Last month, I tweeted about one of my recent projects, the Hacker News mobile web app. It's a simple little app to read Hacker News' stories and comments in Mobile Safari. It started out as an experiment for me to try one of the new CSS extensions introduced in Mobile Safari in iOS5, -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch which uses native-style scrolling in an overflow: scroll element.

It's a debugger for web pages, like FireBug (for FireFox) and Web Inspector (for WebKit-based browsers), except it's designed to work remotely, and in particular, to allow you debug web pages on a mobile device such as a phone.

The choice is not between using media queries and creating a dedicated mobile site; the choice is between using media queries and doing nothing at all.

This is not an article on adaptive layouts or responsive web design. This article is specifically about pixel “density”, a relatively new concern to digital designers. In the mobile environment, screen resolution has been quickly advancing, resulting in larger and larger “pixels per inch” (ppi).
