Fire at Charles Town
"Chances also are that most or all of the deceased had a trainer who got out of bed at dark-thirty every morning to make them fit, an owner who slipped them carrots, a groom who made them look their best,a hotwalker who cooled them out. Chances are that this trainer, this owner, this groom, this hotwalker shed real tears when he learned the news, that he loved his horse (or she loved her horse) with an irrational ferocity transcending whatever the horse accomplished on the track."
