The fact that you mentioned MIT specifically really made me feel like I should take the time to produce a good response!"

Letters of Note: "He is a second Dirac, only this time human."
"Whilst heading up the Manhattan Project during World War II, theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer quickly became aware of a promising young physicist by the name of Richard Feynman. Sensing that Feynman would be incredibly valuable at UC Berkeley come the end of the war, Oppenheimer wrote the following letter to then chairman of its physics department, Raymond Birge. To label the letter a glowing recommendation would be an understatement, but even so, and despite Oppenheimer's efforts, Feynman turned down the subsequent offer."

Welcome to the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos « Gowers's Weblog
"This is the first of what I hope will be a long series of posts aimed at providing back-up to first-year Cambridge mathematicians. This may seem a strange thing to do, since the Cambridge system of supervisions (classes taught on a one-to-two basis, usually discussing questions set by lecturers) already provides an excellent back-up to lectures. Do Cambridge undergraduates, who already have closer attention than in any other university I know about, really need even more help?"

So You Want To Be A Physicist
"One of the most frequent questions we get in various physics forums and IRC physics channels (besides the annoying ”can anything travel faster than c?”) is the process and background of being a physics major. Often, we have students asking what are the requirements of obtaining a physics degree, and what can one do with such accomplishments.

I am hoping that, in a series of postings on this topic, we get to go over and demystify the whole process of what one can expect as a physics major in college, all the way to going through a Ph.D program, and even beyond that in the land of postdoctoral work and employment. This is not as easy as it sounds, especially considering the wide-ranging educational systems we have throughout the world. So in most cases, the perspective I will tend to have the most understanding with is the US educational system. This is where someone from another country can come in and contribute their experiences and wisdom...."

How do I become a data scientist? - Quora
"Background: I recently finished my bachelor's degree in computer science at Berkeley. Although it may be a bit late, I am just now getting interested in learning more about statistics and "data science." Unfortunately, I don't have much of a math background (only took up to Linear Algebra) and the required probability/discrete math course for CS. Although I started working, I have the option of enrolling in an MS CS program in January. What courses should I be looking at and will a MS in Statistics be more useful? If so, is it possible to get into an MS in Statistics without a strong math background? I will probably be looking into taking machine learning and data visualization." Great comprehensive answer...

How to Read Mathematics
"A reading protocol is a set of strategies that a reader must use in order to benefit fully from reading the text. Poetry calls for a different set of strategies than fiction, and fiction a different set than non-fiction. It would be ridiculous to read fiction and ask oneself what is the author's source for the assertion that the hero is blond and tanned; it would be wrong to read non-fiction and not ask such a question. This reading protocol extends to a viewing or listening protocol in art and music. Indeed, much of the introductory course material in literature, music and art is spent teaching these protocols."

Some Things That Computer Science Majors Should Know (Eric Allen)
"Introduction. In the broad field of computer science, one of the few sources of fundamental concepts that help us to characterize and to think about problems across its subdisciplines is that of programming languages. The field of programming languages provides us with the best understood mechanisms we have for rigorously specifying and reasoning about software systems. Moreover, the concepts that have been developed for characterizing programming languages have provided us with insights and mechanisms for reasoning about the behaviors of all computations. By failing to expose computer science majors to these concepts, we are depriving them of critical knowledge of their chosen field, making them less effective in their profession, whether they become software developers or researchers (or both). In this paper, I discuss some of the most critical topics in programming languages that every computer science major should learn, and why they are important."

"The linked document is the first public release of a document discussing the value of programming languages principles for undergraduate CS majors. The intended audience is computer scientists who are not specialists in programming languages. Please leave comments on how well you believe it meets its goals and with suggestions for improvements." // Abstract: "Undergraduate students obtain important knowledge and skills by studying the pragmatics of programming in multiple languages and the principles underlying programming language design and implementation. These topics strengthen students' grasp of the power of computation, help students choose the most appropriate programming model and language for a given problem, and improve their design skills. Understanding programming languages thus helps students in ways vital to many career paths and interests." (via http://lambda-the-ultimate.org/node/3990 )

A level playing field
"Clustering of experts in actual institutions will continue, for the same reason that high-tech expertise congregates in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. But the actual progress of science will be driven by ever more immersive technology where propinquity is irrelevant. Traditional universities will survive insofar as they offer mentoring and personal contact to their students. But it's less clear that there will be a future for the 'mass university' where the students are offered little more than a passive role in lectures (generally of mediocre quality) with minimal feedback. Instead, the Internet will offer access to outstanding lectures — and in return will offer the star lecturers (and perhaps the best classroom teachers too) a potentially global reach." MARTIN REES

Clive Thompson on the New Literacy
"Lunsford is a professor of writing and rhetoric at Stanford University, where she has organized a mammoth project called the Stanford Study of Writing to scrutinize college students' prose. From 2001 to 2006, she collected 14,672 student writing samples—everything from in-class assignments, formal essays, and journal entries to emails, blog posts, and chat sessions. Her conclusions are stirring."
