ASTR - Grants for Researchers at Teaching-Intensive Institutions
I've looking at academic prizes for days and days now and this is one of the best that I've seen so far in terms of built-in structural mechanisms to address class disparities within a given field. impressed. (especially since in general the prize & grant model of philanthropy is fairly corrosively inclined toward the opposite effect.)

Arnold Schwarzenegger to call for deep spending cuts, plead for U.S. aid | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times
"'As bitter as the words are in my mouth, we face additional cuts,' Schwarzenegger said in his State of the State speech before lawmakers Wednesday. 'We know what that means. We know the pain it entails. I mean, what can we say at this point except the truth, that we have no choice?' . . . The governor will call for $8 billion in aid from Washington. If the funds don't come through, he will propose the wholesale elimination of CalWorks, the state's main welfare program, as well as a program that provides in-home care to the elderly and disabled." <-- god, I hate california sometimes.

Readers' Forum: California deserves better than Yudof's failed leadership - ContraCostaTimes.com
"Earlier this year, Yudof slashed the salaries of UC's lowest-paid employees. Now workers struggling against poverty risk losing everything. Yet Yudof's plan underestimates the pay of UC's top-paid staff and shields high-level bonuses of the highest earners from being reduced. Replacing Yudof's blunt furloughs with payroll reductions on the top 2 percent of UC's payroll — roughly 3,600 individuals who earn more than $200,000 annually — would free more than $220 million for critical needs."

The Carter-Huggins Hall Occupation
support it! "On 19 November at approximately 12:30 AM students occupied Campbell Hall at UCLA. The time has come for us to make a statement and issue our demands. In response to this injunction we say: we ask nothing. We demand nothing. We will take, we will occupy. We have to learn not to tip toe through a space which ought by right to belong to everyone. We are under no illusions. The UC Regents will vote the budget cuts and raise student fees. The profoundly undemocratic nature of their decision making process, and their indifference to the plight of those who struggle to afford an education or keep their jobs, can come as no surprise. We know the crisis is systemic—and that it reaches beyond the Regents, beyond the criminal budget cuts in Sacremento, beyond the economic crisis, to the very foundations of our society. . . . We choose to fight back, to resist, where we find ourselves, the place where we live and work, our university."

In the Bronx, Blight Gave Way to Renewal - New York Times (2007)
Charlotte St. 1977–2007 in the eyes of nytimes: "[F]ew streets have illustrated the city’s capacity for destruction and rejuvenation like Charlotte Street. On the desolate land that Mr. Carter walked 30 years ago are houses like the Mitchells’, now worth $500,000. Early one recent evening, you could hear the sounds of a water sprinkler, birds chirping, the low rattle of the elevated train in the distance and little else. . . . Thousands of residences were developed using public subsidies, city-donated land and tax abatements. . . .Now primarily a mix of Asian, African-American and Latino families, it is a sleepy three-blocks lined with clean sidewalks and white-painted wrought iron fences. There are worn welcome mats at the front doors and . . . chipmunk ornaments in the yards. . . .The Mitchells bought their house for $52,600 and paid off their mortgage in 11 years. 'We have the suburb in the city . . . ,' [he] said. 'And it’s been that way from day one.'

Museums' funding sources going bone dry - USATODAY.com
I know it is the bitter tears of those privileged enough to have museum/non-profit jobs, but what would it take for people to strike: to not guide people around the museum, do security, conserve works, run the libraries, in order to have cuts that affect the highest paid rather than broad layoffs? I mean, there is a strategic opportunity in so far as "cultural institutions" care about their p.r.
