Orange – Data Mining Fruitful & Fun
Design your data analysis process through visual programming. Orange remembers your choices, suggests most frequently used combinations, and intelligently chooses which communication channels between widgets to use.

Orange is packed with different visualizations, from scatterplots, bar charts, trees, to dendrograms, networks and heatmaps.

Actions seamlessly propagate through data analysis schema. Selection of data subset in one widget can automatically trigger change of display in the other one. By combining various widgets you can design data analytics framework of choice.

Over 100 widgets and growing. Coverage of most of standard data analysis tasks. Also specialized add-ons are available, like Bioorange for bioinformatics.

With scripting interface in Python, programming new algorithms and developing complex data analysis procedures is pure joy, using and reusing all power found in v

GNU Parallel - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation
GNU parallel is a shell tool for executing jobs in parallel using one or more computers. A job is can be a single command or a small script that has to be run for each of the lines in the input. The typical input is a list of files, a list of hosts, a list of users, a list of URLs, or a list of tables. A job can also be a command that reads from a pipe. GNU parallel can then split the input and pipe it into commands in parallel.

"Open source tools have recently reached a level of maturity which makes them suitable for building large-scale real-world systems. At the same time, the field of machine learning has developed a large body of powerful learning algorithms for a wide range of applications. Inspired by similar efforts in bioinformatics (BOSC) or statistics (useR), our aim is to build a forum for open source software in machine learning."

"We are trying to do for machine learning what Image Magick has done for image processing. That is, we try to keep it simple by providing a big range of functionality in the form of easy-to-use command-line tools. You are free to mix tools from other packages in with ours. You are free to mix your own custom tools with ours. You are free to write scripts that automate your experiments. You are free to use our tools in ways that we could not foresee."

ThinkUp 1.0 and Software With Purpose - Anil Dash
Picture everything you've ever written on Twitter
Now add in every photo or status update you've ever posted on Facebook
Add to that every message you've ever sent on Google+
And then include every response you've ever gotten from anyone to any of those messages
Now understand: The companies behind these networks can, and someday will, destroy all of those moments. Delete them from the record. Forever. With no advance notice. I want you to understand, and really truly believe that. Read the terms of service yourself if you don't think they can do that.

Sidestep | Chetan Surpur
When you connect to an insecure network, Sidestep opens an SSH tunnel with the proxy server, and then sets the Mac OS X system-wide SOCKS proxy to use this SSH connection. And since most Mac applications (including browsers) use this system-wide proxy to connect to the Internet through, they will all end up using the encrypted SSH tunnel

PySide – Python for Qt
PySide is an open source sofware project providing Python bindings for the Qt framework. ...
PySide has been published as a response to the lack of suitably licensed Qt bindings for Python. PySide is licensed under the LGPL version 2.1 license, allowing both Free/Open source software and proprietary software development.
PySide consists of a full set of Qt bindings for multiple platforms as well as the automated binding generation tools required to produce the bindings. Due to the availability of the whole toolchain, PySide will be of interest... to developers willing to generate other Qt and C++ based bindings as well.
Although based on a different technology than the existing GPL-licensed PyQt bindings, PySide will initially aim to be API-compatible with them. In addition ... a more Pythonic API will be provided in the future.
While the PySide project has been initiated and the first set of code provided by Nokia, PySide will be run as a true open source project.

Firesheep
extremely common for websites to protect your password by encrypting the initial login, but surprisingly uncommon for websites to encrypt everything else. This leaves the cookie (and the user) vulnerable. HTTP session hijacking (sometimes called "sidejacking") is when an attacker gets a hold of a user's cookie, allowing them to do anything the user can do on a particular website...

Today at Toorcon 12 I announced the release of Firesheep, a Firefox extension designed to demonstrate just how serious this problem is.

After installing the extension you'll see a new sidebar. Connect to any busy open wifi network and click the big "Start Capturing" button. Then wait.

As soon as anyone on the network visits an insecure website known to Firesheep, their name and photo will be displayed:

Double-click on someone, and you're instantly logged in as them.

Raw Material Software • JUCE
Thi is an a/v C++ toolkit, "... particularly good for creating highly-specialised UIs and for handling graphics and sound.

SUPPORTED PLATFORMS
Supported development environments are XCode, Visual Studio, GCC (and probably any other modern C++ compiler).

Applications can be compiled to run on Windows, Mac, Linux, and (just recently!) iPhone.
Audio plugins can be built as VST (Mac/Windows), AudioUnit (Mac) and RTAS (Mac/Windows). Using cunning tricks, a single binary image can be created that functions as multiple plugin formats.
Browser plugins can be built as NPAPI (Mac/Windows), or ActiveX (Windows)."
