30 seconds.
