Google BigQuery brings Big Data analytics to all businesses

BigQuery enables businesses and developers to gain real-time business insights from massive amounts of data without any upfront hardware or software investments. Imagine a big pharmaceutical company optimizing daily marketing spend using worldwide sales and advertisement data. Or think of a small online retailer that makes product recommendations based on user clicks. Today, we are making BigQuery publicly available, an important milestone in our effort to bring Big Data analytics to all businesses via the cloud.

Welcome to Udacity! We currently offer the following courses, with many more to come. All our courses are free, and you are welcome to sign up at any time. CS101 and CS373 are now open classes, you can enroll and follow along at your own pace. The remainder of our classes are being offered for the first time, new units will be posted once every week starting April 16th for seven weeks, and we suggest you follow along if you can although it is not required. We currently offer exams for all classes every eight weeks.

Professional Services employees make up a large demographic of our workforce.  They are architects, engineers, contractors and consultants like me.  We are a highly mobile workforce, often flying to work on projects or working at our client’s offices.  This creates a need for us to be able to manage our work, projects, resources and time from anywhere.  However, most solutions for project management, until today, have been legacy technology with very little mobility built in.

In 1996 Jack Scheper originally planned to do a virtual tour of his property, Floridune, on the web. The concept was that while touring the gardens one could click on a plant to learn more about it. It became quickly apparent that a reference would be more useful, specifically a photo encyclopedia of plants - and so Floridata was born. It's still growing ten years later - it's bigger and more comprehensive than Jack could ever have anticipated.

Explorer Charts – Electronic Format
We are often asked which electronic charts include Explorer Charts for the Bahamas. Until recently the answer has been Nobeltec charts for PC’s, Garmin Chartplotters, and chartplotters using C-Map cartridges. The Bahamas content of Nobeltec and C-Map products changed this year, and now Explorer Charts have been amended and blended with data from other sources in some areas. We have recently studied some of these products and have found a number of inaccuracies in the Bahamas data from other sources that has now supplemented and/or replaced Explorer data. Our findings of the current products follows:

The DrDepth software combines data from your sounder and your GPS to create accurate maps of your local waters. You can create map data and maps for your GPS or even bring a laptop or a Pocket PC onboard to get instantly updated maps of what's beneath your boat!

The Brookhouse NMEA data logger is a compact device for recording NMEA data such as water-depth, coupled to GPS co-ordinates. The data-logger has been designed specifically for recording data used as input for the creation of bathymetric maps, but other applications are possible. When surveying, circumstances often do not allow the use of a (laptop) computer or other electronics with complicated operating procedures. Simplicity is a key requirement. The Brookhouse NMEA data logger is small, rugged and  very simple to operate. At the front it has a LCD (Liquid Christal Display) and a sealed membrane keypad. There are 2 input ports for the connection of NMEA instruments: A GPS can be connected to one port and a depth sounder to the other. NMEA data is simultaneously read via the 2 ports and records are created with water-depth and latitude/longitude of the vessel’s position. It does not matter which NMEA data is input via which port and data may also be combined on one port. After all required data has been recorded, it can be downloaded to a computer. Application software can now filter out unwanted data records and the next step is to create a regular grid from the randomly dispersed data, using interpolation techniques. From this regular grid data a contour map can be created.

Venture capital has become available in Russia. There is now a handful of firms that have done many deals in Russia, including Almaz Capital Partners, Fast Lane, Foresight Ventures, Mangrove Capital Partners, ru-Net, ABRT Venture Fund, Russia Partners, Runa Capital, and Baring Vostok.  In addition, global American and European firms, such as Accel Partners, Bessemer Ventures, and Index Ventures have done recent deals in Russia. A great article in the Wall Street Journal discusses Accel Partner’s Jeremiah Daly’s view of the opportunity in Russia.

Venture capitalists have been most active pursing a “business model arbitrage” (aka, cloning) strategy. The most prominent Russian clones include vKontakte (Facebook clone), Ozon.ru (Amazon.com clone), OdinOtvet.ru (Quora clone), VitaPortal (WebMD clone), RentHome.ru (HomeAway/AirBnb clone), AlterGeo (Foursquare/Yelp clone), Sapato.Ru (Zappos clone), Domgeo.ru (Trulia clone), Privat Trade Ltd. (Gilt Clone), Babyboom.ru (Zulily clone), and BigLion (Groupon clone). The clone strategy has no doubt been inspired at least in part by the success of Chinese clones (for example, Renren, Weibo, and Lashou) as well as the success of Yandex, “the Google of Russia,” which IPO’d in May.
