"So let me get this straight… You’ve never jerked off. Like… ever."

Kris flushes, looking down on his hands because it's way better than looking up at Adam's flabbergasted face.

"That's what I said, isn't it?" he mutters.

"You asked for my hand."

Adam blinks. They shook hands. They just shook hands. It sounds so much worse when Kris puts it like that.

"I shook your hand," Adam corrects him.

Kris nods. "You asked for my hand and shook it. As karacheewatsa."

"Karachi-what-sa?"

Kris searches Adam's face in growing panic. "You didn't mean—Oh."

But still, Kris would not be surprised if one day, he stumbled upon the definition of a Bad Relationship Decision in a textbook somewhere and beneath it, there was a picture of Adam. Eyeliner and all, and maybe swinging a pair of handcuffs around his finger. Because just – yeah.

Adam is a lawyer, and Kris is his client, and this is a story about their feelings.

"Now listen. I know you don't think of yourself as a famous person, but news flash, non-famous people don't get invited to things by Lady Gaga, so do me a favor and pretend you're a normal celebrity, just for tonight, okay?"

In which Kris is outed on Oprah, pines in Europe, and Adam is stupid.

Adam hates Thanksgiving. "There aren't even presents!" he grumbles, just like he has every year since he was five. "The best holidays have presents. We never even got to celebrate Christmas growing up, so I'm present deprived."

"Hanukkah has eight nights of presents, douche," says Neil. "You're so greedy."

Last Thanksgiving, Adam had punched Neil in the face by the end of the meal. This year, he doesn't know if he'll make it that far.

The headline in the local paper is going to be ‘Former American Idols Arrested in Drug-Fueled Snow-Shoveling, Break-Dancing Rampage!’”

“Adam,” Kris says gently, resting the blade of his shovel on the ground in front of Adam’s feet and leaning in so that the two of them are face to face. “Adam, can I please remind you that going on vacation in Iowa in December was your crazy idea in the first place?”

Tonight, they don't have to pretend to be okay with anything. Tonight, they can just relax.

He yelps high and anxious and bounds uselessly from one side of the rock pile to the other, worrying at the edges with his claws and beating his wings frantically and howling. Humans are so fragile, their offspring pitifully so. He doesn't want the little creature to die.

Kris doesn’t know why the people who run it insist on calling The Memorial School for Higher Learning a camp. He also doesn’t know who the hell it’s in memory of, but that hardly matters. It’s school. Summer school for freaks. Kris leans his head against the window of the bus and blinks at the bright June sun slipping through the trees.

A tour is only as fun as the people you're touring with. That's something Kris learns on his first official tour when he gets stuck with a bus full of Idols, half of whom resent him for winning, and the other half just think he's overrated. Matt and Anoop are cool, but they're tight and Kris sometimes feels like a third wheel with them, so he spends most of his summer hanging out with Allison instead, learning the subtle yet important differences between purple, plum, and violet hair dyes.

"God, no more frat-types," she groaned. "I need the opposite of frat."

They'd come to the right place. "Take your pick," Kris said, gesturing to the room.

"No, no," she shook her head. "We've seen what I choose when I pick the guy—total losers. For once, I want a guy to just walk up and sweep me off my feet."

Kris took a sip of his beer and sighed, "You and me, both."

Kris was lost in the stars. Till there was Adam.

Adam and Kris never tried out for American Idol. Instead, in August 2010, they meet in a very different kind of competition, trying to win a new car in an all-day dealership challenge. But can they keep their hands on the car instead of each other?
