it wasn't until I read this post that I understood that when people complain about "comment is free" they are complaining about the comments, rather than the initial op-eds. I am a bit dense.

k-punk: Dialogue with Graham Harman (January 2010)
february 2010 by jannon
for deleuzian subject, cf weizman on IDF, but anyway: "the 'politics of the event' articulated (albeit very differently, of course) by Deleuze and Badiou is an elaborate apologetics for an actual political failure. The injunctions to keep faith with the event, the claim that Chronos doesn't matter, only the aeonic event: both are a kind of theology of consolation, akin to Paul's shifting in position when it became clear that Christ was not going to return immediately. Obligatory affirmationism conceals a surreptitious melancholy.... All anyone can say is, 'yes, that's what it's like to attain a militant subjectivity.' ...the important questions are how to engender that kind of subjectivity. What practical steps can be taken? ... that's what I appreciate in Nick Srnicek's approach, the way that he instrumentalizes actor-network theory... what are the actors in any particular network? How can these actors be affected? How can dominant networks be decomposed and new networks installed?"

k-punk: Some answers to Graham
february 2010 by jannon
"It could ... be argued that the only possible subversion of auditing procedures is to perform them ... with sincerity, given that the expected situation is cynical compliance .... eventually I snapped. For one thing, we were facing a situation in which while, our wages were going down in real terms, we were nevertheless being asked to take on an increasing workload of additional "administration". There's a kind of fallacy involved in applying neo-Taylorist practices to education, which is that they are cost-free. They are certainly cost-free to the employer, who gets to contract out their auditing processes to their worker; but they are not cost-free to the worker, who, not only find themselves doing more work for the same (or less) money. But their biggest cost to the worker is in energy.... Far from improving performance, far from these activities being merely a waste of time, the very fact of doing them makes it harder to perform your job properly."

k-punk: Beyond the Kettle and the Carnival-Protest
december 2009 by jannon
some futzing, but solid at end: "I think this story shows many things: that the triumph of neoliberalism wasn't some inevitable law of History or Capital; that it happened not because of wealth alone, but because wealth was used as a resource to fund organisational strategies; that such such stragegies were often ingenious and experimental; that the activities themselves . . . were very far from being carnivalesque or enjoyable but that performing them produced a sense of euphoria. (One is tempted to say that the G20 melancholy carnival was the exact opposite of this: an ostensibly enjoyable party in the street that ended up as a boring and demoralising kettle. . .) Compare the hundreds of thousands on the street in the anti-capitalist protests of the last decade with what those 250 volunteers achieved. . . . Pursuing winnable, determinate goals engenders a sense that winning is possible, which further reinforces the sense of conviction necessary for victory: a hyperstitional circuit."

Readers' Forum: California deserves better than Yudof's failed leadership - ContraCostaTimes.com
december 2009 by jannon
"Earlier this year, Yudof slashed the salaries of UC's lowest-paid employees. Now workers struggling against poverty risk losing everything. Yet Yudof's plan underestimates the pay of UC's top-paid staff and shields high-level bonuses of the highest earners from being reduced. Replacing Yudof's blunt furloughs with payroll reductions on the top 2 percent of UC's payroll — roughly 3,600 individuals who earn more than $200,000 annually — would free more than $220 million for critical needs."

The Carter-Huggins Hall Occupation
november 2009 by jannon
support it! "On 19 November at approximately 12:30 AM students occupied Campbell Hall at UCLA. The time has come for us to make a statement and issue our demands. In response to this injunction we say: we ask nothing. We demand nothing. We will take, we will occupy. We have to learn not to tip toe through a space which ought by right to belong to everyone. We are under no illusions. The UC Regents will vote the budget cuts and raise student fees. The profoundly undemocratic nature of their decision making process, and their indifference to the plight of those who struggle to afford an education or keep their jobs, can come as no surprise. We know the crisis is systemic—and that it reaches beyond the Regents, beyond the criminal budget cuts in Sacremento, beyond the economic crisis, to the very foundations of our society. . . . We choose to fight back, to resist, where we find ourselves, the place where we live and work, our university."

Musical Tourism, Ethical Consumption and other blog resonances pinging through my mind « UNFASHIONABLY LATE (2008)
october 2009 by jannon
"Calling Diplo a 'neocolonialist' is missing the point. . . . That he got big off a bunch of music made in the favelas is a symptom of neocolonialism, not a cause, and becoming ethical consumers isn’t going to change it (I’m actually more skeptical of the NGO angle). . . . The case could be made that they help provide a small part of an ideological screen to an influential class of Westerners which allows Western governments and corporations to continue to exploit the places where this music is made. But I wonder if castigating the middle class appropriators is rooted more in a desire to fashion ethical identities for ourselves than in correcting inequality. The increasing appropriation of the third world in music of all levels of popularity reflects our neoimperialist economic situation, in which Western (musical) economies are propped up by the exploited (creative) labor of the Global South, but I’m not sure to what extent it causes or creates it."

New Left Review - Alain Badiou: The Communist Hypothesis (2008)
october 2009 by jannon
"The single world is precisely the place where an unlimited set of differences exist. . . . Defined . . . by invariants, identity is doubly related to difference: on the one hand, identity is that which is different from the rest; on the other, it is that which does not become different, which is invariant. The affirmation of identity has two further aspects. The first form is negative. It consists of desperately maintaining that I am not the other. This is often indispensable, in the face of authoritarian demands for integration, for example. . . . The second involves the immanent development of identity within a new situation . . . Nietzsche’s famous maxim, ‘become what you are’. [One] does not abandon that which constitutes . . . individual identity . . . but he will gradually adapt all this, in a creative fashion, to the place in which he finds himself. He will thus invent what he is . . . not through any internal rupture, but by an expansion of identity."

LRB · Ross McKibbin: Will we notice when the Tories have won?
october 2009 by jannon
ross mckibbin following up on his important essay from earlier in the year ("Will we care when Labour loses?")--both here and there the answer seems to be "just barely" (and mostly out of a kind of sympathetic sadness for what labour might have been but wasn't).

the Impostume - The constitution of the addressee
september 2009 by jannon
"these films gratify . . . the viewers’ desire to be a complete subject, a subject who is capable of everything, who knows everything, who has experienced everything. On the one hand grounded, responsible, 'realistic', capable of making the right 'choices', on the other hand secretly exultant at having achieved apotheosis, that they are the culmination of history. There is no realm of experience . . . in which they are not potential adepts, the fantasy of polyvalent, omniscient, final and culminatory subject of the end of history is what is spoken to . . . A reasonable definition of Hipsterism . . . is the assumption that there is no position which the middle class subject can not occupy. . . The middle class assumes a kind of transcendent, post-historical emptiness into which all cultures can be incorporated. . . it’s also a metaphysical claim . . . to superiority . . . while others are bounded . . . limited, objects, with a finite set of facets and characteristics. . ."

infinite thØught: climate camp, blackheath, today
september 2009 by jannon
"Whatever organised resistance there is in Britain, it looks like this: unable to formulate a properly economic response to the economic crisis . . . moored on the shores of environmentalism and the odd industrial strike. Whilst these are obviously important things, there are so many gaps left open: I mean, the banks, they belong to us! The bankers can't just go back to those grotesque bonuses, can they? The fact that they can with barely a pause can only mean that when the crash happens again, and it will, it'll be even more catastrophic. Capitalism IS crisis: a Tory government (however weak) will be more of the same, but somehow even worse. Labour will spend years in the wilderness and come up with another New Labour plan (Neo-New Labour perhaps). The minute political oscillation around the centre-right will carry on forever and ever until there's one pigeon in Trafalgar Square, half a job for one unpaid intern, and one train costing £500 for a ten minute journey."

R.A. Forum > GRAEBER, David. "The Shock of Victory" (2007)
september 2009 by jannon
some anarchist historiography: "there are no clean breaks in history. The flip-side of the . . . clean break . . . is that anything short of that is not really a victory at all. If capitalism is left standing, if it begins to market your once-subversive ideas, it shows that . . . You’ve lost; you’ve been coopted. To me this is absurd. Can we say that feminism lost . . . just because . . . capitalist firms began marketing feminist . . . products? Of course not: unless you’ve managed to destroy capitalism and patriarchy in one fell blow, this is one of the clearest signs that you’ve gotten somewhere. Presumably any effective road to revolution will involve endless moments of cooptation, endless victorious campaigns, endless little insurrectionary moments or moments of flight and covert autonomy. . . . recently, we’ve been winning quite a lot. The question is how to break the cycle of exaltation and despair and . . . create a cumulative movement towards a new society."
