"D3 allows you to bind arbitrary data to a Document Object Model (DOM), and then apply data-driven transformations to the document. As a trivial example, you can use D3 to generate a basic HTML table from an array of numbers. Or, use the same data to create an interactive SVG bar chart with smooth transitions and interaction."

Neighborland
july 2011
"Neighborland is a fun and easy way for residents to suggest new businesses and services that they want in their neighborhood. It's a great tool for residents to voice new ideas for vacant commercial real estate, existing public space, and development projects in the works. As our community grows, entrepreneurs, property owners, and developers will be able to hear the collective needs and wants of a neighborhood, and build relationships with their future customer base. Methods of Improving Running Economy | Trifuel
july 2011
"A question frequently asked is how one goes about improving run ability, in particular the three determinants of performance: economy, lactate threshold, and VO2max. In this article, I will largely focus on improving running economy to further develop run performance. Running economy (RE) is defined as the energy expenditure (expressed as oxygen consumption, VO2) at a given running speed and RE is a critical factor in distance running performance. A question that exercise physiologists and coaches have been attempting to answer is how to improve RE due to its significant role in performance."

"Starting a company in 2011 is great. Back in 1999, when we started Ximian, the only tools a small startup could afford for their internal infrastructure were mailman and perl. It was ugly.<br />
In 2011, the best tools on the planet cost $25/month, billed to your credit card. In just a few minutes you can have better infrastructure than most fortune 500 companies. It’s incredible."

Why Evan Williams of Twitter Demoted Himself - NYTimes.com
april 2011
"'The mistake I made was definitely underhiring, both in quantity and in experience, in several areas, for a long time,' Mr. Williams says now. He attributes that mistake to the daily distractions of running Twitter and not anticipating how big it would become.
...
Several people who once worked at the company said they didn’t make money on the sale because Mr. Williams had never submitted the paperwork needed to allocate stock options. Mr. Williams says that this group hadn’t worked at the company long enough for their stock options to vest.
...
Each time employees log on to their computers, for instance, they see a photo of a colleague, with clues and a list of the person’s hobbies, and must identify the person. And notes from every meeting are posted for all employees to read."

For Sale: Fitbit. Like New. | graphpaper.com
april 2011
"In short, you just can’t lead a normal life with Fitbit. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the Fitbit experience, a lesson about the future of personal informatics, it’s that we simply won’t have accurate and reliable personal systems until the devices themselves are immune to these everyday emergencies and accidents and inconveniences. Until they’re virtually invisible and forgettable, probably embedded under the skin, we will be forced to consider personal informatic hardware as intrusive medical devices rather than as the ethereal, ambient data sources I think many people envision."
