The mid to late 90’s saw an abomination arise. An abomination so large that no matter where you hid eventually you would be splattered in its shit. Wave upon wave of fucked up tastelessness washed up upon our shores. It clung to our Navigator windows screaming, “Under Construction!!!” in three different colours, each bolded, with at least one blinking. Our browsers cried out in pain as pages upon pages were rendered in agonizing animated gif detail, virtually vomiting out reams of star-field backed text – “AltaVista Indexed”!

Sleep Cycle alarm clock
january 2010 by jtth
The Sleep Cycle alarm clock, developed by Swedish developer LexWare Labs AB, is a bio-alarm clock that analyzes your sleep patterns and wakes you when you are in the lightest sleep phase.
Waking up in the lightest sleep phase feels like waking without an alarm clock - it is a natural way to wake up where you feel rested and relaxed.
Sleep Cycle has become a huge success with a #1 paid app position in Japan, Russia and Sweden.

Crafting Subtle & Realistic User Interfaces — Flyosity: Mac & iPhone Interface Design
january 2010 by jtth
The underlying secret to beautiful user interface design is realism: making 2D objects on your screen appear to sit in 3D space with volume, surface properties and undulations that might appear in real life. These faux 3D objects have highlights and shadows just like objects on your desk might have, and they have textures that emulate real objects from glass to sandpaper and everything in between. Designing beautiful user interfaces has more to do with the why than the how.

How does the music-identifying app Shazam work its magic? - By Farhad Manjoo - Slate Magazine
october 2009 by jtth
The company is also planning to add a lot more services to its apps—a recommendations engine, a way to let you share your musical tastes with your friends, and charts that show the songs that people are searching for. Every Monday, Shazam sends out its charts to record labels, and execs have been known to sign artists based on the data. This has led to a new way for artists to break into the mainstream: getting featured in TV ads. In 2005, for instance, Volkswagen ran an ad in Europe for the Golf GTI that featured a remixed version of "Singin' in the Rain" by Mint Royale. The song inspired a lot of searching on Shazam—and prompted the band's label to release the track, which then shot to the top of the European charts. "We probably see that at least once a month around the world," Fisher says. In other words, Shazam doesn't only help an audience find music. Sometimes it helps music find an audience.
