NewMusicBox » Maximize Information Flow: How to Make Successful Live Electronic Music
The computer, the most popular electronic instrument today, was not designed to take large quantities of gestural information and convert it into data, yet 27 years after the first commercial mouse became available, we are finally at a point where processors and bus speeds are fast enough to deal with multiple continuous streams of data. Furthermore, people seem to be thinking about the problem, and this is why commercial products like the Wiimote and iPhone are appearing now. We are at the beginning of the age of the high-bit-rate continuous controller, and performers are able to get more information into the computer than ever before...

"Mozilla’s mistake here is to associate low usage with user dis-interest. If people don’t use it, the feature must not be necessary…? To my mind if the feature is not being used it’s because it’s badly designed and needs a rethink. "

Placebo Buttons | Futility Closet
n most elevators installed since the early 1990s, the “close door” button has no effect. Otis Elevator engineers confirmed the fact to the Wall Street Journal in 2003.
Similarly, many office thermostats are dummies, designed to give workers the illusion of control. “You just get tired of dealing with them and you screw in a cheap thermostat,” said Illinois HVAC specialist Richard Dawson. “Guess what? They quit calling you.”
In 2004 the New York Times reported that more than 2,500 of the 3,250 “walk” buttons in New York intersections do nothing. “The city deactivated most of the pedestrian buttons long ago with the emergence of computer-controlled traffic signals, even as an unwitting public continued to push on.”

Main Page - VisTrailsWiki
VisTrails is an open-source scientific workflow and provenance management system ...that provides support for data exploration and visualization. Whereas workflows have been traditionally used to automate repetitive tasks, for applications that are exploratory in nature, such as simulations, data analysis and visualization, very little is repeated---change is the norm. As an engineer or scientist generates and evaluates hypotheses about data under study, a series of different, albeit related, workflows are created while a workflow is adjusted in an interactive process. VisTrails was designed to manage these rapidly-evolving workflows.
...VisTrails maintains provenance of data products, of the workflows that derive these products and their executions... it allows users to navigate workflow versions in an intuitive way, to undo changes but not lose any results, to visually compare different workflows and their results, and to examine the actions that led to a result....
