if this actually gets built out like it ought to be, that will be tremendously great for the city. the 30/10 plan would speed up delivery of most of this rail from mid 2030s to mid 2010s. a huge difference. like whether it happens at all or whether the city is condemned to even worse miserable poverty.

Booster Station Zuid | GROUP A
july 2010 by jannon
"Booster Station-Zuid in Amsterdam is primarily a utility building which contains a technical plant, a pumping-engine for sluicing out sewage. The location in the public realm asks for a careful design, especially because Booster is located next to a busy traffic junction, where elevated metro lines, railways, roads and motorways intersect. The building can be seen as a metaphorical reference to a streamlined engine. The clinging, aerodynamic skin forms an envelope for the buildings technical program. It also emphasises the relation between form and function the building reveals its ducts. The constant stream of passengers by car, metro, train or bicycle perceive the Booster Station as a futuristic sculpture. With its cladding of stainless steel panels it reflects the movements, shapes and colours of the environment. At night the illuminated seams in the steal skin make the building look like a mesh-model. Mass turns into mesh."

HAUTE POP | open data doesn't empower communities | internet.artizans
june 2010 by jannon
"I’m inspired by the idea that nuggets of opened data could seed guerilla public services, plugging gaps left by government, but i don’t see any of that in the data.gov.uk apps list. The reasons aren’t technical but psychosocial - the people and communities who could use this data to help tackle their own disadvantage and marginalisation don’t have the self-confident sense of entitlement that makes for successful civic hacktivism. So why the big push behind open data and the lack of interest in enabling communities? i think the crude answer is ‘bread and circuses’. And anyway, opening up data is a technocrat friendly activity whereas empowering communities is messy and difficult. So we’ll continue to be told that we can improve public services and create future economic growth by linking data rather than tackling power. …The real struggle, as ever, is on the terrain of meanings. Who will write the narrative that we inhabit? And how much does data actually help here?"

The GOOD 100: Bulldozing Cities | GOOD
october 2009 by jannon
dan kildee of flint makes the city shrinkage argument again, this time to the hipsters at good magazine. note the response in the comments: "'So why is . . . [the idea that] Flint should shrink…creating such a stir?' Well, I’d say that it’s because you never took the idea to the citizens. It wasn’t the Land Bank’s fault that the ‘cat was let out of the bag,’ but it is the Land Bank’s fault for stoking the resulting hysteria. . . . You were inviting Rush Limbaugh to come to Flint to talk about the idea before you even bothered to ask the actual citizens living there. . . . because of the way this subject has been handled–a “process” that I’ve been completely dumbfounded by since the very beginning–it looks a lot like we’re now faced with a level of work that’s going to be on par with the sort of political pandering and lowest-common-denominator type thinking that’s put Flint in this position in the first place! I want better, and this city deserves better." (via danched)

sit down man, you're a bloody tragedy: Finsbury: the final insult
october 2009 by jannon
read this one awhile ago, but forgot to save it. also, title still appropriate given news from past week or so. and as far as propaganda roughly along the rhetorical lines of "this is what we fight the wars for--to save this," it's a hell of a lot more appealing as a vision than oxford, academia, museums, "culture," et effing cet. I mean, a better life for everyone, via totes nice infrastructure accessible to everyone: um yes please.

What is Bike Friendly? : TreeHugger (2007)
august 2009 by jannon
some infrastructural basics: "So, to be bike-friendly takes more than painting a bike lane down the road and not even punishing drivers who plough through it. It takes lanes with physical barriers between it and the road, it takes shops who cater for, rather than punish, those who leave cycles outside. And it takes a government who protects cyclists, and punishes drivers who put them in jeopardy."

Villaraigosa says local governments should unite in effort to finish Westside subway [Updated] | L.A. Now | Los Angeles Times
august 2009 by jannon
now that he's dealing with the idea that he screwed up his chance to run for governor, I guess he's trying to rebuild his local legacy. at least that's something. also, yes, what the hell, subway along wilshire must get past westwood before 2036! (of course, this and other things would be easier if we could draw on the beverly hills taxbase directly and not have to put up with their intransigence or that of other such islands of smugness and wealth . . . always always about where you draw the boundaries of the polity, isn't it?)

fails to mention any connection with the amount of current rental vacancy--not everything is about virtuously not watering your lawn--my guess is that at least part of this statistic is related to what I perceive to be a concurrent drop in actual population. my perception is entirely anecdotal, but I'd be curious to see what the real stats show.
