narrow streets: los angeles
I find this rather infuriating, actually. we don't need narrower streets, we need to fill the existing streets with street cars, because that's what they were built for.

Augmented Deliberation | The Place of Social Media
I'm skeptical: "The game board is the existing space of Boston’s Chinatown. Players are tasked with things like finding a job, finding an apartment, or finding a place to socialize.... Once the players have had the opportunity to explore and complete their quest, they are then asked a simple question: 'what does the neighborhood need now?'.... Augmented deliberation is the process. The game is the form that we happen to be investigating. We believe that providing the game scaffolding is going be very useful for getting citizens to deliberate over the complex matters of physical urban transformation. Specifcally, the qualities of immersion and role play. We are spending a good deal of time trying to make the game fun and engaging; this is the incentive for participation. But we remain aware of the potential pitfalls... will it be misinterpreted by the community as frivilous?"

Spillway: In praise of Beech Street (2009)
"There's also a personal meaning to the place for me. I have very early memories of being driven through Beech Street, and it had a powerful effect on me. For me, it screamed modernity, the first pioneering signs of a new city. It was strangely comforting - the warm orange glow of the sodium light, the rhythm of the coloured panels, the streaming lights, like the Enterprise going into warp speed. It was a snapshot of a city that had passed the period of even partial coexistence with the landscape, and was now a total structure - a cityscape. It still means to me a kind of density watershed, a Change of State in the city fabric like melting or sublimation."

Slide 34 of 50 (Sci-fi I like, Fictional Futures, Goldsmiths) (2006)
"To me, the most interesting bit is that the houses were all squashed together. No streets! To get to your house, you had to climb up on top of the city, walk along until you got to your chimney and climb down. You’d live in your couple of rooms, and bury your dead under the floor. Every so often, you’d knock the house down and build another on top of the rubble. And so the hive-mound rose up. But no streets is what gets me. That streets – gaps between buildings – are an invention—it’s a beautiful concept."

sevensixfive: Soft Sites: Masonville Cove (2008)
"It is heavily vegetated, but walking the site, feeling the mossy bricks, ceramic powerline insulators and huge concrete blocks underfoot, one sees that this is really just a big pile, a ground made of stuff. The plants . . . are only the most recent (now the second most recent) system to infiltrate, overlay, and, however incompletely, organize this space. . . . In this newest process, existing landscapes are reengineered into constructed domains in a kind of habitat gentrification process - the accidentally artificial is scraped away to create a new intentionally artificial overlay. . . . Shipping, development, erosion, wakes, and dredging are then caught in a feedback loop, each link in the circle generating more of the next. If the Head is growing with increased erosion and shipping, this is the local effect of a global cycle that also began here. The first purpose built container ships . . . were built in 1960 at the Shipyard portion of the Masonville Cove site."

The Fire Station « Article Magazine
"Sheffield’s former central fire station will soon be demolished to make way for redevelopment. This is a major part of the Sevenstone plan for the city centre, which will bring a greater number of shops into the empty spaces via a half billion pound mixture of Liverpool One outdoor style shopping complexes and more familiar American Mall style structures. The monetary and civic values of this project are highly debatable. As of now, however, only demolition of the fire station will take place, as the development has stalled indefinitely. Once the fire station has gone, Sheffield city centre will be left with a giant hole. . . . Under the fire station is a block designed solely for catastrophe. Constructed as the command centre in the case of nuclear war, this is a massive concrete, climate controlled war room from which the remains of the city could be overseen. . . . Regeneration follows a similar disaster narrative." (via danched; tho, most new ones here are also "malls w/o walls")

Hypercities
"Hypercities is a Macarthur-funded web project based at UCLA. Both a pedagogical and a research platform, Hypercities is used as a platform for student projects in many UCLA courses, and recently, a multimedia companion to a special edition of the journal Urban History was published on it. The project has also been the target of significant interest from community organizations; the platform is being used to archive a multimedia walking tour of Historic Filipinotown produced by the Pilipino Workers' Center and the UCLA Center for Embedded Network Sensing. The meeting will explore the stated goals and uses of Hypercities that intersect with the stated goals of digital humanities: collaborative scholarship, participatory learning, geo-temporal argumentation, and community-scholarly engagement."

Review: Estates by Lynsey Hanley | Books | The Guardian (2007)
"By 1979, nearly half the British population lived in local authority housing; then came Thatcherism and the Right to Buy, and now only 12 per cent of us do. Hanley is no rabid opponent of home ownership (she'd be a hypocrite if she was, since she recently joined the club). But she does regret some of its consequences: the dearth of state accommodation for those who need it (there's currently a waiting list of 1.5 million); the widening gap between the mortgage-paying haves and the low-rent have-nots; the loss of the Utopian impulse towards social integration. As she says, 'this is no longer a society in which you can be proud, still less be seen to be proud, that your home has been provided by the state.'"

The GOOD 100: Bulldozing Cities | GOOD
dan kildee of flint makes the city shrinkage argument again, this time to the hipsters at good magazine. note the response in the comments: "'So why is . . . [the idea that] Flint should shrink…creating such a stir?' Well, I’d say that it’s because you never took the idea to the citizens. It wasn’t the Land Bank’s fault that the ‘cat was let out of the bag,’ but it is the Land Bank’s fault for stoking the resulting hysteria. . . . You were inviting Rush Limbaugh to come to Flint to talk about the idea before you even bothered to ask the actual citizens living there. . . . because of the way this subject has been handled–a “process” that I’ve been completely dumbfounded by since the very beginning–it looks a lot like we’re now faced with a level of work that’s going to be on par with the sort of political pandering and lowest-common-denominator type thinking that’s put Flint in this position in the first place! I want better, and this city deserves better." (via danched)

mindboggling in a fantastic way. the language is a bit odd at times and the initial set-ups induce a fair amount of headscratchery, but sit through to the end: it's like sesame street animators plus nieuwenhaus and non-crazy new urbanists in one huge ball of WHY NOT? (via danched)

Against Situationism | varnelis.net
see discussion in the footnotes. apparently some of my personally current reading is coming out of a larger societal contestation with situationism in particular? (and this probably embedded in an even larger project of intense reading and re-reading of political thought & history that's going on now?) also, would seem like the arguments here get stuck in another case of being-essence versus instrumental use/symbolic deployment. seems like it is necessary to see what parts of situationism got us here and how and why, in a more complete way . . .
