FrontPage - pytagsfs
july 2011 by howthebodyworks
pytagsfs is a FUSE filesystem that arranges media files in a virtual directory structure based on the file tags. For instance, a set of audio files could be mapped to a new directory structure organizing them hierarchically by album, genre, release date, etc. File tags can be changed by moving and renaming virtual files and directories. The virtual files can also be modified directly, and, of course, can be opened and played just like regular files.

july 2011 by howthebodyworks
Mutagen is a Python module to handle audio metadata. It supports ASF, FLAC, M4A, Monkey's Audio, MP3, Musepack, Ogg FLAC, Ogg Speex, Ogg Theora, Ogg Vorbis, True Audio, WavPack and OptimFROG audio files. All versions of ID3v2 are supported, and all standard ID3v2.4 frames are parsed. It can read Xing headers to accurately calculate the bitrate and length of MP3s. ID3 and APEv2 tags can be edited regardless of audio format. It can also manipulate Ogg streams on an individual packet/page level

beets: the music geek's media organizer
july 2011 by howthebodyworks
Beets is the media library management system for obsessive-compulsive music geeks.
The purpose of beets is to get your music collection right once and for all. It catalogs your collection, automatically improving its metadata as it goes using the MusicBrainz database. (It also downloads cover art for albums it imports.) ...If beets doesn't do what you want yet, writing your own plugin is shockingly simple if you know a little Python.

Facebook's blessed page metadata annotation.Might actually get up thanks to their clout, and the reasonably immediate benefits that using it provide. Buuuut - it requires you to be logged in to facebook, is "inspired by Dublin Core, link-rel canonical, Microformats, and RDFa" without the precision of those -- a webpage about a movie //is-a// movie; the vocabulary for what your page can be about is tiny and squarely aimed at, basically, teens. e.g. the laughable vocabulary for groups "cause, sports_league, sports_team." Still, of the many types of XML page cruft you could be embedding in your page this one might be commercially sensible to implement.

The techie/non-techie divide #1: content versus metacontent
december 2009 by howthebodyworks
I've banished from my vocabulary in dealing with users the question: "what did you expect to happen?" (intoned inquisitively with stress on the word happen, not sarcastically with stress on the last syllable of expect). Because what the user hears when you ask that question is, "you disagree with the computer. The computer's right, you're wrong...

cb2Bib: Overview
november 2009 by howthebodyworks
"The cb2Bib is a free, open source, and multiplatform application for rapidly extracting unformatted, or unstandardized bibliographic references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files.
The cb2Bib facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted and non standard sources. Output references are written in BibTeX. Article files can be easily linked and renamed by dragging them onto the cb2Bib window. Additionally, it permits editing and browsing BibTeX files, citing references, searching references and the full contents of the referenced documents, inserting bibliographic metadata to documents, and writing short notes that interrelate several references."

Knight News Challenge: A grant to DocumentCloud promises a data boost for investigative journalism » Nieman Journalism Lab
july 2009 by howthebodyworks
The Knight News Challenge’s biggest winner, with a two-year grant of $719,500, is DocumentCloud, the primary-source index conceived by journalists and developers at ProPublica and The New York Times. Here’s why you should care: There’s good reason to believe the project will transform how some investigative journalism is conducted — and who conducts it.
Like a lot of software in the cloud, this one is complicated to explain. I wrote a long overview of DocumentCloud in November, and you can read their initial grant application in my first post about the project. Aron Pilhofer, editor of interactive news technologies at the Times and one of the project’s creators, told me on Monday, “DocumentCloud isn’t really conducive to a two-minute elevator pitch.” But later in our conversation, he ventured one: “It will turn documents into data.”
