Microsoft Readies Game-Changing 'Mango' Update
Microsoft has shipped mangos.

On Wednesday, Microsoft delivered to its manufacturing partners the next version of the Windows Phone operating system, code-named Mango, as it looks to reinvigorate its entry in the smartphone space.

Microsoft first showcased Mango in May, and the first phone to sport the updated Windows Phone 7.5 OS was unveiled Wednesday -- the Fujitsu Toshiba Windows Phone ISI12T, which will launch in September.

More are on the way.

"This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile-operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations," Terry Myerson, Microsoft's corporate vice president of engineering for Windows phone, wrote on a company blog. "Here on the Windows Phone team, we now turn to preparing for the update process."

Microsoft gives peek at Windows 8
The next version of Windows will look a lot like Windows Phone 7. But the familiar PC design is still there under the hood.

Microsoft unveiled the design for Windows 8 at the All Things Digital conference here on Wednesday. The software giant plans to provide a more extensive demonstration at a conference for application developers in September.

Windows 8, which may not be the final name for the operating system, won't be available in stores this fall, as optimists had predicted, said Steven Sinofsky, the Windows division president. Analysts expect it to be released next year.

The vast majority of PCs sold run Windows, but the tablet market currently belongs to Apple. Microsoft put a large focus on tablets during the Windows 8 presentation.

New DroidDream malware infects 24 Android apps
Attention, Android fans: DroidDream is back, and your mobile security is again at stake.

Experts at the security firm Lookout Mobile have detected a new variant of DroidDream, the dangerous Trojan that in March was found lurking in the official Android Market, infecting more than 50 apps with rogue data-stealing code.

This time it's called DroidDreamLight, but don't let the name fool you, this Trojan is just as nasty as its heavier predecessor.

Spotted this past weekend (May 28 - May 30), DroidDreamLight has already wormed its way into 24 Android apps, affecting between 30,000 and 120,000 customers.

DroidDreamLight works much the same way as the original DroidDream, harvesting users' sensitive phone data and downloading malicious code to affected phones from remote servers.

Romney phone bank raises $10.25M in a single day
Mitt Romney wants his money to show his might.
The all-but-declared Republican presidential contender, who has kept his head low for much of the year as he collected cash, raised $10.25 million in a single day

Monday after bringing together his network of wealthy donors to dial for dollars in a city with no shortage of them. It's a hefty one-day total that Romney's team hopes will show his strength in the emerging GOP field.

Romney's phone bank fundraiser at the Las Vegas Convention Center, much like one during his first attempt at the Republican nomination, was the centerpiece of a series of fundraising events that included a conference call with volunteers who were asked to solicit their friends and neighbors for donations.

"This is a big kickoff for us, for our fundraising effort. It's kind of a celebration," Romney told the more than 400 supporters tuned in to watch him host a brief town hall-style broadcast on Facebook.
