Existing home sales fall to 6-month low in May
Sales of previously owned homes fell less than expected in May and prices dropped 4.6 percent from a year ago, a trade group said on Tuesday.

The National Association of Realtors said sales dropped 3.8 percent month over month to an annual rate of 4.81 million units, the lowest since November, after a downwardly revised 5.0 million unit pace in April.

It was the second straight month of declines in home resales. Economists polled by Reuters had expected sales to drop 5.9 percent to a 4.80 million-unit pace from the previously reported 5.05 million-unit rate.

Americans' equity in their homes near a record low
Falling real estate prices are eating away at home equity. The percentage of their homes that Americans own is near its lowest point since World War II, the Federal Reserve said Thursday. The average homeowner now has 38 percent equity, down from 61 percent a decade ago.

The latest bleak snapshot of the housing market came as mortgage rates hit a new a low for the year, falling below 4.5 percent for a 30-year fixed loan. But even alluring rates have failed to deliver any lift to the depressed housing industry.

The Fed report is based on data from the first quarter of this year. Another report last week found that home prices in big cities have fallen to 2002 levels.

Fire destroys country star Trace Adkins' home
Country music star Trace Adkins has lost his home to a fire.

Fire officials tell The Tennessean newspaper that Adkins' home in the Nashville suburb of Brentwood was a total loss after the fire broke out Saturday afternoon.

Adkins was not home. His wife, Rhonda, and children got out safely. Dispatchers said every Brentwood firefighter, including those off duty, was called out to the fire.

The blaze was reported at 3:35 p.m. and firefighters remained on scene into the evening.

Adkins is scheduled to play the CMA Music Festival next Saturday, then he heads to Alaska for shows beginning June 8.

A call to Adkins' spokeswoman by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

Recovering from tornadoes that touched down in their city last month, residents of Cordova, Alabama are angry that Mayor Jack Scott has cited a local ordinance barring single wide mobile homes to be set up as temporary housing.

To show their displeasure with Scott’s trailer position--which some believe is rooted in economic discrimination--opponents have protested at public forums. As seen above, some have even brought along signs.

Puppy dog with broken legs crawls home after surviving tornado
A puppy crawled home with two broken legs after being thrown high into the air by a tornado that ripped through Alabama.

Mason, a terrier mix, was feared dead after the storm but was found two weeks later by his owners in the wreckage of their home.

"This is probably the most dramatic we've seen as far as an injury in an animal that's survived this long," said Phil Doster at Birmingham Jefferson County Animal Control shelter, who is caring for Mason following surgery. The shelter has dealt with hundreds of pets hurt by the storms.

"For an animal just to show up on someone's porch after this time was pretty remarkable, especially with the condition he's in."

Mason has become a minor celebrity, and has a Facebook page with more than 1,200 friends.

Foreclosures Astronomically High
Sales of homes in some stage of foreclosure declined in the first three months of the year, but they still accounted for 28 percent of all home sales — a share nearly six times higher than what it would be in a healthy housing market.
Foreclosure sales, which include homes purchased after they received a notice of default or were repossessed by lenders, hit the highest share of overall sales in a year during the first quarter, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

"It's an astronomically high number," said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at RealtyTrac. "In a normal market, you're looking at the percentage of homes sold in foreclosure to be below 5 percent."

The pace at which homes are entering the foreclosure process has slowed in recent months amid bank and court delays. But distressed properties remain a fixture of a housing market still searching for a sustained recovery. The properties, often in need of repair, typically sell at a discount,
