Government Shutdown Looms as Democrats Defeat House Bill
Congress remains hopelessly divided over how to fund disaster aid, an impasse that could result in a government shutdown if not solved by September 30. But lawmakers face a more pressing deadline. Currently, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) is poised to run out of cash by Tuesday, if not earlier, with the account at the dangerously-low level of $175 million, according to Senate aides.

Senate Democrats on Friday defeated a House GOP-backed stopgap Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government through November 18 by a vote of 59-36. The $1.04 trillion measure contained $3.7 billion for disaster aid, $200 million of which was offset by cuts to green energy programs, including a loan account that once helped fund the now-defunct, controversial solar panel firm Solyndra.

"This is really not the time to say we're going to balance the budget on the backs of those hit by natural disasters," cried House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

Melissa Gilbert And Bruce Boxleitner Divorcing
Court records show Melissa Gilbert has filed for divorce after 16 years of marriage to fellow actor Bruce Boxleitner.

The former "Little House on the Prairie" star cited irreconcilable differences in her divorce petition, which was filed Monday in Los Angeles.

The filing states the couple separated in January, shortly after their 16th wedding anniversary.

Gilbert served two terms as president of the Screen Actor's Guild, and Boxleitner has appeared in numerous movies and television series, including "Babylon 5" and both "Tron" films.

The couple has a 15-year-old son together.

Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls on "Little House," is seeking joint custody of their son and no spousal support from Boxleitner.

Glenn Beck moving to Texas; rents $20,000-a-month house
New Yorkers better get their heckling in fast, because Glenn Beck is headed for the Lone Star State.

The TV host and commentator recently sold his New Canaan, Conn., mansion, to Maura Abeln Smith, recently named general counsel of PepsiCo, for $3.6 million. The listing agent, Lynne Leonard, confirmed Beck was headed to Texas.

"They are going to the Dallas area," Leonard told the Daily News. "They will be renting. It's secure and gated."

Dallas-based real estate blogger Candy Evans reported that Beck is moving into the 7,900-square foot estate owned by baseball player Jorge Piedra and Swarovski heiress Vanessa Piedra. Beck has leased the home, on the market for $3.9 million, for $20,000 a month. According to Evans, the home has been on the market since 2009 and was originally listed for $5.4 million.

House votes 'no' on continuing Obama's war in Libya, then votes against de-funding
The House refused to vote President Barack Obama the authority for U.S. military operations against Libya on Friday but stopped short of cutting off funds for the mission, a mixed message reminiscent of congressional unease on Vietnam and more recent wars.

In a repudiation of the commander in chief, the House voted overwhelmingly against a resolution that would have favored letting the mission continue for one year while barring U.S. ground forces, a resolution the president said he would welcome.

The vote was 295-123, with 70 Democrats abandoning Obama one day after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had made a last-minute plea in a Capitol Hill meeting.

But shortly after that vote, the House turned back a Republican-led effort to cut off money for military hostilities in the Libyan war.

13 Children Injured When Bouncy Fun House Blows Away
A child is fighting for its life after wind gusts caused three carnival rides to flip over on Long Island, leaving at least a dozen others injured.

“I couldn’t believe it,” one witness told CBS 2′s Kristin Thorne. “It was like something out of a movie.”

A witness snapped pictures as one of the inflatable bouncy houses was thrown into the air.

Richard Dowd’s two daughters were stuck inside one of them.

“As the thing was coming at me, I tried grabbing it and it just flattened me out,” he said.

Kids who were standing near the bouncy houses, waiting in line, were also sucked up into the houses as one knocked into the other, forming a type of tornado.

White House pushing churches to be green?
The "greenest" church on the planet? Scripture as it relates to the Palestinians? Fighting American "racial injustice"?

Meet the latest addition to President Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, a White House group already replete with advocates for using religion to advance "social justice."

In January, Obama named to his faith council Lynne Hybels, a leader of Willow Creek Church, an inter-denominational, multi-generational megachurch located in a Chicago suburb.

The church is led by Hybels' husband, Bill, a social justice advocate who created the Global Leadership Summit, an international Christian group.

CNN Poll: Democrats up 50-46 percent in battle for House
According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday, the Democrats have a four-point margin over the Republicans in the battle for control of Congress. The poll indicates that 50 percent registered voters say if the election for Congress was held today, they would vote for the Democrat in their district, with 46 percent saying they would cast a ballot for the Republican in their district. The Democrats' four-point margin is within the poll's sampling error.

The GOP won 63 seats in last year's midterm elections, taking back control of the House for the first time in four years. CNN's last poll conducted before the midterms indicated the Republicans had a six-point advantage over the Democrats.

GOP victories in 2010 were due to some major historical shifts. More women voted for Republican candidates than Democratic candidates in 2010 for the first time since exit polling began in the early 1970s.
