NBC lays out 2012 London Olympics broadcast plan on TV, internet, apps and in 3D (video) -- Engadget
Love it or hate it, we're stuck with NBC as our Olympics broadcaster in the US, and the company recently laid out its full plans for the 2012 Olympics in London this summer. The good news first: NBCOlympics.com will live stream every single event (they'll even be on YouTube, and in the UK the BBC has its own plans) for the first time ever including streams of each of its channels, encompassing 3,500 total hours and the awarding of all 302 medals. The bad news is that if you're not a cable subscriber, many of those hours will not be available to you, and even if you are, you're looking at a (likely convoluted) authentication sign-in process. That's a little bit of pain, sure, but it should mean what we've been asking for -- the ability to watch all Olympics events as they happen, not tape delayed for prime time after viewing grainy bootleg streams over the internet. Also new for the internet are multiple streams for the same event, so for example, viewers can select a particular gymnastics apparatus or track and field event at will.

Disney’s ESPN in Talks With Apple for Expanded TV Access - Bloomberg
ESPN, the most-watched U.S. sports network is making more programming available online and on mobile devices to reach customers watching TV in new formats. The network now provides subscribers ESPN3, a digital channel that’s part of the WatchESPN app, to subscribers through Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Xbox video-game console as part of some pay-TV plans, including from Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ)’s FiOS and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)
“We’re a platform-agnostic content company,” Bratches, the network’s executive vice president of affiliate and advertising sales, said today in an interview. “To the extent that in the future there’s an opportunity with Apple to authenticate through the pay-TV food chain as we’re doing with Microsoft, that’s something that we will participate in.”

Younger viewers say hello to online video in 2012 - Inside AdWords
Finally, our research showed that online campaigns added much-needed frequency to help increase brand recall for the light TV viewer. Combining YouTube and GDN drove a 27 percent increase in impressions, since even light TV viewers exposed to both TV and online ads saw more online ads than TV.

Overall, the results suggest that adding YouTube and the GDN to your TV network campaigns improves effectiveness in several powerful ways, helping to:
Reach a valuable, complementary, younger audience
Add much-needed frequency to light TV viewers
Deliver media more evenly across light and heavy TV viewers, reducing waste
Do all of this both efficiently and affordably

HBO's 'Game Of Thrones' On Track To Be Crowned Most Pirated Show Of 2012 - Forbes
With its popularity swelling and no easy way to watch for viewers without cable, HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” is inspiring massive levels of piracy, according to numbers from the BitTorrent-tracking and analysis firm Big Champagne. By the firm’s rough estimate, the second season of the show has been downloaded more than 25 million times from public torrent trackers since it began in early April, and its piracy hit a new peak following April 30th’s episode, with more than 2.5 million downloads in a day.

“It certainly appears to be the most pirated show of the year,” says John Robinson, a senior media analyst with Big Champagne. He says it’s too early to measure definitively, but the company’s data so far as well as the popularity rankings on download site the Pirate Bay point to “Game of Thrones” as filesharers’ favorite show of 2012. “The fact that it’s consistently at the top of the Pirate Bay’s top one hundred TV show chart seems like a pretty in-your-face leading indicator of the huge volume at which this is being shared.”

Time Warner Cable and Viacom Settle Lawsuit Over iPad Television Streaming - Mac Rumors
Time Warner Cable and Viacom have settled their legal entanglements regarding Time Warner's streaming of Viacom video content on its iPad app, according to the New York Times.
The breakthrough comes as a result of a settlement between Time Warner Cable and Viacom, which owns cable channels like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV and others. For months there had been a heated dispute over whether the cable company should have access to Viacom programs through its TWCable TV app.

On Wednesday, Viacom said that the companies had agreed "to resolve their pending litigations" and that "all of Viacom’s programming will now be available to Time Warner Cable subscribers for in-home viewing via Internet protocol-enabled devices such as iPads."

Apple in Talks to Bring 'WatchESPN' App to Apple TV - Mac Rumors
Bloomberg briefly reports that Apple and Disney are in talks to bring sports network ESPN's WatchESPN application [App Store] to the Apple TV set-top box.
ESPN subscribers with AppleTV would gain access to the network’s Internet service on their TV sets. [Sean] Bratches, the network’s executive vice president of affiliate and advertising sales, spoke in an interview today.
The brief report doesn't specify exactly how access to the WatchESPN functionality on the Apple TV would work, but currently customers of a number of cable and Internet companies have varying levels of access to the app's content on iOS and other platforms, which includes nearly all of ESPN's live broadcasts including online-only ESPN3 content.

LG shows off the best Google TV yet, with motion controls, dual-core CPU, 3D | VentureBeat
What truly differentiates LG’s Google TV entries is the company’s motion-control “Magic Remote.” Waving LG’s remote around felt smoother than using Sony or Logitech’s Google TV trackpads, and it was surprisingly accurate. The remote communicates with an infrared device embedded at the front of the television, similar to the Nintendo Wii’s sensor bar. The Magic Remote supports gestures and it also has a built-in microphone for voice commands.

The Magic Remote itself feels nice, with a rounded portion that makes it comfy in your hand. There is a scroll wheel on the front, along with the most commonly used Google TV buttons, and a full QWERTY thumb keyboard on the back.

Want to reinvent TV? Don’t forget the TV — Online Video News
A TV that consists of many little displays working together, a TV that’s always on, a TV the size of your living room wall and a TV that obeys you like a well-trained dog: That’s a lot to swallow, especially if you’ve thought of the next wave of apps as innovation in the TV space.

However, it may be time to think bigger, and leave some of the assumptions of what TV is — and what TV sets are — behind. “TV has to start defining a future for itself,” Thexton told me. And that future may not fit into a 60- or 70-inch bezel.

Otherwise, the real-time video era will hit us more like tsunami than a stream. Every conference talk. Every concert. Every birthday party. HOLLYN-wood (Norman, that is) » Do We Really Want To OWN Our Media?
, said the following fascinating thing. “People don’t want to own media anymore.” People, she said, want to view (and, I assume, rent), not own.

This flies in the face of the prevailing wisdom of only two years ago, which said that people wanted to hold onto their media, that they would rather download music and films than stream them. But that is clearly no longer the case.  I prefer to listen to music on Spotify, rather than download it to my iTunes library. I prefer to watch movies on Netflix rather than buy the DVD or download. So it’s not only physical media that is dying, but bits and bytes on my drives.  Yeah, I like to download things on occasion, or for my classroom use, but I confess that I’m an outlier. The DVD of Matrix that I lent my daughter is still sitting in her internal DVD drive.  Not only does that mean that I don’t need it to watch, but it also means that she doesn’t have the need of her DVD drive. Mix CDs are gone.  Playlists are in.

Put someone in charge of audience development.
Give them latitude to think about the interplay between distribution and content, so that they can marry the two. Like a head of programming for a cable network, they should be tasked to realize the full potential of your digital channels. They should support the delivery of your content, and they should also provide back pressure to your content creators. Don’t merge it into your editorial jobs — that’s too precarious. Make it its own discipline.

Rumor: Hulu Will Soon Require Viewers To Have A Cable Subscription [Update: It'll Happen, But Not "Soon"] | TechCrunch
Update: We just talked to a source close to Hulu. According to our source, Hulu and its content providers have talked about this move toward authentication since 2009. Our source noted that Hulu has no interest in being a first mover here and that a requirement for authentication is likely still a few years out. Hulu, however, does want to be a good partner and may have to give in to its partners’ pressure soon or later. Even though an authentication requirement isn’t likely to happen right away, though, our source notes that what could happen relatively soon is that the content providers could require longer delays before their shows become available on the service for non-subscribers. Cable subscribers, under this model, would get access to a show on Hulu the next day, while non-subscribers would have to wait at least 30 days. This model would likely also apply to Hulu Plus subscribers.

Cross-Platform Report: How We Watch From Screen to Screen | Nielsen Wire
TV is Still the Center of Viewing
In the past year, the number of homes with an HDTV grew by more than 8 million to 80.2 million, leaving little doubt that the TV screen remains the dominant platform on which to consume video content. But the means by which the content is delivered appear to be shifting.

Traditional—live and timeshifted—TV viewing remains the primary role of the TV, accounting for more than 33 hours per week despite a decline one half of one percent in time spent compared to Q4 2010. To fill the gap, consumers are finding new ways to use their TVs.

Hulu, Fox move to change model of free TV streaming - NYPOST.com
The effort comes as entertainment companies continue to face drastic shifts in home viewing habits. Overall spending on home entertainment edged up 2.5 percent to $4.45 billion in the first quarter as a surge in digital streaming — which rose more than fivefold to $549 million — offset a continuing collapse in video rentals, according to Digital Entertainment Group.

Hulu, owned by News Corp., Disney, Comcast and Providence, could see its March audience, as measured by ComScore, shrink after authentication. Hulu racked up some $420 million in ad revenue last year and is expected to do well in this year’s ad negotiations.

TV Viewers Are Missing in Action - NYTimes.com
In the four television weeks starting March 19, NBC lost an average of 59,000 viewers (about 3 percent) in that 18-to-49 age category compared with the same period last year, CBS lost 239,000 (8 percent), ABC lost 681,000 (21 percent) and Fox lost 709,000 (20 percent).

In the last few weeks, new viewership lows for network series have been recorded nightly among 18- to 49-year-olds, the group that still commands the highest advertising prices.

The declines have not discriminated. The bad news has been the same for hits, like ABC’s “Modern Family,” which had its lowest rating for the season (4.0 or about 5.2 million viewers) and less popular shows, like NBC’s “Community,” which descended to 1.3 (about 1.7 million viewers). Several other shows, like “Glee” and “Touch” on Fox, and “Missing” and “Suburgatory” on ABC, all hit their lowest ratings ever last week.

Apple courts EPIX for upcoming TV: sources | Reuters
Apple Inc began talks earlier this year to stream films owned by EPIX, which is backed by three major movie studios, on devices including a long-anticipated TV, according to two people with knowledge of the negotiations.

Apple, which now sells a $99 set-top box that hooks up to a television set and lets users stream online content from Netflix and the MLB channel, opened discussions with three-year-old EPIX, created by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, MGM and Viacom's Paramount Pictures.

One of the sources told Reuters that any discussions would apply to its set-top box and also to upcoming devices that stream content. Apple is widely expected to unveil a full-fledged TV product later this year or in early 2013 to drive its next phase of growth and potentially revolutionize the industry.

Apple has been stymied for much of the past year in securing marquee Hollywood content. Talks with EPIX are in the preliminary stages and no agreement is considered near, the source said.

Hulu Announces Four More Original Series, Bringing Total Lineup To Seven | TechCrunch
Hulu has been having a busy week. On Tuesday, the company announced a new deal for advertisers, which now charges them only for ad completions, and today at Hulu’s upfronts, the company announced the arrival of even more original shows.

We already knew of several of the programs Hulu discussed this morning, including “Battleground,” “Up to Speed,” and “A Day in the Life,” for example. But this morning, the company revealed several more additions, including “We Got Next,” “The Awesomes,” “Don’t Quit Your Daydream,” and “Flow.”

That Hulu is growing into original programming has been known for some time. Although a story in this week’s NYT brought new attention to the TV streaming service, Hulu had first announced “Battleground,” a scripted political comedy, back in January, as the first show to kick off its then growing lineup of original series.

Today, Hulu revealed several more additions to that lineup. It’s notable that there are even some bigger name stars participating this time, including SNL’s Seth Meyers and Michael Shoemaker, for example, as well as HBO’s Entourage lead Adrian Grenier

NimbleTV Aims to Stream TV on Devices - NYTimes.com
In a move that could hasten the slow pace of so-called TV Everywhere, a technology start-up is introducing a way to move a whole subscription’s worth of TV onto the Web, with or without the subscription company’s permission.
Enlarge This Image

Chester Higgins Jr./The New York Times
Anand Subramanian, the chief executive of NimbleTV, a service that will begin a limited test in New York City on Monday.
The start-up, called NimbleTV, will begin testing its service with a limited number of users on Monday. The service takes the package of television channels that a customer buys through a distributor like Dish Network, then streams the package onto the Web, allowing the customer more options for viewing than most distributors now allow. It also allows for thousands of hours of TV recording via a virtual digital video recorder.

NimbleTV is the latest example of technology companies trying to break into the closed system of television distribution in the United States. As Americans buy more smartphones and tablet computers, cable and satellite distributors are under pressure to provide TV access on more screens, and entrepreneurs are — depending on one’s view — either helping to provide it, or forcing it to happen on their own terms.

TV, Mobile See Gains in Viewing Time - eMarketer
Despite an increasing fixation with all things digital—including online video viewing—US adults are still watching more and more traditional TV, whether it’s live or recorded on a DVR or DVD, eMarketer estimates. The average adult consumer spends 4 hours and 34 minutes each day watching TV and video on a traditional television set this year, up 10 minutes from last year.

Time spent with the internet and mobile phones was also up—by 7.7% and 30%, respectively—and while adults are spending less time than last year with radio and print publications, the increases to TV and digital also mean an increase in total time spent with media, to 11 hours and 33 minutes.

Mobile’s 30% jump from 2010 helped propel it past the 1-hour mark, but also means that US adults now spend more time with their mobile phones than with print magazines and newspapers combined, at 1 hour and 5 minutes vs. just 44 minutes.

Data Shows Video Accounts For 60% of MSO and ISP Traffic, 50% Of That Comes From Netflix | Dan Rayburn - StreamingMediaBlog.com
In a recent discussion with transparent caching provider Qwilt, the company shared with me data from some of their ISP and MSO customers in the U.S. and Europe. At one major MSO in the U.S., 60% of their traffic comes from video content. Netflix makes up 50% of that traffic and also leads in total viewing time.

And from a major ISP in Europe (see charts below), Netflix become the second largest online video service in the UK in under three months. While the BBC iPlayer has the second largest online video volume in the UK, they are currently migrating their platform to HTTP from RTMP which is the reason you don't see them in the top sites graph.

While these numbers should not come as any surprise to those who talk to MSOs, ISPs and carriers, it is further evidence that transparent caching solutions and licensed and managed CDN platforms are starting to play a very crucial role with those who own and operate the last-mile networks.

We'll be discussing and hearing directly from MSOs and carriers on this topic at the Content Delivery Summit next month.

The 5 Most Over-Hyped “Future of TV” Topics | TechCrunch
From some of the chatter out there, it seems like the prerequisites to have “deep knowledge” about the TV industry is to have ever watched TV.  Yes, that sounds pretty cynical, but I see post after post espousing wisdom on topics that are so misguided it makes my head shake – involuntarily.  While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions, there’s just something to be said for a little research, a little fact checking, and deep diving with industry experts.  I think the “future of TV” industry at large would benefit greatly from a little more of the above, and a little less jumping on bandwagons.

Accordingly, here are the 5 topics I see on practically a daily basis that are just plain tired, and should be put to rest.

Video apps seeing strong growth with Facebook Timeline | VentureBeat
Viddy first launched its Timeline app in February. Viddy makes one of the most popular apps in the Apple App Store, and since rolling out Facebook Actions, it has doubled the number of average daily signups and has grown from 60,000 monthly active users (MAUs) to more than 920,000 monthly active users.

Vevo only started integrating with Facebook recently, but it’s already seeing a 200 percent uptick in daily registrations. Also, Vevo stated that the majority of its traffic — 60 percent — comes via Timeline posts on Facebook.

Izlesene is a Turkey-based video site. Facebook reported this company has seen its MAUs skyrocket from 250,000 to a whopping 6.5 million since last September. Finally, French startup Dailymotion reported 9 million new users for the Dailymotion Timeline app over the past two months, bringing in a total of 6 million site visitors each day.

These kinds of growth numbers are pretty typical for most of the larger apps we’ve seen that have reported post-Timeline-app growth stats. For example, back in February, Pinterest, Fab, and a slew of other lifestyle apps said their numbers were skyrocketing directly due to Actions’ implementation on users’ Timelines. During the same month, we heard similar stories from media outlets such as MTV News and the Daily Show.

We even had some one-on-one time with Goodreads founder Otis Chandler to talk about “the Facebook bump” — for Goodreads, this meant nearly 6.5 million actions published to Facebook over a two-month period. “We hoped for it, but we didn’t know it would be to this extent,” said Chandler, echoing the similar sentiments of many founders in his position.

Nokia TV coming to Lumia smartphones in Finland – Nokia Conversations : the official Nokia blog
Like Nokia Music and Nokia Reading, Nokia TV creates a free signature hub experience for catch-up TV services.

When the service launches, users of Lumia smartphones in Finland will be able to conveniently browse or search through the available catalogues of catch-up TV services from major local broadcasters and then stream a chosen show directly to their phone – without any sign up or registration.

“With Nokia TV we are bringing existing services in Finland together in a convenient way. We’re making it easier for people to find and watch TV, while supporting broadcasters’ existing internet TV business models,” said Mika Suomela, head of TV and video at Nokia.

Minimal Mac | TV Is Broken
I say all of this to set up the fact that Beatrix has little idea of how traditional TV works and seeing her first real exposure to it was enlightening to say the least.

The first time came after attempting to walk to a parade a few blocks away and getting caught in one of the area’s famous torrential downpour rainstorms and having to turn back. Wet from head to toe and cold, we figured finding something fun for Beatrix to watch on that great big screen would lessen Beatrix’s disappointment at missing the parade. After scrolling through what seemed like a hundred options in the built-in program guide, I finally found a channel that had something on that would hold her interest — Shrek.

I turn to that, Beatrix approves, and we watch. Then, a few minutes later, a commercial comes on. The volume difference is jarring to say the least. I would safely guess it is fifty percent louder than the show. I hurriedly reach for the remote and turn it down…

“Why did you turn the movie off, Daddy?”, Beatrix worriedly asks, as if she has done something wrong and is being punished by having her entertainment interrupted. She thinks that’s what I was doing by rushing for the remote.

Women ditching TV guide for Facebook - Telegraph
Sixty-eight percent of women are now using Facebook more than traditional TV guides to dictate their viewing habits, a new piece of research from Carphone Warehouse’s Geek Squad team.
They are preferring to receive recommendations from friends and family on Facebook – rather than from links in emails or from other sites – in a bid to avoid spam or illegal content.
Last year, Facebook introduced a series of new content apps to the platform – which makes it easier for people to share what they are watching or listening to and recommend content to others. With many such apps, such as the Spotify app, people can access content without leaving Facebook, and each time somebody accesses a new piece of content – the activity appears in people’s news feeds so their friends can see what they are enjoying.

INVIDI TECHNOLOGIES
When retailer John Wanamaker
said “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted – the trouble is I don’t know which half.” - he hadn’t met addressable television advertising and there is nothing like television to turn on an audience. It’s ability to reach out and touch a national audience is undeniable. But its accountability as an advertising media is sketchy at best. The simple fact that brand managers continue to buy television advertising at staggering levels speaks volumes for its raw delivery.

Liveblog & white paper: IHS Screen Digest talks connected devices & audiences | MIPBlog
There are around 2.5 TVs per household in North America and Europe – a figure that won’t grow much in the coming years – but by 2014 there will be four devices per home that are neither TVs nor PCs: namely tablets, smartphones, games consoles and others. And these device types provide an access point into the home for content.
“Depending on who you are within that supply chain… you have a different consumer control,” said Morrod, who also noted that pay TV operators are starting to embrace the idea of multi-screen TV, particularly when it comes to distributing TV channels for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.
“But there is no new money, it’s all about audience retention,” said Morrod. Pay TV subscribers aren’t paying extra for this multiscreen access, in other words.

Liveblog: Rovio’s Nick Dorra talks Angry Birds | MIPBlog
Rovio sees a very strong shift from traditional media consumption patterns into mobile entertainment consumption, said Dorra. “In the US, people watch 150-160 hours of television every month, but the top apps are already bringing 20 hours per month. That’s huge, and it’s just the beginning.”
Dorra then sat down with moderator Nic Newman for a chat about Rovio’s strategy and future direction.
The series will be 52 episodes of 2.5-3 minute episodes, rolled out in the Autumn of this year. “We’re going to roll it out on all possible devices. We’re looking at building a video app for that, and we’re also looking at partnerships and so on… We want to be on all screens.”

So weit, so herkömmlich.

Angry Birds animated TV series to premiere in Autumn 2012 | Technology | guardian.co.uk
"We're looking at building a video app for that, and we're also looking at partnerships and so on... We want to be on all screens."

Those partnerships include a deal with Samsung announced in January 2012 that involves an app for the company's range of Smart TV internet-connected televisions.

Rovio acquired Finnish animation studio Kombo in June 2011 to help develop Angry Birds into more than just a gaming brand. The same month, it recruited former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel as an adviser, sparking talk of a full Angry Birds film.

"It's in development, but it won't be out in 2013 or 2014," Dorra told the MIPTV audience. "You'll have to bide your time and first watch all of our shorts!"

The Boat that Hacked TV - Rewired State
The challenge

TV is in disruption and the days of traditional TV watching are numbered.

Audiences want to interact with the programmes they love and are beginning to expect more than a one-directional, passive viewing experience. As X-Factor and Big Brother have proven…

How can television channel management, programme commissioners and programme makers introduce social TV into more programming?
How can programmes currently being creating be future-proofed, and how could they integrate the social media tools of the future?
How can each TV genre, with its own challenges, channel this new approach to TV viewing?
How can investing in social TV now, ensure return on investment in the future?

TV Hack Day Shows That TV is Way Behind the Music Industry
It feels like the TV industry is roughly where the music industry was in 2005 in terms of data and its approach to the Internet – aware it needs to change, and making baby steps, but nowhere near the demand from the public and developers alike. By comparison to TV’s lack of open data, there’s a wealth of real-time data about the music playing on many radio stations around the world, which has been used for purposes as diverse as artist analytics and music discovery for consumers.

So, what did the ten participants manage to come up with in these challenging circumstances? Here are the five that caught our imaginations.

French ‘Three Strikes’ Law Slashes Piracy, But Fails to Boost Sales | TorrentFreak
A new report on the effectiveness of the French three-strikes anti-piracy law claims that it managed to cut Internet piracy in half last year. While lobbyists are making preparations to show these great results to politicians worldwide, there is one thing the report fails to mention. Despite the claimed decrease in piracy, revenues through legal channels are down as well. This is strange, because in previous years these losses were solely attributed to piracy.

DramaFever, a fast growing Asian Hulu, raises $4.5M from YouTube veterans | VentureBeat
Drama Fever has around 400 series from South Asia, mostly Korea, totaling over 10,000 hours of content, which is watched by an audience that is, surprisingly, 75% non-Asian and 60 percent caucasian. “This is great TV. It’s like the Desperate Housewives of Asia,” said Bak. “We’re offering them a window into another world.”

The plan for the funding is to double the size of the engineering team and replicate the success Drama Fever has had with other international markets. “With broadband spreading to most homes, the world is getting flatter,” said Seung. “We think there is a lot of potential to bring the 80-90% of great content created outside Hollywood, in Latin America telenovelas or Bollywood movies, and bring that to a high quality web service with top notch translation.”

Right now Drama Fever has a freemium business model, with about 15,000 paying subscribers who spend $10 a month and the rest watching ad-supported content backed by blue chip names like Toyota and Wells Fargo.

Watch popular Korean dramas for free, the best of kdramas
We created DramaFever to give you a better way to find and watch the best TV and movies from around the world, and create a community you can enjoy being a part of.

We're particularly big fans of television dramas and telenovelas, especially those from Asia and Latin America. With engaging story lines and top notch talent, these dramas are incredible entertainment. Unfortunately in the past, it's been difficult for American viewers to watch their favorite dramas and discover new ones. Before DramaFever, the best options were websites with pirated videos and bootleg DVDs.

ORA.TV
Ora.TV is a new digital television venture that will create high-quality video programming for digital distribution via a variety of platforms, such that it is seamlessly available on phones, laptops, tablets, connected televisions, and other devices. Unlike linear cable channels, from its inception Ora (which means “now” in Italian) will be an on-demand network, producing a wide range of stand-alone content that transcends traditional format distinctions. The company will produce shows that resemble traditional TV in terms of production quality and content but which will be available in a variety of formats.

The network is funded by América Móvil, the leading Latin American wireless service provider, with a majority interest held by noted global business leader Carlos Slim Helú. Ora.TV marks the return to television of broadcast news legend Larry King, and it will be led by CEO Jon Housman, who until recently was the President of Digital Journalism for News Corporation.

Ora.TV is based in New York City and will be launching programming later in 2012.

World’s Richest Man Launches Online Video Network ... With Larry King! | paidContent
Backed by the resources of the world’s wealthiest individual, Carlos Slim Helu, and guided by former News Corp. (NSDQ: NWS) digital journalism chief Jon Housman, the launch of on-demand online television network Ora.TV stands out among the flurry of recently touted online video-channel initiatives. But the selection of Larry King, the 78-year-old suspenders- wearing ex CNN talk-show host, as the channel’s celebrity face is something of a head-scratcher

As host of news-driven talk show Larry King Live from 1985-2010, King created a flagship brand for CNN that was instrumental in its rise from small Atlanta-based channel to cable-news powerhouse. But King’s ratings were in free fall at the time of his departure, dropping from their 2 million-a-show apex in 2003 to below 800,000 per night by the time he ceded his interviewer’s chair to Piers Morgan nearly two years ago. The idea that someone who has outlived his natural audience on TV could suddenly spawn a big following in the digital world would seem to betray the physics of the content world these days.

The commission has published a working paper calling for submissions on how these new services might have opened the competition in the market, a development which BSkyB will welcome.
The commission said that it is seeking views on a range of questions including to what extent services such as Netflix "substitute for traditional bundled pay-TV services and Sky Movies"; and whether the new entrants mean that Sky Movies and the first pay-TV window rights "are likely to remain as significant to consumers in choosing their pay-TV retailer".

Flat-Panel TV Sales Flatten in U.S. - John Paczkowski - News - AllThingsD
Market research firm IHS iSuppli said Tuesday that U.S.-bound shipments of flat-panel TVs will drop 5 percent in 2012, slipping to 37.1 million units from 39.1 million units in 2011. And that decline will likely continue for the next few years. By 2013, IHS figures shipments will drop to just below 35 million; by 2015, they’ll be hovering around 34.2 million.

Xbox Live TV: Why Microsoft, not Apple, will dominate television streaming. - Slate Magazine
Microsoft says that since it added voice search to its interface last year, the number of hours people spend on Xbox Live every month has increased by 30 percent. On average, Xbox Live members spend more than 80 hours a month using the service. More tellingly, people now spend more time using Xbox Live to watch stuff than to play games. Those numbers suggest that Microsoft has broken a key barrier in the living room: It has transformed the Xbox from just another gadget connected to your TV into the gateway to your set, the first thing you check when you want to watch something.

Microsoft: entertainment overtakes multiplayer gaming on Xbox | The Verge
Xbox 360. Xbox Live Gold members in the US are now spending an average of 84 hours per month on Xbox Live, with entertainment app usage more than doubled year on year. Globally, this has led to a 30 percent increase in the total hours spent on Xbox Live around the world.

XBOX ENTERTAINMENT APP USAGE DOUBLED IN THE PAST YEAR

The result of this increased Xbox Live activity means that for the first time on Xbox, entertainment usage has surpassed multiplayer game usage. Microsoft says that Xbox Live members in the US are now spending more time watching TV, music, and movies than they are playing multiplayer games. Although the company doesn't offer any stats for games usage on a whole versus entertainment apps, it's safe to say that its Live TV platform is off to a fairly good start.

eBay launches Watch With eBay iPad app, lets you 'shop like a star' -- Engadget
This year's SXSW isn't all about fancy rides and Instagram teasers, also in the mix is eBay's fresh iPad app, dubbed Watch With eBay. The free goodies will let you spend some cash (at least eBay's hoping you will) on bits related to what you're watching on TV, which is made possible by a zip code-based guide within the app. For example, you can snag a jersey that'll show your true colors while you bask in the majesty of Anthony Davis' unibrow during March Madness. Among other features are the ability to browse through most recently watched shows, bid on items and an option to "shop like your favorite celebrity." So, perhaps you could end up with one of those ugly sweaters from Community. Watch With eBay is live now, and you can grab it by hitting up the App Store on your Cupertino slate or directly from the source link below.
