Unqualified Reservations: Wolfram Alpha and hubristic user interfaces
My guess is that if there is any "next thing" in search interfaces, it will come not from smarter UIs, but from dumber ones in which the user does more work - the Graffiti effect. If a small quantity of user effort can produce a substantial improvement in user experience (which is a big if), the user will accept the bargain. Hey, it made Jeff Hawkins rich.

Augmented Social Cognition: Mechanical Turk demographics
Today I presented our work on using Amazon's Mechanical Turk service as a user testing method to PARC's Computing Science Lab (CSL). Several of the researchers in the audience asked "what does the demographic of Mechanical Turk users look like, and whether it is a reasonable sample of the real demographic" that one might want for user testing of HCI systems. I thought that was a great question.

etalog: Psychology research with Mechanical Turk
With Mechanical Turk, it's possible to do in one shot a study that would otherwise require a meta-analysis of several studies across particular locations or demographics. With more consistent data and larger populations, data can be reusable.

CensorZilla
When we created mozilla.org and released (most of) the source code to Netscape Confusicator 4.x, Netscape's lawyers made us go through a big "sanitization" process on the source code. Largely this consisted of making sure we had the legal rights to all the code we were releasing, and making sure every file had proper and accurate copyright statements; but they also made us take out all the dirty words. Specifically, "any text containing vulgar or offensive words or expressions; any text that might be slanderous or libelous to individuals and/or institutions."

Diary of a Self-Help Dropout: Flirting With the 4-Hour Workweek
Allen, Morgenstern, and Ferriss are a nicely compatible family unit: David Allen is the practical dad who reminds you not to overcomplicate things; just get the job done. Julie Morgenstern is the encouraging mom who, while hugging you, says, "It'll be all right; you just need to focus on what's important here." And Tim Ferriss is the upstart kid who cries, "Think outside the box, man!"

Aermacchi Motorcycles - The Kneeslider
Aermacchi isn’t a name you see very often these days unless you spend your time at vintage race events but Aermacchi motorcycles are some of the sweetest looking little machines around. Aermacchi made and still makes aircraft over in Italy. Back around 1950, they got into the motorcycle business and started building small displacement motorcycles, somewhere in the 50cc to 350cc range. About ten years later, Harley Davidson got involved in the company and they produced what most folks in the U.S. are familiar with, the Aermacchi Harley Davidsons. These little guys are just clean and elegant little single cylinder motorcycles, the kind of bike you could really have some fun with.
