Disney’s ESPN in Talks With Apple for Expanded TV Access - Bloomberg
9 days ago by gugelproductions
ESPN, the most-watched U.S. sports network is making more programming available online and on mobile devices to reach customers watching TV in new formats. The network now provides subscribers ESPN3, a digital channel that’s part of the WatchESPN app, to subscribers through Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Xbox video-game console as part of some pay-TV plans, including from Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ)’s FiOS and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)
“We’re a platform-agnostic content company,” Bratches, the network’s executive vice president of affiliate and advertising sales, said today in an interview. “To the extent that in the future there’s an opportunity with Apple to authenticate through the pay-TV food chain as we’re doing with Microsoft, that’s something that we will participate in.”

Apple courts EPIX for upcoming TV: sources | Reuters
4 weeks ago by gugelproductions
Apple Inc began talks earlier this year to stream films owned by EPIX, which is backed by three major movie studios, on devices including a long-anticipated TV, according to two people with knowledge of the negotiations.
Apple, which now sells a $99 set-top box that hooks up to a television set and lets users stream online content from Netflix and the MLB channel, opened discussions with three-year-old EPIX, created by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, MGM and Viacom's Paramount Pictures.
One of the sources told Reuters that any discussions would apply to its set-top box and also to upcoming devices that stream content. Apple is widely expected to unveil a full-fledged TV product later this year or in early 2013 to drive its next phase of growth and potentially revolutionize the industry.
Apple has been stymied for much of the past year in securing marquee Hollywood content. Talks with EPIX are in the preliminary stages and no agreement is considered near, the source said.

Wu reports that "The two corporations have struck a deal to overhaul Sharp's division that makes LCD panels for televisions…" And that's one of the key points here. It's definitely an investment in overhauling Sharp's TV division – plain and simple.

Apple to buy Hollywood? Not a chance. — Online Video News

Starting costs for Apple — or anyone else for that matter — to build a subscription TV service will be in the mid-$30s at the very least. Which means it’s not going to roll out a $25 or $30 subscription service or undercut your local cable company on price anytime soon.
You know how every quarter analysts dissect however many billions of dollars Microsoft has lost in its Internet services business? That would be Apple TV’s media business, quarter after quarter, if it decided to go down this road. Sure, Apple has a lot of money. And sure, Apple could bear those costs. But why would it? Apple's universal remote concept hints at future television set
january 2012 by gugelproductions
Apple's solution would simplify the user interface by having devices wirelessly transmit a specific interface for that device. The remote would receive this customized button layout, and dynamically present input options to the user without the clutter of a typical button-based universal remote.
The remote would also detect which appliances are within range of the controller. If, for example, a specific appliance could not be detected, the remote would gray that option out so the user would know it is not available.
The proposed invention, made public this week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, was first filed in September of 2011. It is credited to Albert Vidal.

Apple Sold 1.4M Apple TVs in Most Recent Quarter vs. 2.4M Sold in All of Fiscal 2011 - Mac Rumors
january 2012 by gugelproductions
The current generation Apple TV was released at the beginning of fiscal 2011, which means Apple has sold 4.2 million 2nd Generation (iOS-based) Apple TVs in total. This is fairly impressive, especially considering Google's set-top box efforts have fallen flat thus far. However, even with these numbers, Tim Cook still considers Apple TV a "hobby" simply because on a dollar-for-dollar basis, the device barely makes a dent in Apple's earnings numbers.

AppleInsider | Apple's television could offer superior picture quality with advanced backlighting
january 2012 by gugelproductions
Apple has explored building displays with dynamic backlight adaptation for better picture quality, particularly when watching letterboxed widescreen movies on a high-definition screen.
The concept was revealed this week in a new Apple patent application discovered by AppleInsider. The filing, entitled "Dynamic Backlight Adaptation for Black Bars with Subtitles," focuses on improving picture quality when watching letterboxed content, like Hollywood movies, on an LCD display.
The application was filed just months ago, in September of 2011, and comes as rumors of a full-fledged Apple television set continue to build. One report this week claimed that Apple design chief Jonathan Ive has a 50-inch prototype set located in his secure work studio at the company's corporate headquarters.

The 50-inch Apple TV set rumor re-emerges | Apple Talk - CNET News
january 2012 by gugelproductions
The interesting tidbit comes from an unnamed source who worked at Apple, and told USA Today that "Apple is said to be looking at a 42-inch or larger LCD TV with built-in Wi-Fi," and that recently knighted Apple VP of industrial design Jony Ive has "a slick 50-inch TV" in the company's design studio.
The report suggests that Apple is not as far along with its TV set plans as was noted in a recent report from Taiwanese news site DigiTimes. Last week the outlet claimed Apple was in the process of ordering components to build 32-inch and 37-inch TV sets, which would go on sale in the second half of this year. Without acknowledging that report, USA Today adds a mention from DisplaySearch analyst Paul Gagnon that there's "no evidence" of Apple ordering LCD panels for the set, which "is at least a year away."

A cool interface will not save you. Siri is remarkable, and over time, I can see both its voice interface and AI elements playing a huge role in search and commands on the television. But just like Kinect, Siri alone won’t get it done. Munster argues, and I agree, that the UI will have to incorporate and accommodate a mix of remotes, voice and touch control. The problem is that still doesn’t get you applications like group chat or any serious gaming. You can wave around an iPhone or iPod like it’s a Wiimote, or play Angry Birds on a big screen. But if you’re otherwise still stuck plugging in your Xbox or Wii to the new Apple TV, aren’t we just back to the cords-and-remotes problem again?Xbox solves this problem with some elegance; Kinect gives you motion and voice, remotes give you familiar interfaces that work for 80% of you want to do, paired smartphones give you added versatility, and wired or wireless controllers give you complete control for serious gaming. It’s easy to forget how huge the gaming industry is, and how closely it’s become tied to television, the broader world of entertainment, and global markets. But Apple hasn’t forgotten. They know how exactly how many games they sell for iThings. They have to deliver something that takes advantage of that opportunity.

Apps Are Media | TechCrunch
december 2011 by gugelproductions
Traditional media industries are more restrictive in their licensing, and this is particularly true for TV shows and movies, which follow all sorts of arcane rules of availability across different distribution channels (theaters, Pay-Per-View, DVDs, cable, internet streaming). When you look at the glacial geographic advance of video and music on iTunes (and the internet, in general), it seems like we still have a long way to go before a global, legal market for digital media establishes itself in a meaningful way.

The Apple TV is being “subsidized” in the US. The price is so low there probably because it is benefiting from content sales. This is a compelling argument and it might suggest a strategy for Apple TV closer to that of Amazon’s Kindle than to any of the telecom or computing products Apple sells. This may have significant implications in the pricing of any future “TV” product from Apple.

Apple Moves Forward With TV Plans - WSJ.com
december 2011 by gugelproductions
In the recent meetings with media companies, the Apple executives, including Senior Vice President Eddy Cue, have outlined new ways Apple's technology could recognize users across phones, tablets and TVs, people familiar with the talks said.
In at least one meeting, Apple described future television technology that would respond to users' voices and movements, one of the people said. Such technology, which Apple indicated may take longer than some of its other ideas, might allow users to use their voices to search for a show or change channels.
Apple is still saying little about what specific software and devices it is working on. The people familiar with the meetings said the Cupertino, Calif., company was "vague" and that Apple hasn't made proposals to license shows for any new product offering.

Apple TV Set-Top Box Predicted to Sell 4 Million Units, Grab 32% Market Share in 2011 - Mac Rumors
december 2011 by gugelproductions
Market research firm Strategy Analytics today reported on the release of its new research report covering "connected TV players" such as the current Apple TV and Roku boxes. According to the report, Apple is predicted to reach sales of four million Apple TV units for 2011, leading the way in a rapidly-growing market with a 32% share.
“Apple is leading this nascent market, which it still considers a ‘hobby’.” says Jia Wu, Senior Analyst at the Connected Home Devices (CHD) service. “As Apple prepares for its expected launch of smart TVs in 2012, rival platforms must accelerate their development plans to keep Apple from running away with the connected TV business, as it has done in smartphones and digital music.”
The report also notes that Apple TV users tend to spend more money on TV shows and movies than users of other set-top connected TV players, with 30% of Apple TV owners reported have rented content compared to 20% of owners of other devices.

2. The TV replacement cycle sucks, as the average family won’t replace a TV for ~7-8 years, and that’s not a world Apple typically plays in either. Unlike phones (1 year) and PCs (2-3 years), consumers won’t be up for buying a new set very frequently, and the concept of having an “outdated” television will cause more infuriated people than Apple typically likes to create. Note: this is a concern of the entire “Smart TV” industry (well, it’s probably not, but it really should be), and you can mark my words that backlash is going to hit these manufacturers in the next 6-12 months.

Exclusive: Apple To Launch iTunes Replay In The Coming Weeks -- AppAdvice
august 2011 by gugelproductions
AppAdvice has been told and was able to confirm independently that Apple is on the edge of finally launching a full-fledged re-downloading and possibly streaming service named iTunes Replay.
In a nutshell, iTunes Replay is an extension to what Apple is already doing with iCloud and free re-downloads of previously purchased music. As Apple secures the remaining rights, TV Shows as well as Movies in iTunes will be given little arrow indicating whether they’re “iTunes Replay eligible”, that is, available to be downloaded subsequent times. Note that some content will unfortunately only be available to download five times and we don’t know how streaming will count towards that limit.

Fox: Apple will adopt Ultraviolet cloud movie format - Pocket-lint
july 2011 by gugelproductions
How about Apple though, so far the Cupertino company has resisted the allure of Ultraviolet in favour, presumably, of its own cloud video plans? "That also doesn't mean they won't," said Kaye. "From my perspective, when you're well established you sometimes take a 'wait and see'."
But he doesn't expect the tech giant to wait long. Its rivals may get a massive and telling head start if Apple's the only one not supporting the new cloud format:
"If you just take smartphones as an example, Android now enjoys quite a market advantage," Kaye told us. "And the same thing's going to happen in tablets. We also have all the other hardware that's a part of this ecosystem - the majority of hardware and software companies will create very strong competition, just like it has with Blu-ray. And we'll see what happens as we go forward.

HEARD ON THE STREET: Apple's Flashy Music Margins - WSJ.com
june 2011 by gugelproductions
This new service may prompt consumers to get the most storage possible on their various devices to ensure they have the space to hold everything. That means big profits for Apple, because it sharply marks up the cost of the NAND flash memory-storage chips used on its mobile devices.
Consider: Apple charges $100 more for an iPad or an iPhone with 32 gigabytes of storage than for one with 16 gigabytes. But that extra 16 GB of NAND flash likely costs Apple around $15. Gartner's research director for NAND flash and solid state drives, Joe Unsworth, estimates Apple pays about 90 cents for a gigabyte of NAND.

Songs, Books and Apps: What do the three media types tell us about the future of consumption? | asymco
june 2011 by gugelproductions
What I would point out is the emerging pattern that the three media ramps are separated by about an order of magnitude. In other words songs are 10x more downloaded than books (at a given point in the life of the media store) while apps are 10x more downloaded than songs. You would see this pattern emerge within the log chart as the three lines run parallel and equidistant.
Obviously, apps are going to be more popular than songs since many are free. And obviously songs are going to be more popular than books because many are much cheaper.
But painting this picture with price is only a rough sketch. The ways that these media are consumed (and consumable) fills in the details. The amount of energy needed to enjoy each varies greatly. The “digestibility” of the material is different. In a way, these are the same factors which are drawing consumption toward tweeting, blogging and browsing and away from paper based media.

You Can't Always Get What You Want: Apple's Disappointing Music Announcements at WWDC
june 2011 by gugelproductions
But it's important to note that Apple's new offer does not involve music streaming. True, you can have your music collection synced across devices (up to 10 of them). But you will still have to download the music you want to play on to your iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch or Mac. You won't be able to access your entire collection and randomly shuffle between all the glorious gigabytes.

If Apple can work out (or, if we can dream, perhaps secretly already has worked out) a deal to allow movies, in addition to music, to be bought and stored permanently in your iCloud account, then the Apple TV 2 suddenly changes from a machine for renting movies into a machine for buying or renting movies. What Safari’s “Reading List” in Lion means for Instapaper – Marco.org
may 2011 by gugelproductions
Starbucks practices extremely predatory site selection for their stores: they’ll intentionally move in right across the street from or immediately next door to independent coffee shops, in an unnecessarily aggressive effort to drive them all out of business.
It puts the bad ones out of business, but it actually helps the good ones:
“[Starbucks] just flat-out said, ‘If you don’t sell out to us, we’re going to surround your stores.’ And lo and behold, that’s what happened—and it was the best thing that ever happened to us.”

AppleInsider | Sources: Apple utilizing 'iCloud' internally, service to be more than music
april 2011 by gugelproductions
But evidence seen by AppleInsider suggests the service will go beyond music, and could be the central component of a revamped Apple's existing MobileMe service. To this end, reports dating back to February characterized Apple's plans future internet service plans as including a digital "locker" that would hold all of a users personal memorabilia, including photos, music and videos. That would negate the need for future Apple mobile devices like an iPhone to have a great deal of internal and costly flash memory storage.

Interview With MLB.com CEO Bob Bowman on Apple, Android, Facebook | Peter Kafka | MediaMemo | AllThingsD
april 2011 by gugelproductions
MLB.com boasts one of the most successful subscription businesses in digital media; last year, the company reported 1.5 million subscribers, and expects that number to hit 2 million this year. So it’s worth listening to Bowman’s take on Apple vs. Android, his company’s recent Facebook experiment, and why mobile advertising is taking off. Peter Kafka: You’ve complained publicly before about the difficulty in supporting multiple flavors of Android for your apps. But this year you’ve expanded the number of Android handsets you’re supporting from 6 to 11. Did you ever consider not working with Android at all? Bob Bowman The short answer is no. But what we have done is that we don’t support every Android phone. Because at some point, it’s diminishing returns. The Android user typically is less likely to buy, and therefore the ROI on developing for Android is different than it is for Apple. Why do you think an Android owner behaves differently than an iPhone owner? The iPhone and iPad user...

Amazon Cloud Player goes live, streams music on your computer and Android -- Engadget
march 2011 by gugelproductions
Oh snap! Look who just ate Apple and Google's lunch here? Minutes ago, Amazon rolled out its very own music streaming service which is conveniently dubbed the Amazon Cloud Player. Existing Amazon customers in the US can now upload their MP3 purchases to their 5GB cloud space -- upgradable to a one-year 20GB plan for free upon purchasing an MP3 album, with additional plans starting at $20 a year -- and then start streaming on their computers or Android devices. Oh, and did we mention that this service is free of charge as well? Meanwhile, someone will have some catching up to do, but we have a feeling it won't take them too long. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Update: As some readers have confirmed, it appears that the Cloud Player will support music purchased from iTunes as well, presumably from the post-DRM era. Update 2: Press release after the break.

Apple iOS dominates Euro smartphone usage • reghardware
february 2011 by gugelproductions
nd it's interesting to get some Euro-centric figures. Global sales tend to mask regional trends. The other most common data-set, for the US, gives a very slanted view of the market. Europe as a whole clearly favours iOS - its market share has run between 50 per cent and 45 per cent between January 2010 and January 2011 - which is well ahead of nearest rivals Symbian, BlackBerry and Android. It's no surprise to see the decline in Symbian usage - any more than it is to see the rise in Android mobile browsing, but BlackBerry usage certainly appears to have peaked, hitting 18 per cent and then falling back. And while Apple's share is trending downward, it's a very gentle decline.

Much as they were in 2010, tablet sales will be a high point of 2011–but even more so. According to Caris & Co. analyst Robert Cihra, tablet sales will more than triple, rising 226 percent to 54 million units. And of those, Cihra believes Apple will claim 67 percent. Which would spike iPad sales from 14 million this year to 36 million in 2011.

New iTunes Features Aim To Outdo DVD | paidContent

Buy the Will Ferrell comedy The Other Guys and you’ll notice three extras that can’t be found on DVD or any other digital platform. A search button allows you to input a word, and any mention of it in the script will be retrieved along with a link to the exact moment in the movie in which the line was uttered. A “clip & share” function lets the viewer take select scenes and post them to social networks. There’s also a playlist with songs from the film, which are linked to to places on iTunes where those songs can be purchased. The same features are also found on Sony’s Salt and Resident Evil: Afterlife.

ITunes Video Rentals Could Be $1 Billion Business by 2015, Analyst Says | John Paczkowski | Digital Daily | AllThingsD
january 2011 by gugelproductions
How big is Apple’s iTunes video rental business? In a research note today, Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall hazards a guess: Apple’s serving about 475,000 rentals a day and raking in upward of $60 million per quarter doing it. Not too shabby for a service launched in January of 2008. And if its growth follows a trend line similar to that of Netflix–which is certainly within the realm of possibility given sales of next-generation Apple TVs and the popularity of iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad–Marshall figures Apple’s iTunes rental operation will be big business by 2015.

Daring Fireball: Video Support for AirPlay Is Limited in iOS 4.2
november 2010 by gugelproductions
AirPlay is the killer feature for Apple TV. But perhaps we’d better keep that in the future tense for now: it’s going to be the killer feature for Apple TV. After installing today’s various software updates for iOS devices, the only apps I’ve seen where AirPlay works for video are the built-in iPod app (a.k.a. “Video” on the iPad and iPod Touch) and YouTube. In other apps, AirPlay is audio-only.
The most obvious shortcoming: You can’t use AirPlay to play videos shot on your iPhone. That’s an obvious feature, right? Shoot a video on your iPhone, then play it back for family and friends on your big TV via AirPlay. No syncing, no docking, no moving files around. Just hit play. But it doesn’t work in iOS 4.2.1 — even though you can use AirPlay to show still photos from the Photos app. I can’t get AirPlay video to work from Apple’s iMovie app for the iPhone, either. (Audio over AirPlay works just fine.)

"At this current rate, the iPad will pass gaming hardware and the cellular phone to become the 4th biggest consumer electronics category with estimated sales of more than $9 billion in the U.S. next year, according to Bernstein. TVs, smart phones and notebook PCs are the current three largest categories."
The iPad has so far benefited from a lack of direct competition in the market, an advantage that will eventually come to an end. For consumers, though, it still may be several months (or more) before the first competitive Android tablets hit retail shelves. If you're a publisher developing for a tablet, it would seem that the iPad is your best bet.

Apple (AAPL) seems to have a modest hit on its hands with the new Apple TV box. JMP Research analyst Alex Gauna writes this morning that the device is selling out in many of the company’s U.S. retail stores.
The analyst reports that checks find that “the new Apple TV product has continued to sell out in Apple stores across the nation after its launch last week.”
“We were not particularly surprised when we couldn’t get our hands on the Apple TV over this past introductory weekend in San Francisco, but when the scarcity persisted into this week it got us to checking and we subsequently learned that stores across the nation were selling out of their inventory on the same day as receipt in Boston, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C.,” he writes, “and online representatives corroborated this strength extends beyond our 20+ store checks.”

After showing off the demo of SHAtter exploit in action on an iPod touch 4G, the iPhone Dev-Team has now managed to jailbreak the newly released 2nd-gen Apple TV, running iOS 4.1 using SHAtter exploit loaded on PwnageTool. For those of you who don’t know, SHAtter is a low-level bootrom exploit which Apple will not be able to patch with a new firmware. Instead, they will have to introduce a revised hardware for all the current iOS devices to close the loophole. What this means is that once this jailbreak is out, all current iOS based devices will be pwned for life!

How VLC Works
After you install the VLC App on the iPad and launch it for the first time, it will tell you to use iTunes to load video files onto your iPad via the new File Sharing feature. From the Apps tab in iTunes, you’ll see a File Sharing section on the bottom of the screen. From here, you can copy files to and from the iPad. Once you have some media loaded, you’re ready to play.
Videos in VLC are placed on shelves for you to select. Once a video is selected, it will start playback in full-screen mode. When you stop and exit full screen mode, a little timer will appear in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail indicating how much of the video you’ve already viewed. The controls are somewhat limited, even by iPad standards, and will only allow you to manually scroll forward and back, as well as advance to the next and previous chapters, in addition to play/pause and volume functions.

HTTP Live Streaming Overview: Introduction
september 2010 by gugelproductions
HTTP Live Streaming lets you send audio and video over HTTP from an ordinary web server for playback on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and desktop computers. HTTP Live Streaming supports both live broadcasts and prerecorded content (video on demand). HTTP Live Streaming supports multiple alternate streams at different bit rates, and the client software can switch streams intelligently as network bandwidth changes. HTTP Live Streaming also provides for media encryption and user authentication over HTTPS, allowing publishers to protect their work.

Apple Is Live Streaming Sept. 1 Event To Test New Server Farm [Exclusive] | Cult of Mac
september 2010 by gugelproductions
Apple’s first live video broadcast in years is a test of the server farm’s ability to stream a future version of iTunes for iOS devices, our tipster says.
“The goal is to monitor traffic load and quality,” says our tipster, who asked to remain anonymous to preserve their connections at Apple.
Apple is using its HTTP Live Streaming technology, which requires a Mac, iPhone or iPad. The live broadcast begins at 10:00 a.m. PST at www.apple.com.
HTTP Live Streaming is open standards-based streaming technology. As well as streaming live video, it supports video on demand with encryption and authentication, Apple says. It is built into QuickTime X and iOS. Apple is currently submitting HTTP Live Streaming as a proposed Internet standard.

Ranking the digital living room barbarians: Netflix rules; Apple, Google others likely to struggle | ZDNet
september 2010 by gugelproductions
And it doesn’t stand a chance. Welcome to the conundrum that’s the digital living room. Apple tried to portray Apple TV as something other than a set-top box, but it lacks apps. Therefore, it’s a glorified Roku box. Meanwhile, Apple lacks the content. On the TV front, only Fox and ABC are signed up.
The clear winner in this Apple TV gig is Netflix. Jobs touted “the best implementation of Netflix,” but that’s not a big deal. The real deal is that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and his company have navigated the digital entertainment landscape better than anyone. Netflix’s ability to navigate the turbulent entertainment business is absolutely brilliant.

In July 2002, Appled filed a patent for a “Breathing Status LED Indicator” (No. US 6,658,577 B2). They described it as a “blinking effect of the sleep-mode indicator in accordance with the present invention mimics the rhythm of breathing which is psychologically appealing.”
The average respiratory rate for adults is 12-20 breaths per minute, which is the rate that the sleep-indicator light fades in and out on most Apple laptops. Older models such as the Macintosh PowerBook, however, use a blinking LED indicator, with discrete pulses in one-second intervals.
