Chinese gov't joins bid to buy LA Dodgers
september 2011 by inboxnews
In an international twist in the Dodgers' ownership saga, Frank McCourt has been offered $1.2 billion to sell the team to a group indirectly financed by the government of China.
The bid is headed by Los Angeles Marathon founder Bill Burke, according to a letter sent to McCourt on Tuesday. The letter was disclosed to The Times by two people familiar with its content but not authorized to discuss it publicly.
The proposed sale price would set a record for a Major League Baseball team. However, the bid was received with skepticism within MLB, where executives wondered whether the proposal might be used by McCourt to stir negotiations with other potential buyers or to persuade a Bankruptcy Court judge to keep McCourt in charge of the team.

2 charged in brutal LA beating of baseball fan
july 2011 by inboxnews
Police exonerated one suspect in the beating of a San Francisco Giants fan and charged two other men with the crime Friday, accusing them of a savage attack the included cutting the victim's tongue and disfiguring his face.
The arrests came two months after an emotional Police Chief Charlie Beck trumpeted the arrest of the initial suspect, and four months after the beating of Bryan Stow, a paramedic who suffered a brain injury and remains hospitalized in serious condition.
Another man, Giovanni Ramirez, was arrested in May but wasn't charged in the attack in a stadium parking lot.
For months, police Chief Charlie Beck had steadfastly maintained his confidence that Ramirez was the right suspect.

Traffic light in LA despite Carmageddon
july 2011 by inboxnews
Traffic moved fast in Los Angeles on Saturday despite a freeway shutdown and a so-called "Carmageddon" with the potential to clog streets, as a race between a plane and bicyclists upstaged fears of congestion.
The unprecedented construction-related shutdown of a 10-mile stretch of the 405 Freeway could, in a worst-case scenario, delay motorists for hours this weekend on alternate routes with ripple effects on other major highways.
"We don't want to claim victory at the moment, but it appears as though people are heeding the call that we issued to stay away or stay home," said Dave Sotero, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. "But it's not over yet."
The light traffic that began on Friday evening, when work crews started to block on-ramps and connectors to the closed stretch of the 405 Freeway, continued through the next morning and into Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Dodgers owners finally settle terms of divorce
june 2011 by inboxnews
For nearly two years, a bitter divorce battle between Frank and Jamie McCourt over ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers has put the future of the ball club in doubt.
But, as CBS News Correspondent Ben Tracy reported on "The Early Show on Saturday Morning," the couple's announcement on Friday that they've settled the terms of their divorce may give the franchise some direction.
A judge will determine who owns the team which the couple bought back in 2004. The couple has been married for nearly 30 years.
Jamie McCourt said the most important thing for her is resolution.
She said, "It's the most important thing for my kids, and certainly the fans, certainly baseball."

The L.A. school board's decision to stop serving flavored milks on campuses is just the beginning.
A menu overhaul is underway that will mean fewer meals that resemble fast food and more vegetarian offerings. Spinach tortellini in butternut squash sauce and California sushi rolls, along with many ethnic foods, are to be added.
Corn dogs, chicken nuggets and other breaded items are out, said Dennis Barrett, food services director.
