Apple’s Siri Gains Traction–For Some Things
Only 37% of 4S owners said they definitely wanted voice-commands on their television set, while 20% said they did not want them there. Mr. Barrett said he attributes the “limited enthusiasm” for the feature on TVs to concerns it doesn’t work well in noisy areas. “When watching TV there is so much background noise,” he said.

Apple's universal remote concept hints at future television set
Apple's solution would simplify the user interface by having devices wirelessly transmit a specific interface for that device. The remote would receive this customized button layout, and dynamically present input options to the user without the clutter of a typical button-based universal remote.

The remote would also detect which appliances are within range of the controller. If, for example, a specific appliance could not be detected, the remote would gray that option out so the user would know it is not available.

The proposed invention, made public this week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, was first filed in September of 2011. It is credited to Albert Vidal.

Smart TV Motion Control, Voice Control and Face Recognition - Samsung CES 2012 Press Conference - YouTube
With Smart Interaction, Samsung is literally changing how you can interact with the TV. You will be able to 'listen, see and do' what you want, without ever touching a remote control. The TV will be even more intuitive to your needs.

You will be able to interact with your Samsung Smart TVs just like we interact with people, using voice, gestures and face. Take a look.

The face recognition seamlessly logs in each family member to their own Smart Hub profile. You will see your apps. Your family members will see theirs.

That's just a taste of what is possible with our Smart Interaction technology. What's more, we will open our APIs to developers so they can unleash their creativity and build apps that use motion control, voice control and face recognition

Samsung’s Smart TV evolves with motion, voice controls and upgrade slots | VentureBeat
Boo-keun Yoon, president of Samsung’s consumer electronics decision kicked off the press conference with some bold pronouncements about where the company’s Smart TVs are headed. He said eventually they’ll be able to “Listen, See, and Do” without any interaction with a remote control.

The company then played a quick demo video that showed off motion control capabilities — bringing Kinect-like controls directly to the TV.

Nuance announces Smart TV play called Dragon TV - Mass High Tech Business News
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Monday, Nuance unveiled Dragon TV, a voice and natural language processing software aimed at makers of TVs, set-top boxes, video game consoles and other devices, as well as cable service operators. The software is designed to allow TV viewers to command their televisions using voice, rather than the traditional remote control, initiating programming queries and navigating channels by name, rather than searching for the right number. In addition, the software is designed to let users communicate via SMS and other web-enabled services, through their connected TV sets and TV devices.

With Siri TV, Apple Will Dismantle the TV Networks - Ben Elowitz - Voices - AllThingsD
Beyond disaggregation, personalization is ultimately the most powerful consumer value of digital media. My mother’s TV experience was to walk over to her TV set and turn a dial to select among three channels to satisfy her individuality. But in the next generation, no two people will receive the same recommendations from the millions of content choices available.

BlinQ Is A Social Channel Guide For Your TV
In terms of hardware, you’ll need Ryz Media’s infra-red emitter, known as the “Q”, which plugs into the headset jack of any iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad device to transform the device into a universal remote. The app is free, but the infra-red emitter costs $9.99 (including shipping).

I don’t think I’d choose to have BlinQ replace my TV Guide all together but it is certainly a technology I’d use in addition to the TV Guide or channel guide. Another drawback is that the BlinQ app shows popularity of TV shows by people who are using the app. I’d rather see popularity of TV shows by people I know and trust (i.e. some of my Facebook friends). And I wonder how hard it would be for a cable company to implement a similar experience in the channel guide; similar to a ‘what’s trending,’ by show, but for TV sets.
