About UX Movie Nights | UX Melbourne
june 2011 by jngo
The idea for Melbourne UX Movie Night came from local members of CHISIG, IxDA and UX Book Club wanting a regular, simple (low cost, easy to run), get together where people working in and around the field of user experience in Melbourne could chat and swap notes on work, projects, life, the universe, etc…
Melbourne UX Movie Night is an attempt to make that happen.
Every month we get together for an hour or two, watch a great UX movie, share some drinks, chat and have some laughs. The movies will run for 30 to 60 minutes, and the whole evening for two to three hours.

International Address Fields in Web Forms :: UXmatters
may 2011 by jngo
Web forms are often responsible for gathering critical information—email addresses for continued communications, mailing addresses for product shipments, and billing information for payment processing to name just a few. So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that one of the most common questions I get asked about Web form design is: “How do I deal with international addresses?”

Kicker Studio: Essential Interaction Design Essays and Articles
october 2010 by jngo
I’ve started a list of essays and articles that I feel are important touchstones and reference points for interaction designers. These are not books (my Top Ten Essential Interaction Design Books), book chapters, or presentations (list to come), and I’ve certainly left out some classic (and not-yet-classic) articles. The list, as the best lists often are, is idiosyncratic. But please offer your own suggestions for additions in the comments.

Omnigraffle Sitemap Generator from Sitemap.xml « Fuzzy Thoughts
august 2010 by jngo
A few months ago we were tasked with a redesign of a pretty large site and we had to get a grasp on what was out there quickly. We saw they had a sitemap.xml file, and it kicked off our innate laziness: someone on the internets must have made something to suck this XML into Omnigraffle, right? In fact, several someones had wrangled with this quite a bit, but there wasn’t a nice and easy solution out there.

CogTool
august 2010 by jngo
CogTool is a general purpose UI prototyping tool with a difference - it automatically evaluates your design with a predictive human performance model (a "cognitive crash dummy").
To use Cogtool today, simply create a storyboard of your design idea with sketches, images or on a canvas with CogTool's widgets, demonstrate tasks on that storyboard, then press a button to produce a valid cognitive model predicting how long it will take a skilled user to complete those tasks. CogTool can be used today to baseline your current interface, or compare competitors' interfaces, and predict how much better your new designs will be.

User Experience Publications | Blog | Nick Finck | UX/IA Pro, Speaker, and Community Cultivator.
august 2009 by jngo
Continuing on my series of answering common questions I have created a post list user experience publications. This is a question that keeps coming up in discussion is about User Experience resources, specifically about publications. So here is a list of industry publications which I read on a semi-regular basis, most of which I subscribe to their feed or email newsletter. I am hoping you find these useful.
The list is grouped into three main sections; Industry Publications (non-corporate ezines and/or printed magazines), Team & Company Publications (multi-author and/or business focused publications), and Personal Publications (practitioners who write). Not listed are my own company’s blog, A Blue Flavored Blog, and my own personal blog of which you are currently reading.

Managing UI Complexity | Brandon Walkin
august 2009 by jngo
Interface complexity is an issue every designer wrestles with when designing a reasonably sophisticated application. A complex interface can reduce user effectiveness, increase the learning curve of the application, and cause users to feel intimidated and overwhelmed.
I’ve spent the past year redesigning a particularly complex application with my primary focus being on reducing complexity. In this article, I’ll go over some of the issues surrounding complexity and techniques that can be used to manage it.

This book is not directly about information architecture—although you will find information architecture principles alluded to throughout. This book is also not directly about visual design—although you will find that the backdrop of good visual design is assumed throughout. This book is about interaction design: specifically, interaction design on the Web. And even more specifically, about rich interaction design on the Web.

Introducing Infomaki: Bite-sized Usability Testing | NYPL Labs
july 2009 by jngo
Our design sessions frequently result in debate about which of two words is more compelling or accurate for our users, or whether a particular button is noticeable in a particular location. When we can, we test designs on real people using paper or digital prototypes, but it is impractical to test every day; sitting down with real people is not always as simple as you’d expect, what with the schedules of busy New Yorkers.
So, we set out to create our own rapid-testing usability laboratory from scratch, and last Tuesday we launched it, in rough beta form. Nicknamed Infomaki*, it’s showing a lot of potential even in its first 48 hours.

247 web usability guidelines
july 2009 by jngo
Although designing usable systems requires far more than simply applying guidelines, guidelines can still make a significant contribution to usability by promoting consistency and good practice. We use this list of guidelines in our consultancy work. For best results, remember to interpret the guideline in context — this requires a bit more thought but ensures you will get a lot more from your review.
