I guai non vengono mai da soli, lo sappiamo bene noi “comuni mortali“, sta iniziando a capirlo anche Google. Dopo il nuovo obolo da pagare a Microsoft, gli androidiani sono costretti ad incassare un nuovo colpo da Apple che dopo tanti anni (dal 2005, per l’esattezza) ha visto finalmente riconoscersi il brevetto per lo Slide to unlock, il meccanismo di sblocco degli smartphone dopo lo stand-by che prevede il trascinamento di un pulsante sullo schermo da sinistra verso destra.
Come mai il riconoscimento di un brevetto Apple per una funzione che l’azienda di Cupertino ha introdotto effettivamente per prima (con iPhone) dovrebbe preoccupare il mondo Android? Semplice, perché la maggior parte degli Android Phone e dei tablet con il sistema del robottino usano un meccanismo molto, molto simile per ritornare dallo standby. Ed anche perché il brevetto sarebbe molto fraintendibile nel caso in cui la Casa della mela decidesse di usarlo per mettere i bastoni fra le ruote a Google.

Quante volte vi è capitato di lasciare lo smartphone lontano dalla vostra postazione di lavoro e di dovervi alzare inutilmente; perdendo il filo di quello che stavate facendo; per rispondere a telefonate e messaggini tutt’altro che urgenti? Remote Notifier for Android è la soluzione per dire addio a questo tipo di noie. Si tratta, infatti, di un’applicazione gratuita per Android (dotata di un client desktop multi-piattaforma) che permette di ricevere le notifiche di Android sul PC.
In questo modo, ad ogni chiamata o messaggio che si riceve, viene visualizzato in tempo reale il nome di chi ci cerca direttamente sul desktop del computer. La notizia del rinvio dell’evento Samsung Unpacked 2011: Google Episode programmato per il CTIA Wireless di San Diego ha scosso molti utenti e fan Android che avrebbero voluto conoscere l’11 Ottobre il nuovo Nexus Prime e la nuova versione Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Come tutti sappiamo, Android è in forte crescita. Larry Page, a Luglio, aveva parlato di  circa 550.000 attivazioni al giorno, ma per gli analisti il dato è sicuramente errato e destinato a crescere, se si pensa che solo il nuovissimo e tanto atteso tablet android di Amazon, Kindle Fire, riceve circa  100.000 prenotazioni di unità/giorno.

Forse molti di voi non ricordano il servizio Drive realizzato da Google qualche anno fa. GDrive era un servizio di storage online di 1 GB collegato a Gmail grazie al quale potevamo salvare online i nostri dati, una specie di Dropbox by Google. Nel lontano 2007 questo servizio non era riuscito ad avere il successo che ci si aspetta, ma forte ormai dell’esperienza e dei successi di Dropbox (e fratelli) e del recente accordo con HTC, come vi avevamo comunicato in quest’articolo, sembra che BigG sia nuovamente interessato ad aprire il suo GDrive.

Motorola sembra essersi attivata per produrre nuovi dispositivi Android, dopo avervi mostrato, in quest’articolo, le probabili foto del prossimo tablet Xoom 2, adesso vi presenteremo e mostreremo il prossimo super smartphone della casa alata. I came across this article today over on the NetworkWorld about malware and the Android platform.  It’s an interesting read about the continuing saga of McAfee’s threat report, which shows an increase  in Android malware of 75ish percent.  A pretty interesting number — even if you’ve been tracking the reasons for it happening.

So anyway, the article is geared toward users – it’s approachable, probably to help spin the user community down from the news about the malware infestation by giving them some specific actions that they can take if they’re worried about malware on their droid.

But what struck me was this:

Always check app permissions: Whenever you download or update an app, you are given a list of permissions for that app. If an app is asking for things it shouldn’t need, get rid if it.

Which got me thinking about Android permissions — and their relative value (or lack thereof).  Now, I’m an Android user…  and I personally happen to find the permissions useless.  Seriously.  Like, it’s my job to care about security and I could care less about Android permissions on apps.  Why is that?  I’m glad you asked.

It’s because pretty much every app asks for something questionable.

No, seriously.  It’s the rare case where the permissions for the app make sense to me.  Whether it be the bar code scanner that asks for the “MODIFY GLOBAL SYSTEM SETTINGS” permission, the compass that requires “FULL INTERNET ACCESS”, or the “funny jokes for kids” app that wants to turn on the GPS and track location – it’s all creepy.  Like, windowless van kind of creepy.

In fact, it’s the rare case when the apps you install are not asking for the world.  Like, if it were possible for Angry Birds to request the “view my 2010 tax return” and “broadcast my medical records on the Internet” permissions, I’d fully expect them to ask for it and nobody to think that’s strange in slightest.

Kidding aside, it’s already at the point that I for one  personally find it impossible to actually use the permission system as a decision point for whether to install an app or not.  They’re just full-on useless – and until we start giving a fluff about what permissions they ask for (and refusing to run them otherwise), it’s not going to change.

Grazie ad un utente australiano, il quale qualche mese fa ha raccolto oltre 10000 firme, potrebbe arrivare presto lo sblocco dei bootloader per gli smartphone Motorola che montano Android. Dopo Sony Ericsson e HTC adesso sarebbe il turno di Motorola rendere il bootloader dei propri dispositivi unlocked / locked, come è successo recentemente per il tablet Xoom. La conferma della notizia è arrivata anche tramite Twitter e le parole di Christy Wyatt.

E' stato avvistato al recente E3 il nuovo prototipo di cuffie con sistema operativo Android creato da Nox Audio col nome di Admiral Touch. Il primo smartphone da polso touchscreen con Android si chiama i'mColor, ha un display a colori da 1.55 pollici (con una risoluzione di 240x240 pixel) protetto da un vetro zaffiro e possiede una matrice TFT a colori. [sparkfun] announced a new board called the IOIO (pronounced “yo-yo”) this week that allows communication from your Android devices to your upcoming projects.

The board hasn’t been released yet; [sparkfun] is still pulling together documentation and waiting on their first production run. We do know that the board contains a PIC24F MCU, and will give your phone analog input,  and Digital I/O, PWM, I2C, SPI, and UART control. Communication with the board is over the USB port on your phone.

The brilliant thing about this board is that an external programmer isn’t required. Everything you connect to this board can be controlled from within Android apps. We covered Android development in a hackaday tutorial series before, so now it’s possible to put these skills to give your projects a touch screen, internet and bluetooth connections, a camera, or your phone’s accelerometers. Very slick.

E’ proprio di alcune ore fa la notizia di un nuovo sistema di protezione per le proprie applicazioni. Google infatti avrebbe creato una libreria esterna, compatibile da android 1.5 in poi, che darebbe la possibilità agli sviluppatori di aggiungere un nuovo livello di protezione alle proprie apps.

Il sistema è semplice: per ogni sviluppatore vengono create delle chiavi pubbliche e private. L’applicazione potrà richiedere, ogni volta che gli pare, ai servers di google lo stato di pagamento da parte dell’utente utilizzatore.

We’ve been on the prowl for a low-cost Android MID that, you know, works well. We were originally excited by the Eken M001 but early reports about poor battery life, coupled with the fact that it only runs Android 1.6 soured our interest. [Carnivore] didn’t let those things turn him away, instead he modified the M001 to meet his needs. He added a USB hub and flash drive inside as well as a few additional connectors for external devices. He’s also inserted a front-facing camera and improved battery life from a 1600 mAh capacity up to 5200 mAh. This means he can now depend on 7-12 hours of use depending on the power saving features he chooses. This does come at a cost, he had to add room inside the case so he annexed a project box for the back cover. As you can see above, he did a beautiful job of making it look right, but it’s lost that thin-sexiness it once had. See [Carnivore's] feature walk through after the break.

Quest’oggi abbiamo l’APad iRobot, dal design molto simile a quello dell’iPad di Apple. E’ basato su Android ed è dotato di un display da 7 pollici con una risoluzione di 800×480 pixel e un rapporto d’aspetto 16:9.

The Alex eReader has been rooted. This little handheld was the belle of the ball at CES 2010 when it came to eReaders. Now that is has been release into the wild it takes its place next to the heavy hitters that have already seen root access. If you’re unfamiliar, this device boasts a six-inch e-ink display and a 320×240 LCD touchscreen interface. Now that you can make it do your bidding, what are your plans for the $350 tablet? I wanted to be able to view/sniff some traffic from my android phone. Mostly to see how "closed" the gowalla checkin api was (not very).The first couple suggestions were to connect the phone to wifi and checkin. To do this from the comfort of my own home meant checking in from home and I didn't really want to do that.Installing the android emulator is pretty straightforward, the only problem is that it doesnt come with the android market or the ability to easily(?) download apps to mess with.After some googling I found this post:http://tech-droid.blogspot.com/2009/11/android-market-on-emulator.htmlThis enabled me to get a working android emulator with android market place.Go here and download the sdk for whatever system you are using, I'm on ubuntu...You'll need to download some platforms as the sdk doesnt come with much of anyting by default.To launch the Android SDK and AVD Manager on Windows, execute SDK Setup.exe, at the root of the SDK directory. On Mac OS X or Linux, execute the android tool in the /tools/ folder. This will start the GUI (least on linux --I dont care about windows)Go to available packages and download sdk package for Android 1.5 or 1.6. I used 1.5over in installed packages you should see the sdk when its all done.Go here and download the system image for 1.5 or 1.6Create an AVD (1.5 or 1.6). populate it how you want, I gave it one of everything on the hardware.After you create the avd, you should have an avd folder in your .android folder. Something like .android/avd/[avdname]Copy the system.img file you downloaded from HTC in there.start that puppy upIf you went the 1.5 route you are probably getting a slide keyboard to open thing. Sometimes the most interesting stuff in an unfamiliar city is hiding in plain sight. With the right location-aware and map-friendly web tools, you can find the best cheap eats, picture-worthy sights, and much more. Start with this list of in-the-know apps.

We've previously taken an example tour around Austin, TX with tools to find the best spots in new cities, some of which are detailed here, as well. For this list's sake, we'll assume you're familiar with the most popular local search tools, like Yelp, UrbanSpoon, and, well, Google and Google Maps. Beyond those tools, we wanted to provide a list of less well-known sites and services that pin down stuff you might not know about that is right around the corner.

10. See what pads are for rent or sale
There are plenty of webapps that let you cherry-pick apartments for rent and homes for sale from the comfort of your monitor at home. If you're right in the perfect neighborhood and want to know what's up, you've got other options. Realtor.com's iPhone app is the newest entrant to the game, but has, as you might expect, quite a database to pull from. HotPads.com has a similar location-aware app for Android phones, one that can also provide turn-by-turn directions to any listing you pluck out. Real estate data and "Zestimate" provider Zillow has an iPhone app too, but can also work from any phone with its very minimalist text interface. 9. Find photo-worthy sites with Flickr
I use Flickr mainly to find the food that people feel is worth embarrassing their table enough to take a picture of, but the photo-sharing site's nearby photo finder helps you discover sights and locations you never knew about, right around the corner from where you are. You can simply search Flickr for your location ("Chicago"), find a neat-looking photo and add /nearby to the photo's URL, or you can hit the "Map" link on any photo that has its location tagged. 8. Snag a comfortable Wi-Fi spot
If all you want is a connection, we've got you covered. Gina's definitive guide to finding free Wi-Fi recommends such tools as WeFi and JiWire, along with other means of hopping on the net from almost anywhere. If you want somewhere you'll actually enjoy being with your laptop, LaptopFriendlyCafes.com covers 104 spots in New York City (and a scant few shops elsewhere), or type "laptop" or "wi-fi" into local review aggregator Yelp and see what comes up.

7. See what's listed nearby on Craigslist
Having a good handle on the Craigslist listings for the area you're in is like knowing someone who's always up in everybody's business—and knows where all the deals and low-key events are happening. Craigsphone for iPhone and Android phones does a great job of reformatting Craigslist for mobile viewing, calling, and mapping; in NYC and San Francisco's Bay Area, it can even show you what's close to your exact location. 6. Find things to do on Goby
If you have time before you head out, either on a trip or in your neighborhood, hit up your local alternative weekly's web site or newspaper's entertainment guide. If you're looking for a quicker glance, listing and calendar aggregator Goby does a notably good job of rounding up everything that's listed as a public or paid even in and around a location. Most of the stuff tends toward high-profile events and family-friendly happenings, but that might be perfect for that one rained-out vacation day in an otherwise sunny city. (Original post)

5. Catch an awesome concert
Unless you're married to, or best friends with, a concert promoter, you're going to have a few moments every year where you'll hear about an awesome show by a band you're digging at a neat venue—last week. Not so if you sign up at Bandsintown, or grab its iPhone app, both of which can keep you in the know about shows coming to your town, or whatever you consider a reasonable driving distance. Music streaming and discovery service Last.fm can also email you about shows from its vast database of artists happening nearby, and there is, of course, always signing up for notifications at your truly favorite artists' web sites. 4. Learn what's around the corner with Near Me Now
Google's not the first entrant into the geo-location game, but the new "Near Me Now" link on its mobile home page is notable for being quick, simple, and not requiring a separate app to access (it's all web-based). It's out right now for iPhone and Android phones, but we hope it expands soon, as the pleasure of finding out scads of info about all the restaurants on the street you're facing, with the click of a link, belongs on every phone. 3. Find great eats and drinks on semi-snobby boards
Sites and apps that offer restaurant reviews often suffer from overstuffed and not-quite-trustworthy data. A great, authentic Somali restaurant might get only one single-star review from an eater expecting something different, while a sugary-sauced Chinese joint might get a high volume of three-star ratings because, well, it's always open. Visit the forums of foodie sites like Chow/Chowhound, eGullet, and Roadfood.com, do a search for your town, and see what people serious enough to sign up for a site named "Chowhound" and the like are saying. For a tall pint of great beer, try Beer Advocate's forums.

2. See streets in augmented reality
Remember how the Terminator could pull up information on anything he saw, as he saw it? With an iPhone or Android unit, you are (scarily?) close to that reality. Apps like augmented reality browser Layar for iPhones and Androids, and the "Monocle" in the Yelp iPhone app use your phone's camera, GPS chip, and motion/balance sensors to take what you're looking at, pull down the web's knowledge about it, and bring it back to you. Yelp shows businesses that have been reviewed by somebody, anybody, while Layar is the true walking tour app. You choose which "layers" to add to your view, like Wikipedia mentions, Flickr photos, real estate listings, and Google Maps listings. It's like having someone back at your computer meticulously research everything you're seeing and feed it to you, but you don't have to wear a Secret-Service-style earpiece to do so. The new classic GasBuddy is always reliable, but MSN Auto's overnight gas price finder has earned kudos, too. For cheap food and drinks, give Cheap-Ass Food a look, and give MappyHour a peek for drink specials. If you're looking for a way to spend some time without having to eat, drink, or drop much cash, DiscountYeti finds free museum days and other local discounts and maps them out for you.
