Lafayette Park Detroit | GSD | CASE
june 2010 by jannon
"In 1955 Ludwig Hilberseimer was commissioned to plan the 'renewal' of one of Detroit’s deteriorating downtown neighborhoods. Hilberseimer’s plan applied the theoretical principles he had developed as an urban planner, architect, and educator to a federally underwritten project that would come to be known as Lafayette Park. His plan fundamentally reconceived the urban pattern for this portion of the 'motor city' and orchestrated the contributions of a talented interdisciplinary design team assembled for the project. This team, composed of Mies van der Rohe, Alfred Caldwell, and developer Herbert Greenwald, produced a still vibrant mixed-income, mixed-race community of publicly subsidized housing in the midst of Detroit’s ongoing deterioration."

entire relevant bits: -------- Eyal Weizman, Sunday 1 July 2007, 18.00 Eyal Weizman, a London-based architect and theorist, presents and discusses films that explore the topic of 'urbicide': the city as a site of war and destruction. Weizman is the Director of the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmith’s College, London, and also works with a variety of human rights groups in Israel and Palestine. He co-curated the exhibition A Civilian Occupation, The Politics of Israeli Architecture, and co-edited the publication of the same title, which were based on his research into the politics of settlement. Weizman is the recipient of the James Stirling Memorial Lecture Prize for 2006-2007. Excerpts from the following films will be screened: - Paris, roman d'une ville, Stan Neumann, France 1991, 52' - The Battle of Algiers, Gillo Pontecorvo, Algeria/Italy 1966, 121' - Jenin Jenin, Mohammed Bakri, Israel 2002, 54'

Augmented Deliberation | The Place of Social Media
april 2010 by jannon
I'm skeptical: "The game board is the existing space of Boston’s Chinatown. Players are tasked with things like finding a job, finding an apartment, or finding a place to socialize.... Once the players have had the opportunity to explore and complete their quest, they are then asked a simple question: 'what does the neighborhood need now?'.... Augmented deliberation is the process. The game is the form that we happen to be investigating. We believe that providing the game scaffolding is going be very useful for getting citizens to deliberate over the complex matters of physical urban transformation. Specifcally, the qualities of immersion and role play. We are spending a good deal of time trying to make the game fun and engaging; this is the incentive for participation. But we remain aware of the potential pitfalls... will it be misinterpreted by the community as frivilous?"

Global city « Flat 7
january 2010 by jannon
whole post: “With the increasing magnetism of the city for capital and culture, groups who cannot afford to participate, such as the unemployed, the poor and the homeless, are forced into increasingly marginal spaces, unable to secure refuges or permanence as the city turns itself inside out, filling every derelict or under-used site with high-rise apartment buildings. Once the crucible for the modernist dream of unassimilated togetherness, of encounters with strangers and the frisson of disorder, the city is now an increasingly purified and fortified space – a landscape of insiders and outsiders.” - Fiona Allon, Renovation Nation, p.176

Victory City: The City of the Future
november 2009 by jannon
"Our present-day cities are already obsolete and are threatening to engulf the entire countryside, permanently destroying vast areas of our best food-producing land. Victory City™ is the wave of the future. It's an entire city all under one roof, to be built and operated by private enterprise alone. There will not be just one, but many such cities throughout the entire world. Boasting no crime, no pollution, and no over-crowding, Victory City is a veritable utopia for those who've grown weary of trying to find solutions to today's urban problems."

sevensixfive: Soft Sites: Masonville Cove (2008)
november 2009 by jannon
"It is heavily vegetated, but walking the site, feeling the mossy bricks, ceramic powerline insulators and huge concrete blocks underfoot, one sees that this is really just a big pile, a ground made of stuff. The plants . . . are only the most recent (now the second most recent) system to infiltrate, overlay, and, however incompletely, organize this space. . . . In this newest process, existing landscapes are reengineered into constructed domains in a kind of habitat gentrification process - the accidentally artificial is scraped away to create a new intentionally artificial overlay. . . . Shipping, development, erosion, wakes, and dredging are then caught in a feedback loop, each link in the circle generating more of the next. If the Head is growing with increased erosion and shipping, this is the local effect of a global cycle that also began here. The first purpose built container ships . . . were built in 1960 at the Shipyard portion of the Masonville Cove site."

Hypercities
november 2009 by jannon
"Hypercities is a Macarthur-funded web project based at UCLA. Both a pedagogical and a research platform, Hypercities is used as a platform for student projects in many UCLA courses, and recently, a multimedia companion to a special edition of the journal Urban History was published on it. The project has also been the target of significant interest from community organizations; the platform is being used to archive a multimedia walking tour of Historic Filipinotown produced by the Pilipino Workers' Center and the UCLA Center for Embedded Network Sensing. The meeting will explore the stated goals and uses of Hypercities that intersect with the stated goals of digital humanities: collaborative scholarship, participatory learning, geo-temporal argumentation, and community-scholarly engagement."

Blackdown: The man who cycles through glass walls part 2 (2008)
november 2009 by jannon
"I think the view, the popular one, that dictates that estates should be pulled down, that's highly politicised. Some of these estates that are going really have failed, an entrenched rot that can't be shaken off, but sometimes I think the authorities are too quick to come to that decision to demolish, and that falls back to ideologies and agendas on their part. I think basically speaking they work – and I like the extra layer of identity that coming from a certain estate has over, say, living in a terraced house in a street in a grid of streets. But in a way the perception of that identity comes from the same sort of misty thought that says estates have failed, estates need to be pulled down, flamed in some sort of witch-hunt ritual. If you strip that layer of thought away, on the basis of it, people could (and can) live quite ordinary, happy lives within the estate—many do, and for them there's no reason why an estate isn't working for them." Blackdown: The man who cycles through glass walls (2008)
october 2009 by jannon
"When the people with money to burn arrived in areas like Whitechapel and Bethnal Green they were force-fed words like 'vibrant' and 'diverse', a showcase model of how London came to be the melting pot that it is, but it's these suburban areas that are seeing the process being repeated now: Walthamstow, Woolwich, Barking, Thornton Heath, Edmonton, and it's like nobody is noticing. And it's worth doing so, because sometimes it isn't a pretty sight – friction between old and new communities, sometimes within the new communities, issues of the sort that the BNP jumps on in Barking & Dagenham, does its scaremongering and gets council seats out of it. But there's something worth celebrating in there too – above all, the fact that the diversity of these areas hasn't had a price tag slapped on it yet by estate agents. Yet. And that's why I like to go and see these places as they are now before it happens, because I think eventually it will." (via danched; discussion of tourism in comments)

founded in the 1920s, advocates of the Moynihan Station plan, "smart growth," et cetera--well, at least they've helped advocate for regional rail networks like njtransit for a long time, as limited as that system is, if you don't live directly on it, et cetera et cetera

STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS
september 2009 by jannon
the guy building the new arts complex at princeton (if his 2008 design got approved and is moving forward? I need to check) -- the whole "move the dinky, delete the 'wa, put in a roundabout at alex & university" plan, about which I feel mostly an overwhelming sense of blah--[i.e. this is less hateful than whitman college]

Against Situationism | varnelis.net
august 2009 by jannon
see discussion in the footnotes. apparently some of my personally current reading is coming out of a larger societal contestation with situationism in particular? (and this probably embedded in an even larger project of intense reading and re-reading of political thought & history that's going on now?) also, would seem like the arguments here get stuck in another case of being-essence versus instrumental use/symbolic deployment. seems like it is necessary to see what parts of situationism got us here and how and why, in a more complete way . . .
