RailsBridge : Teaching Kids Project : Blog : Teaching Ruby to High School Girls
august 2009 by jbreazeale
Until this year I was just a TA for various programming classes, which basically meant all I had to do was show up. This year, though, they didn’t have anyone to teach Intro to Java. I’d been working on Ruby on Rails workshops for women, and I saw a chance to extend the work to kids.

New Marketing Labs > Article > Coloring Outside the Lines: a Workshifting Soliloquy
august 2009 by jbreazeale
I was in the London underground yesterday returning from a wonderful planning meeting at Trafalgar Square. I love the London underground because it has clean, cushy seats that face each other. In New York City, we have hard fiberglass seats, maybe that's what Frank Sanatra was talking about...Anyways, so I'm in the "tube" as they call it here. And across from me, there's this kid with his dad.

Edge: AMAZING BABIES : A Talk With Alison Gopnik
august 2009 by jbreazeale
We've known for a long time that human children are the best learning machines in the universe. But it has always been like the mystery of the humming birds. We know that they fly, but we don't know how they can possibly do it. We could say that babies learn, but we didn't know how.

Classic Children's Albums - Top Five Classic Children's Albums
april 2009 by jbreazeale
Before Dan Zanes, before Barney, before Sesame Street and Mister Rogers, kids' music in its infancy was sometimes rough-hewn, often poorly recorded, but definitely full of heart and soul. These five classic children's albums should be on everyone's "must-hear" list, especially if you have young music fans in the house.

Baby Got Books » Our Favorite Children’s Books
january 2009 by jbreazeale
About a week ago, the New York Times released their list of the Best Illustrated Children’s Books for 2008. Amazon also has an editor’s list of the year’s best picture books for children. With a pre-schooler in the house, we read quite a few picture books here at Chez Got Books. Yet — we have not read any of the books on either list. Here are some of our favorites from the past year:

Sunscreen-Lowfat-Autism by Stephanie Seneff
october 2008 by jbreazeale
Disclaimer I have been intrigued by autism for at least two decades. I have watched as theories for causes of autism come and go -- like the Pertussin in the DPT shot and mercury in fish and infant shots. In parallel, I have been dismayed by the degree to which the American public has bought into the now widespread practices of over-aggressive protection from the sun and over-diligence in avoiding fats in the diet. I have long believed that these misguided practices are the direct cause of a host of health issues now facing America's children, including childhood obesity, ADHD, multiple allergic reactions, and teenage adult-onset diabetes. It was only recently that I began to assemble enough facts about autism to begin to believe that I had a compelling story to tell. This essay is my attempt to put that story out on the Web, in the hopes that experts and statisticians will take action to prove or disprove this theory. However, I am not an expert on this topic, and my research at MIT i
