Flickr reverse-geocoded a bunch of photos to create a bunch of GIS-like shape files
This is ridiculous cool - using people's photos, they've created freely available shape files that works from the neighborhood level to the continent.

About our maps
Paul Smith, Everyblock dev, talks about one of the most-asked questions: why they decided to roll their own map platform instead of use a third party like Microsoft, Yahoo or Google

Adrian is shutting down chicagocrime as it's been replaced by Everyblock. A definite milestone, chicagocrime was one of the first sites to dare folks to dream big dreams with Google Maps.

Google is taking a wiki-style approach to location editing on maps
You can correct a misplaced address even if you're not the proprietor of said address. Changes must be approved if they're more than 200 meters away and it shows a history of updates. Smart.

Nokia buys Navteq for $8.1B
Navteq provides all of the maps for Google, Yahoo and Live. Also, $8.1B for a company with an actual product vs. the insane valuations that have been bandied about for Facebook, which has, at best, a bunch of college kids trying to sleep with each other.

Helpful distortion
Design is knowing what not to include as much as what to include. In the case of subway maps, is it more important to know how the tracks actually bend - or to know how to get from one place to another.
