Flickr reverse-geocoded a bunch of photos to create a bunch of GIS-like shape files
This is ridiculous cool - using people's photos, they've created freely available shape files that works from the neighborhood level to the continent.

Knol, Google's Wikipedia competitor, went live this morning
Seems to be taking the "authoritative" approach, which I swear Wikipedia tried (and failed at) back when it was Nupedia. But Nupedia didn't have a gazillion dollars to bank on, either.

Dunbar's number
"A theoretical maximum number of individuals with whom a set of people can maintain a social relationship, the kind of relationship that goes with knowing who each person is and how each person relates socially to every other person." It's 150, btw.

Hyperlocal is just a fad, but what the word represents is nothing new
"It’s a fad term for the kind of nuts-and-bolts community coverage many daily newspapers abandoned in the wake of Woodward and Bernstein. It’s a fad term for building sites enhanced with granular databases and user-generated content."

Matt Haughey's got some tips on how to do online communities right
"If you're building a community you have to love what you're doing and be the best member of it." Well put, probably explains why most "communities" built by large companies are so spectacularly bad (guilty).
