Solarized - Ethan Schoonover
Solarized is a sixteen color palette (eight monotones, eight accent colors) designed for use with terminal and gui applications. It has several unique properties. I designed this colorscheme with both precise CIELAB lightness relationships and a refined set of hues based on fixed color wheel relationships. It has been tested extensively in real world use on color calibrated displays (as well as uncalibrated/intentionally miscalibrated displays) and in a variety of lighting conditions.

Literary Death Match
Literary Death Match, co-created by Todd Zuniga, marries the literary and performative aspects of Def Poetry Jam, rapier-witted quips of American Idol’s judging, and the ridiculousness and hilarity of Double Dare.

Each episode of this competitive, humor-centric reading series features a thrilling mix of four famous and emerging authors (all representing a literary publication, press or concern — online, in print or live) who perform their most electric writing in seven minutes or less before a lively audience and a panel of three all-star judges. After each pair of readings, the judges — focused on literary merit, performance and intangibles — take turns spouting hilarious, off-the-wall commentary about each story, then select their favorite to advance to the finals.

The two finalists then compete in the Literary Death Match finale, which trades in the show’s literary sensibility for an absurd and comical climax to determine who takes home the Literary Death Match crown.

You: You get three or four brilliant and short readings from some great authors that we really rate, for FREE! You just have to show up at 7.30pm, have a drink, and listen. You even get to talk in the breaks, and listen to Northern Soul and girl groups in a beautiful bar.

I'm a senior industrial design major at Carnegie Mellon, graduating in December 2011. I design products by day, user interfaces by night, and somewhere in between I'm researching my favorite subject - science. Finding ways of incorporating science into the design of objects has been a personal crusade of mine for quite some time. I believe mixing up disciplines and exploring unknown territory is where great design comes from.

The Tailored Watch
As such selecting the right watch is an important decision, it’s something that will be worn for many years (and possibly generations) to come. And finding the right watch can be daunting, there is such a large range of choices, not to mention all the marketing hype and technical details. It can be difficult to work out which watch offers just the right combination of value, quality and functionality. This process only becomes more complex if you are considering purchasing a used or vintage watch.

What I do with The Tailored Watch is make this process simpler. If you’re looking for a watch for you or someone else, I can help you find something just right. Through extensive consultation and advising I will assess your requirements and needs and help you to find and purchase your perfect watch.

iFixit.org | Repair is Noble
We have been traveling to developing countries in Asia and Africa, visiting e-waste scrapyards and small repair shops, meeting “fixers” who breathe new life into gadgets that the western world has tossed away, and photographing the journey. Part travelogue, part investigative reporting, part soapbox, iFixit.org promises only one thing: a clear-eyed, thoughtful look at global repair culture.

iFixit has been helping people fix their stuff since 2003, with free, easy-to-use, step-by-step repair guides for all sorts of hardware—from electronics to automobiles. We believe in taking control of the devices you own by opening them up and tinkering with their insides. Our vision? A world where everyone has free access to repair manuals for everything. We make it easy, with our guide-creation software, for people to share their repair knowledge with the world.

I’m a designer and web developer in San Francisco.

I’m currently head of design for Rdio, a new social music service.

I was the original designer for EveryBlock, a site that gathers local news and public information and filters it by location to provide “a news feed for your block.”

Before co-founding EveryBlock in 2007, I was an interactive designer for Apple, where I worked on the first comprehensive redesign of apple.com in more than 10 years.

Before I moved to San Francisco in 2006, I worked for the online division of The Lawrence Journal-World, a newspaper in Lawrence, Kansas. I was one of four people that helped create the original version of the Django web framework.

I like pie.

The Wirecutter: A List of the Best Gadgets
Even though I will be blogging occasionally, The Wirecutter is not another tech blog. The Wirecutter is mostly a list of amazing gadgets. Consider it a Billboard for electronics; a Casey Kasem Top 40 if Casey Kasem were a geek; a wink and a nod to those engineers who have built something wonderful. The point is to make it easier for you to buy some great gear quickly and get on with your life. The choices I’ve made here took days of research and years of experience, interviews, data from the best editorial and user sources around. Most gadgets I choose here aren’t the top of the line models that are loaded up with junk features or overpriced; most of the ones we’ve picked are of the "good enough" or "great enough" variety, because this is generally where our needs and the right prices smash into each other. These are the same gadgets I'd recommend to my friends and family, and these are the same gadgets I’d choose for myself.

Made by Hand
MADE BY HAND WAS CREATED out of the belief that the things we collect, consume, use, and share are part of who we are as individuals. For example, the food that we eat says something about each of us, as do the tools we use and the chairs we rest on. Objects that surround the space we dwell in tell stories, and not just about us. Where did they come from? Who made them? How were they made?

Each film aims to promote that which is made locally, sustainably, and with a love for craft. Based in Brooklyn, the project takes its influence from the handmade movement here and elsewhere. We hope you find the spirit of it inspiring.

[from kolber] Web Symbols typeface
There are those points in every interactive designer’s career when he becomes fed up with producing the same set of graphics all over again for every website he designs. It could be the social network icons, gallery arrows or any number of his «signature» butterflies for the footer of each of his projects. Similar for interactive developers that have to slice the same GIFs and PNGs each time art-director asks them to. Until now. We want creative people to spend time on creative things. So we came up with the typeface that includes all frequently used iconographics and symbols. Although, the idea is not hot-baked — Webdings and Windings have been around for quite a time — all of them have a lot of unnecessary and sometimes actually scary symbols. Web Symbols is a set of vector html-compliant typefaces, so it might be used in any size, color and browser (okey, mostly — but IE7 for sure).

The content here is created with a passion for documentary films, the site is in open form and it is allowing readers to add comments about documentary films they like or dislike.

In so doing, I hope to provide a valuable resource to those with an interest in documentary films and in future I hope to help independent documentary filmmakers and festival coordinators promote their films and events.
