The Global University | University of Wisconsin-Madison | February 5-6, 2010
The Global University: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives is a two-day conference to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on February 5 and 6, 2010. Following up on earlier meetings in China and the United Kingdom, this will be the third international conference of the "Ideas and Universities" project of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN).

The "Ideas and Universities" project brings together leading higher-education scholars from China, Australia, Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States to discuss (a) the roles that universities have played—and continue to play—in the global knowledge economy, and (b) the evolving identity of university teacher-researchers and their changing roles in institutions of higher learning.

This conference is free and open to the public. But space is limited and pre-registration is required. If you have questions about the conference, please contact Professor Adam R Nelson.

Simplifying calculus by assuming linearity « Casting Out Nines
Last semester I stumbled upon an approach for teaching the concept of the derivative, and later the integral, that worked surprisingly well with my students. It stems from a realization I had that much of what students see when they first learn about derivatives has very little to do with understanding what a derivative is. The typical approach to introducing the derivative throws students directly into the trickiest possible case: a smooth nonlinear curve, and we want to calculate the slope of a tangent line to this curve at a point. To do this, we have to bring in a lot of “stuff”: average rates of change, tables of sequences of average rates of change, and in a vague and non-rigorous sort of way the notion of a limit. It’s this “stuff” that confuses students — not because it’s hard, but because maybe it’s not suited for their first contact with the idea of the derivative. Maybe we need to build their intuition first.

A Guide to Alternative Handwriting and Shorthand Systems
The letters you are now reading, while well adapted to the eye to be read, are so ill adapted to the hand to be written that schools teach longhand as an alternative to printing them. The more cursive longhand is easy to learn, but only about 10% faster than printing. Alternative handwriting systems offer 100% or better improvements in handwriting ease and speed. If you could spend the rest of your life taking notes or keeping a journal/diary while writing two or three times faster, then, gee, why not?

Your parents might have worried when you chose Philosophy or International Relations as a major. But a year-long survey of 1.2 million people with only a bachelor's degree by PayScale Inc. shows that graduates in these subjects earned 103.5% and 97.8% more, respectively, about 10 years post-commencement. Majors that didn't show as much salary growth include Nursing and Information Technology.

Simulation software for Complex Adaptive Systems
I have developed several computer simulations for an undergraduate course I teach at Indiana University called "Complex Adaptive Systems." The course deals with systems that evolve and adapt over time. Psychology, computer science, economics, biology, and neuroscience depend upon a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that govern adaptive systems. A common feature of these systems is that organized behavior emerges from the interactions of many simple parts. Ants organize to build colonies, neurons organize to produce adaptive human behavior, and businesses organize to create economies. To address the essential question of "What are the properties of complex adaptive systems?," case studies of several systems are explored: chaotic growth in animal populations, human learning, cooperation and competition within social groups, and the evolution of artificial life. The central thesis is that widely different systems share fundamental commonalities.
