The PCI Protection Racket - Information Management Blog - InformationWeek
The POS vendor, blaming everything on PCI, says they can only certify their two most recent version (1.2 and 1.3). Voila! All my 1.1 systems are magically no longer compliant and need to be upgraded. It is safe to assume that new a new PCI update will come out again next year. Therefore, the POS vendor has just effectively changed the lifecycle of their software from 5-7 years down to 2. Combine that with a strategy which requires you to retire older POS terminals in order to use the new version, and they now get 40% of the original system cost every two years. The moral of the story is that when companies purchase their software, they should include a clause in the contract that requires the vendor maintain compliance with PCI for a certain period of time or offer free upgrades.

Why Are Women More Religious Than Men? II | Psychology Today
studies show that an individual’s risk preference is strongly related to his or her religiosity both across and within the sexes. Not only are women more risk-averse and more religious than men, but more risk-averse men are more religious than more risk-seeking men, and more risk-averse women are more religious than more risk-seeking women. Further, consistent with this explanation, the sex difference in religiosity is larger in societies where being nonreligious is considered risky (such as in fundamentalist Christian or Muslim societies) than in societies with greater religious freedom, where individuals can freely choose to be religious or not. The sex difference is also smaller in societies where there is no widespread belief that nonbelievers go to hell, such as Buddhist societies.

this early ability to see animate agents as responsible for order—and inanimate objects capable only of disorder—may help explain some people's tendency toward creationism. Those who extend this framework too far and mistakenly assume that all observable patterns are a result of intentional work by an animate agent may be especially unwilling to embrace evolution.

How We Pay Attention : NPR
It's a fallacy that we're able to multitask and do two or three or four or five things at once, just as well as we could do them if we did them one at a time.

The problem is that we don't really get the sense of how badly we're performing these multiple tasks at once, and we think we're doing them just fine.

Sugar Beet Beatdown: Engineered Varieties Banned : NPR
"The concern is the farmers' loss of their fundamental right to choose the crop of their choice," Kimbrell says.

Kimbrell argues that an organic farmer might lose that choice, for instance, if another farmer across the road grows genetically engineered versions of the same crop. When the crops flower, they will cross-pollinate, and the organic farmer may have a problem. "If you're marketing your product as organic, or non-GMO [genetically modified organism], and it's contaminated, you can lose your markets; you can lose your certification," Kimbrell says.

Survey: Americans Don't Know Much About Religion : NPR
A new survey of Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons outperformed Protestants and Roman Catholics in answering questions about major religions, while many respondents could not correctly give the most basic tenets of their own faiths.

The U.S. is one of the most religious countries in the developed world, especially compared to largely secular Western Europe, but faith leaders and educators have long lamented that Americans still know relatively little about religion.

The survey released Tuesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life aimed to test a broad range of religious knowledge, including understanding of the Bible, core teachings of different faiths and major figures in religious history.

While a majority know that public school teachers cannot lead classes in prayer, less than a quarter know that the U.S. Supreme Court has clearly stated that teachers can read from the Bible as an example of literature.

'What We Can Smoke And Who We Can Marry': Libertarianism Explained : Planet Money : NPR
The basic libertarian idea, according to Boaz [Cato Institute's David Boaz, author of Libertarianism: A Primer], is this:

Adult individuals have the right and the responsibility to make the important decisions about their own lives. And our government, today, interferes with that right in a whole variety of ways. It tells us where to send our kids to school, how we have to save for retirement. It tells us what we can smoke and who we can marry.

Boaz says both parties go against these core, libertarian values:

Well, yeah, it's mostly Democrats who want to raise our taxes and tell us how to save for retirement and how to give to charity. But it's mostly Republicans that tell us what we can smoke and who we can marry. So, there are ways that both liberals and conservatives interfere with individual freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

Definition of Curmudgeon
A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. ... neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. ... just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide their vulnerability ... They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor. ... They attack maudlin-ism because it devalues genuine sentiment. ... Nature, having failed to equip them with a serviceable denial mechanism, has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit...
mockers and debunkers... They can't compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness. Their awareness is a curse. ... in the same way that the messenger is blamed for the message... have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. ... refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor.

Comments on "Morals and Motives: Why liberals and conservatives can’t see eye to eye." | Psychology Today
people's ideology impacts whether they attribute social problems to character or situation.

Initially, it was thought that conservatives always went for character and liberals always went for situation (which is why ideo-attribution 'effect' refers to this political breakdown, but these later studies show a reversal of 'the effect' showing that all types of people use both cognitive styles depending on their salient values and desired cognitive outcomes.

How You Are Sabotaging Your Self-Control | Psychology Today
Are you actually worse off in terms of quitting than when you started?

Yes, you are. In a new study, undergrads who smoked at least a half-pack a day on average were asked to keep track of their smoking for several weeks. For all of Week 2, some of the students were asked to try to suppress any and all thoughts about smoking. Not surprisingly, they smoked significantly fewer cigarettes during Week 2 than non-suppressers. But during Week 3, when these students were no longer required to suppress thoughts of smoking, they smoked significantly more cigarettes than non-suppressors!

1. Don't suppress, replace. Decide in advance what you will think about when a thought pops into your mind.
2. Don't suppress, plan. Instead of blocking thoughts, plan an activity in which to engage when thoughts occur.

The Limits of Self-Control | Psychology Today
Want to quit smoking? Pick up a chocolate habit.

Participants who had resisted dessert were more likely to smoke during the break (53%) than those who had resisted the less appetizing radishes (34%).

The researchers cite Roy Baumeister's theory on the limits of self-control as a likely explanation. You only have so much self-control before your willpower is exhausted. When your willpower is weakened by resisiting one temptation, you're more likely to succumb to the next.

Smoking cessation interventions that include nutritional counseling or dieting plans have higher failure rates than programs that only focus on quitting smoking.

when you're trying to make a difficult change, save your strength for what matters most.

Worn out and tired are two different things | Psychology Today
Self control wears you out, it doesn't make you tired.

You can actually measure a drop in blood sugar when people are put in a situation where they have to control themselves. The brain is using extra energy for this self-control. The more energy that people used at one time for self-control, the less likely that those people were to be able to control themselves later.

an abstraction of "consequence," refers to those moral theories which hold that the consequences of actions are the true basis for any judgment about such actions (see Rule consequentialism). The Couple Rises: Historian Elizabeth Abbott Explains Why | Psychology Today
until well into the 19th century, marriages were generally accepted and appreciated as arrangements connecting families, business inter-ests, members of the same social or economic class or other common denominators.

The husband and wife were not disregarded but, as a couple, were seldom the focal point of each other's emo-tional, intellectual or social life. They had little domestic privacy and rarely spent time alone. Their deepest affections were often reserved for their siblings, relatives and best friends. Many of their activities and interests were gender-specific and, as such, excluded their spouses. Large segments of their life's experiences were conducted independently of each other.

Logical Volume Manager (Linux) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To bring a volume group online, the "vgchange" tool:

1. Searches for PVs in all available block devices.
2. Parses the metadata header in each PV found.
3. Computes the layouts of all visible volume groups.
4. Loops over each logical volume in the volume group to be brought online and:
1. Checks if the logical volume... has all its PVs visible.
2. Creates a new, empty device mapping.
3. Maps it (...) onto the data areas of the PVs the logical volume belongs to.

To move an online logical volume between PVs on the same VG, use the "pvmove" tool:

1. Creates a new, empty device mapping for the destination.
2. Applies the "mirror" target to the original and destination maps. The kernel will start the mirror in "degraded" mode and begin copying data... to bring it into sync.
3. Replaces the original mapping with the destination when the mirror comes into sync, then destroys the original.

Revenge of the Introvert | Psychology Today (page 3)
Happiness, an arousing emotion, may be distracting for introverts during tasks... extraverts reported a preference to feel "happy," "up," or "enthusiastic" and to recall happy memories [in completing] tasks.

"We found that when we prime people to value happiness more, they become more unhappy and depressed," reports Mauss.

Although introverts like pursuing... the exploration of meaning, "there are cultural pressures that could make one feel guilty for not wanting to be as happy as the culture dictates," says Tamir. As a result, introverts are hit with a double whammy—feeling less happy, then feeling guilty and inadequate for feeling that way.

"Los Angeles, like New York, is full of type A people whose success depends upon their coercive powers and being comfortable with aggression and conflict."

Hardest was feeling judged... Others would nudge her: "Just say what you think." Being reflective was not appreciated...

I spend my life acting. Sometimes I fail. Sometimes I fall flat on my face. And... you don't see those days. I... I would never record a video on one of those days where I just completely run out of energy, and have nothing left and can't uphold this masquerade. I would never record a video like that. Ever. You just, you won't see me on those days. No one sees me on those days. I don't invite friends over, I dont take phone calls, I don't do anything on those days. I just lock myself up on those days. You will never see that. Ever. And... it is that way with every single "well functioning" aspie. Yeah, we function really well normally. Those of us who are really good at pretending to be neurotypical, we can uphold this thing for months at a time. But then suddenly, there's a week where we just can't. ... There are... there are days when I won't go out of my apartment.... because I've gotten so used to be accepted as normal... so I can't face the world when I'm an aspie.

my biggest frustrations and anger have come when I couldn't communicate, or make myself understood.

I have become very good at assimilating into the world. It's something that has granted me opportunities but it's often a mixed blessing.

I find that I have enough challenges in adapting, without inviting other peoples' stereotypes and presuppositions into play.

So, when you resist certain activities, because you are not good at them, you are labeled as being "not a team player," "unfriendly," or "difficult." Or, they discount your pain altogether - telling you that "you worry too much," or "you're being ridiculous," etc., etc.
