Michelle Obama: “All This Just For a Flag”
september 2011 by inboxnews
The internet was buzzing this week with video of First Lady Michelle Obama apparently showing extreme disrespect to the American flag at a ceremony in honor of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. As police and firefighters fold the flag to the sound of marching bagpipers, a skeptical looking Mrs. Obama leans to her husband and appears to say, “all this just for a flag.” She then purses her lips and shakes her head slightly as Mr. Obama nods.
Just for a flag? If that is what she said it is regrettable. Even with all her years being around those who hold high public office Mrs. Obama does not seem to understand the purpose and importance of ceremonies. They reaffirm the bonds of loyalty and fellowship that cement our national unity. Yes, at one level a flag is just a colorful piece of cloth. But it symbolizes much more. It is the emblem of our land and all its ideals. It has been present at every major event of any importance to the country, battles,

Colorado School Comes Under Fire For Hanging Saudi Flag Higher Than American Flag
september 2011 by inboxnews
An elementary school in Colorado has come under criticism after they lowered the American flag and elevated a Saudi Arabian flag.
The principal at Bauder Elementary School in Fort Collins said they did not mean to disrespect the American flag, according to a report in the Greeley Gazzette.
Principal Brian Carpenter told the newspaper that the American flag was immediately returned to its proper and prominent position at the school.
He explained that other flags are posted around the school to recognize the nationalities of students from other countries.
A photograph showing the raised Saudi flag alongside the lowered American flag was first posted on the Greeley Report, a local blog. It generated lots of local debate.
“We realize this is an extremely sensitive time with us getting close to the 10th anniversary of 9/11," Carpenter told the Gazzette.

Stitches help repair ravaged 9/11 flag, broken hearts
july 2011 by inboxnews
The sound of a nation healing is the quiet prick of a needle through nylon fabric, the whisper of red, white or blue thread tightening into a stitch.
Less than two months from the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, D.C. residents, politicians and visiting friends and families affected by the terrorist attacks relieved a little bit more of the pain Thursday by adding stitches to the National 9/11 Flag when it arrived on Capitol Hill as part of a cross-country tour.
“Our goal is to make the flag whole again,” said Jeff Parness, chairman of New York Says Thank You Foundation, the project sponsor. “This is not telling a story about what happened on 9/11, but what happened on 9/12. We’re stitching together our histories. That’s what America is all about.”
The flag continued to fly for about a month across from where the World Trade Center towers fell, and was supposed to be buried in 2008 along with several others ravaged by a tornado in Greensburg, Kan.

Thieves Steal, Damage More Than 50 U.S. Flags From Town's July 4th Decorations
june 2011 by inboxnews
Community members are upset after thieves damaged or stole more than 50 American flags in Uniontown, Fayette County.
The flags line several streets for the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations there.
Red stripes spaced with white, 50 stars on a field of blue – it’s a design monumental to Americans – at least to most Americans.
“What they’re doing is just cutting them off the poles and letting them lay on the ground,” said Mike Gaydos, of American Legion Post 57.
Over the past two weeks, officials say more than 50 flags and poles have been stolen or damaged.
Keith Hillings and the local Elks Club place the flags along Gallatin Avenue.

Apartment Complex Bans Flying of American Flag
june 2011 by inboxnews
As people in the New Amsterdam Apartments in Marlton prepare for the 4th of July, red, white and blue started popping up around the complex.
That was until a flyer prohibiting the hanging of flags or signs was delivered to mailboxes Friday.
“I was so upset. How can they ban the American flag?” wondered Lois Lawrence.
She’s lived in the complex for 13 years. Her father was in the military and her son-in-law is a deployed marine.

Federal Reserve bank flies the rainbow flag
june 2011 by inboxnews
A state delegate in Virginia has sent a letter to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, demanding that it remove a "rainbow" flag from the flagpole that also holds Old Glory.
"Dear President [Jeffrey M.] Lacker," wrote state Delegate Bob Marshall, "Flying the homosexual flag just under the American flag outside Richmond's Federal Reserve Bank building is a serious deficiency of judgment by your organization."
Marshall said the Federal Reserve policies are supposed to "contribute to the strength and vitality of the U.S. economy," but "a flagpole in front of a federal building is not a commercial or political message board."
"What does flying the homosexual flag, or any other similar display, have to do with your central banking mission under the Federal Reserve Act passed by Congress?"
