Lafayette Park Detroit | GSD | CASE
"In 1955 Ludwig Hilberseimer was commissioned to plan the 'renewal' of one of Detroit’s deteriorating downtown neighborhoods. Hilberseimer’s plan applied the theoretical principles he had developed as an urban planner, architect, and educator to a federally underwritten project that would come to be known as Lafayette Park. His plan fundamentally reconceived the urban pattern for this portion of the 'motor city' and orchestrated the contributions of a talented interdisciplinary design team assembled for the project. This team, composed of Mies van der Rohe, Alfred Caldwell, and developer Herbert Greenwald, produced a still vibrant mixed-income, mixed-race community of publicly subsidized housing in the midst of Detroit’s ongoing deterioration."

Augmented Deliberation | The Place of Social Media
I'm skeptical: "The game board is the existing space of Boston’s Chinatown. Players are tasked with things like finding a job, finding an apartment, or finding a place to socialize.... Once the players have had the opportunity to explore and complete their quest, they are then asked a simple question: 'what does the neighborhood need now?'.... Augmented deliberation is the process. The game is the form that we happen to be investigating. We believe that providing the game scaffolding is going be very useful for getting citizens to deliberate over the complex matters of physical urban transformation. Specifcally, the qualities of immersion and role play. We are spending a good deal of time trying to make the game fun and engaging; this is the incentive for participation. But we remain aware of the potential pitfalls... will it be misinterpreted by the community as frivilous?"

Spillway: In praise of Beech Street (2009)
"There's also a personal meaning to the place for me. I have very early memories of being driven through Beech Street, and it had a powerful effect on me. For me, it screamed modernity, the first pioneering signs of a new city. It was strangely comforting - the warm orange glow of the sodium light, the rhythm of the coloured panels, the streaming lights, like the Enterprise going into warp speed. It was a snapshot of a city that had passed the period of even partial coexistence with the landscape, and was now a total structure - a cityscape. It still means to me a kind of density watershed, a Change of State in the city fabric like melting or sublimation."

Victory City: The City of the Future
"Our present-day cities are already obsolete and are threatening to engulf the entire countryside, permanently destroying vast areas of our best food-producing land. Victory City™ is the wave of the future. It's an entire city all under one roof, to be built and operated by private enterprise alone. There will not be just one, but many such cities throughout the entire world. Boasting no crime, no pollution, and no over-crowding, Victory City is a veritable utopia for those who've grown weary of trying to find solutions to today's urban problems."

Art: A City for the Future - TIME (1940)
charming: "City-Planner Wright, like many another architect, thinks that the bombing of Europe's cities is likely to be a blessing in disguise. 'After all,' says he, 'what is St. Paul's? An imitation of St. Peter's in Rome. I don't think anyone will miss Wren's work much. Broadacres is going to England as soon as there is a chance for it to be shown there. This will be immensely beneficial to England.'"

now this is starting to look familiar again. must have run across it in some retrofuturist blogging or that taschen book "future perfect" years ago and dismissed it as boring. which it is. just boring because important, ugh.

City of Los Angeles :: Los Angeles River Revitalization
I was driving past some of this along the railroad tracks and such along san fernando near, of course of course, glassell park the other day. also it appears that we might someday not have a concrete river--this is basically a good thing, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who will miss the sublime aspect to an extent.

mindboggling in a fantastic way. the language is a bit odd at times and the initial set-ups induce a fair amount of headscratchery, but sit through to the end: it's like sesame street animators plus nieuwenhaus and non-crazy new urbanists in one huge ball of WHY NOT? (via danched)

City Panel Explores the Idea of Banning Bicycle Sidewalk Riding - LAist (June 2009)
meanwhile in los angeles, city planners are generally still trying to get people off the sidewalk and into the street--where we can get killed by cars. lack of safety for the slow riders, children, and casual riders means that if the argument is "bike in the street" the result is low ridership beyond the committed core. what we need are real, safe bikelanes separated from traffic in meaningful ways. the more class one paths the better, but also more lanes that look like the new ones in new york, and keeping sidewalk bicycling legal as well, especially on parts of streets like wilshire east of santa monica, with its broad sidewalks.

Bids Start at $300,000 for Chicago’s Old Post Office - NYTimes.com
it's frikkin gorgeous. depressing that none of the proposed uses are for something in a public interest--no ideas mentioned for a school, hospital, museum, non-privately managed housing, factory space for making light rail or wind turbines or who the hell knows . . . and no sense that it could be protected architecturally or even that in its possible reuse it should be kept roughly intact.

TheCityFix DC: Sustainable Mobility in the Nation\'s Capital » Blog Archive » Le Corbusier’s Revenge
mindboggling patronizing doublethink of new urbanism fully revealed. see in particular: "The reconstitution of a public sphere is critically important for everyone working towards traditional neighborhoods; sprawl is consistently (and correctly) accused of isolating and atomizing households. However, the solution is nearly always to increase private control of space. . . . Many of the more suburban New Urbanist developments are entirely privately governed. . . . At the Diggs Town housing project in Norfolk, Virginia, New Urbanist architect Raymond Gindroz took communal lawns and put porches and fences in, turning the lawn into individually controlled yards. Creating this defensible space helped create the safety necessary for community. However, the Disneyfication of our urban spaces is a real problem . . . corporations control an inordinate amount of how we experience urban space. The paradox here is that to support the public sphere, we must remove public control. . ." just wow.

David Harvey: The Right to the City | New Left Review (October 2008)
massively important. he quotes Engels: " the bourgeoisie has only one method of solving the housing question after its fashion—that is to say, of solving it in such a way that the solution continually reproduces the question anew." Harvey: "A ‘Financial Katrina’ is unfolding, which conveniently (for the developers) threatens to wipe out low-income neighbourhoods on potentially high-value land in many inner-city areas far more effectively and speedily than could be achieved through eminent domain."
