Ambiguity as a Conceptual Framework for Design by Michelle Dalmau
As technologically mediated experiences become increasingly common outside of the work context, designing for play, learning and awareness, to name a few, should be guided by creative principles and not necessarily by traditional human-computer interaction (HCI) measures of efficiency and effectiveness that can result as an impediment to experiential interactive designs. An alternative framework for design, ambiguity, as defined by Gaver, Beaver and Benford in their paper, "Ambiguity as a Resource for Design," will be applied to interactive designs that support awareness, learning and play. Specifically under investigation are interactive works of art that encourage awareness such as the Projected Realities system and the Influencing Machine; encompassing designs that promote learning, individually and collectively, among children and adolescents such as Full-Contact Poetry and NIMIS; and environments that support play such as The Hunting of the Snark and Bystander.

ignore the code: Realism in UI Design
The history of the visual design of user interfaces can be described as a gradual change towards more realism. As computers have become faster, designers have added increasingly realistic details such as color, 3D effects, shadows, translucency, and even simple physics. Some of these changes have helped usability. Shadows behind windows help us see which window is active. The physicality of the iPhone’s user interface makes the device more natural to use.

[no title]
Priori Acute is the latest addition to the Priori family. It is the result of a series of experiments into three-dimensional letter form design inspired by 19th Century display and artistic printing types. However, instead of simply adding drop shadows or fake relief to create the illusion of depth, the designers at Jonathan Barnbrook's studio took their cue from such diverse sources as the angles on the Stealth bomber and the visual conceit in the work of the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher.

The resulting forms are a playful exhibit of incongruous perspectives and twisting shapes that fold into themselves tricking the eye to shift the plane. At first glance and at small sizes the effect is subtle and the original letter forms themselves remain intact, retaining the history of British early 20th century typography, which was an inspiration for the original Priori family. But when blown up, the individual Priori Acute characters become beautifully animated and work well in selective situations such as initial caps, short headlines or logo design.

Crafting Subtle & Realistic User Interfaces — Flyosity: Mac & iPhone Interface Design
The underlying secret to beautiful user interface design is realism: making 2D objects on your screen appear to sit in 3D space with volume, surface properties and undulations that might appear in real life. These faux 3D objects have highlights and shadows just like objects on your desk might have, and they have textures that emulate real objects from glass to sandpaper and everything in between. Designing beautiful user interfaces has more to do with the why than the how.

Advice on designing scientific posters
A scientific poster is a large document that can communicate your research at a scientific meeting, and is composed of a short title, an introduction to your burning question, an overview of your trendy experimental approach, your amazing results, some insightful discussion of aforementioned results, a listing of previously published articles that are important to your research, and some brief acknowledgement of the tremendous assistance and financial support conned from others—if all text is kept to a minimum, a person could fully read your poster in under 10 minutes.

Unqualified Reservations: Wolfram Alpha and hubristic user interfaces
My guess is that if there is any "next thing" in search interfaces, it will come not from smarter UIs, but from dumber ones in which the user does more work - the Graffiti effect. If a small quantity of user effort can produce a substantial improvement in user experience (which is a big if), the user will accept the bargain. Hey, it made Jeff Hawkins rich.

P´3613 Tobacco Pipe 909, black - Porsche Design Studio
The tobacco pipe is elegant and characterised by its gently rolling lines. Made from forty-year-old Bruyère wood, that refines the taste of the tobacco and turns the enjoyment of pipe smoking into a unique experience. The cooling ribs cut into the material along the lines of the famous air-cooled Porsche boxer engines create a thermal effect that cools the pipe bowl to a pleasant temperature.

Filthy Gorgeous Things | Voyeur | Erotica Curiosa
Consider this sex chair from 1890, commissioned by Edward VII of Britain. It's a strange object, designed for orgiastic indulgence, though I've yet to determine how it was best used. I can see easy access, with stirrups designed for the free display of pussy, and what look like foot grips for traction. It could be used for cunnilingus, for sex with multiples, perhaps for an up-skirt peepshow. It's both luxurious and perplexing.

The Preppy, Eclectic Dorm Room of Drew University Senior Maximilian Sinsteden - Home Design Spring 2009 -- New York Magazine
You will not find any bubbling lava lamps, fluffy flokati rugs, or Led Zeppelin black-light posters here. Maximilian Sinsteden’s dorm room, a tiny box in Hoyt-Bowne Hall on the bucolic campus of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, looks more like a space fit for Thurston Howell III. But it is in fact a perfectly authentic expression of the 21-year-old college senior who was voted “preppiest in the class” at Choate Rosemary Hall and has a sincere love for Stubbs & Wootton slipper shoes and melon-colored pants. “I can’t live in a minimalist world,” says Sinsteden, who is majoring in French and art history. “For me, it’s all about eclecticism.”

DM's Esoteric Programming Languages - Intelligent Design Sort
The probability of the original input list being in the exact order it's in is 1/(n!). There is such a small likelihood of this that it's clearly absurd to say that this happened by chance, so it must have been consciously put in that order by an intelligent Sorter. Therefore it's safe to assume that it's already optimally Sorted in some way that transcends our naïve mortal understanding of "ascending order". Any attempt to change that order to conform to our own preconceptions would actually make it less sorted.

Bill Higgins :: the Uncanny Valley of user interface design
There’s a lesson here for software designers, and one that I’ve talked about recently - we must ensure that we design our applications to remain consistent with the environment in which our software runs. In more concrete terms: a Windows application should look and feel like a Windows application, a Mac application should look and feel like a Mac application, and a web application should look and feel like a web application.

Damn Interesting » On the Origin of Circuits
It seems that evolution had not merely selected the best code for the task, it had also advocated those programs which took advantage of the electromagnetic quirks of that specific microchip environment. The five separate logic cells were clearly crucial to the chip's operation, but they were interacting with the main circuitry through some unorthodox method– most likely via the subtle magnetic fields that are created when electrons flow through circuitry, an effect known as magnetic flux. There was also evidence that the circuit was not relying solely on the transistors' absolute ON and OFF positions like a typical chip; it was capitalizing upon analogue shades of gray along with the digital black and white.

TheDieline.com: The #1 Package Design Website, World's Best Packaging: Wine Case Lamp by Ciclus
The concept is simple. The cava case consists of two layers in which the interior layer is the actual wine carrier, while the outer layer turns into the lamp. The inner layer consists of two packages: one to hold the cava bottle and one to hold the bulb and electric line. Nothing is wasted as the small compartment turns into the base of the lamp. The following photos show the wine case/lamp-making process:

C++ FQA Lite: Defective C++
This page summarizes the major defects of the C++ programming language (listing all minor quirks would take eternity). To be fair, some of the items by themselves could be design choices, not bugs. For example, a programming language doesn't have to provide garbage collection. It's the combination of the things that makes them all problematic. For example, the lack of garbage collection makes C++ exceptions and operator overloading inherently defective. Therefore, the problems are not listed in the order of "importance" (which is subjective anyway - different people are hit the hardest by different problems). Instead, most defects are followed by one of their complementary defects, so that when a defect causes a problem, the next defect in the list makes it worse.

Boris Artzybasheff
Fought with anti-communist White Russians before immigrating to US (he spoke no English and arrived with 14 cents). A chameleon, able to adapt different styles, from children's books to portraits. Renowned for his ability to turn machines into living beings (and living beings into who-knows-what). Advisor to the Psychological Warfare branch during WW II. A profuse illustrator for the majors: Life, Fortune, and Time (producing 200+ covers for the last). Illustrated 50 books, including those he wrote himself, notably "As I See." Plentiful ad work for Xerox, Shell Oil, Pan Am, Casco Power Tools, Alcoa Steamship lines, Parke Davis, Avco Manufacturing, Scotch Tape, Wickwire Spencer Steele, Vultee Aircraft, World Airways, and Parker Pens. Mechanics Illustrated profiled him with a cover story in 1954, "When Machines Come to Life."
