NBC lays out 2012 London Olympics broadcast plan on TV, internet, apps and in 3D (video) -- Engadget
Love it or hate it, we're stuck with NBC as our Olympics broadcaster in the US, and the company recently laid out its full plans for the 2012 Olympics in London this summer. The good news first: NBCOlympics.com will live stream every single event (they'll even be on YouTube, and in the UK the BBC has its own plans) for the first time ever including streams of each of its channels, encompassing 3,500 total hours and the awarding of all 302 medals. The bad news is that if you're not a cable subscriber, many of those hours will not be available to you, and even if you are, you're looking at a (likely convoluted) authentication sign-in process. That's a little bit of pain, sure, but it should mean what we've been asking for -- the ability to watch all Olympics events as they happen, not tape delayed for prime time after viewing grainy bootleg streams over the internet. Also new for the internet are multiple streams for the same event, so for example, viewers can select a particular gymnastics apparatus or track and field event at will.

Fox, CBS, NBC Sue Dish Network Over AutoHop Ad-Skipper - Hollywood Reporter
Fox, CBS and NBCUniversal separately have sued Dish Network over its new AutoHop service, which allows consumers to skip television ads. At the same time, Dish has filed its own lawsuit against all four broadcast networks seeking a declaration as to the legality of its new service.
Fox issued the following statement Thursday: "We were given no choice but to file suit against one of our largest distributors, Dish Network, because of their surprising move to market a product with the clear goal of violating copyrights and destroying the fundamental underpinnings of the broadcast television ecosystem. Their wrongheaded decision requires us to take swift action in order to aggressively defend the future of free, over-the-air television."

Driving mobile app installs with the App Center - Facebook Developers
We’re excited that developers are beginning to realize the power of integrating Facebook into their mobile apps. As of today, seven of the top 10 grossing iOS apps and five of the top 10 Android apps have integrated with Facebook.

Facebook sends over 160 million people to mobile apps each month through news feed and timeline. Soon, with the App Center, it will be easier than ever to drive mobile app installs and reach the over 500 million people using Facebook on mobile devices.

Installing apps from a mobile device
People will be able to access the App Center from Facebook’s iOS app, Android app and m.facebook.com. After someone clicks the install button on your mobile app detail page, they’ll be logged in and redirected to your app.

If someone already installed your native app, we automatically open your app, passing in an access token for the authenticated user. If they haven’t, we immediately show the user the install page in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

YouTube's Video Views Are Falling -- By Design | Digital - Advertising Age
Since December, views on YouTube have dropped 28%, and March views are only slightly above what they were a year ago, startling for a site accustomed to breakneck growth.

It's an intended consequence of the Google-owned site's shift from a video search engine filled with snack-size content to a full-fledged, couch-potato-optimized entertainment destination. At YouTube, the "view" is out and "engagement" is in.

After investing $100 million to create content channels, YouTube's focus has shifted from directing viewers to videos of skateboarding dogs to enticing them into longer, more engaging videos—the kind that are, not incidentally, more appealing to advertisers.

On March 15, YouTube altered its recommendation system to make the time spent with a video or channel a stronger indicator than a click in determining which videos to surface to a user.

Americans Now Spend More Time On Facebook Mobile Than Its Website | TechCrunch
First showing up in March, these ads are marked “Sponsored, and could be about a friend Liking a company’s Page, a game your friend started playing, or a post by a Page you already Like. Seeing them occasionally isn’t bad, but if Facebook shows too many it could make people angry and less likely to visit.

Now Facebook must walk the tightrope. Inject too many ads in the mobile news feed and people will stop visiting, inject too few and it will lose money. No pressure, there’s just a half a billion mobile users watching.

Disruptions: Facebook's Real-Life 'Spidey Sense' - NYTimes.com
Imagine if you had a superpower that would allow you to peer into the future of the Internet? It’s a pretty nerdy power compared to Spider-Man’s web-slinging, but you could use this superhuman ability to see what would be popular soon, and in some instances, change the future.

Facebook actually has this power. Because it connects Facebook users to more than nine million apps and services through Facebook Connect, the Open Graph developer platform, and the hundreds of millions of like buttons that perforate Web pages across the Internet, the company can see what people are using. Facebook is more tapped into the pulse of people online than any company on the planet.

Disney’s ESPN in Talks With Apple for Expanded TV Access - Bloomberg
ESPN, the most-watched U.S. sports network is making more programming available online and on mobile devices to reach customers watching TV in new formats. The network now provides subscribers ESPN3, a digital channel that’s part of the WatchESPN app, to subscribers through Microsoft Corp. “We’re a platform-agnostic content company,” Bratches, the network’s executive vice president of affiliate and advertising sales, said today in an interview. “To the extent that in the future there’s an opportunity with Apple to authenticate through the pay-TV food chain as we’re doing with Microsoft, that’s something that we will participate in.”

Defining Earned, Owned And Paid Media | Forrester Blogs
The terms "earned, owned and paid (aka bought) media" have become very popular in the interactive marketing space today. In fact, taken together they can be applied as a simple way for interactive marketers to categorize and ultimately prioritize all of the media options they have today. Nokia was an early pioneer in this space (see Dan Goodall's posts on the subject). They now categorize all of their global interactive media as earned, owned or bought. Many agencies, including R/GA, Critical Mass, Sapient and Isobar (my former employer) also use the model to help develop digital strategies. On top of that, many industry leaders such as Pete Blackshaw, Fred Wilson and David Armano have written about the subject.

Americans watched 37 billion online videos last month | Internet & Media - CNET News
Across the U.S., 181 million Internet users tracked by ComScore caught a total of 37 billion videos in April. That means 84.5 percent of the U.S. Internet audience viewed an online video, and the average person spent 21.8 hours doing so for the month.
Grabbing 157.7 million viewers, Google was the top site for video watching, thanks mostly to YouTube. Yahoo came in second place with 53.6 million viewers, followed by Vevo with 49.5 million, Facebook with 44.3 million, and Microsoft with 42.8 million.
Online video site Hulu was lower down the list, with 28.2 million viewers for the month. But it came in second behind Google for the total amount of time spent by the average viewer in April, at 3.8 hours, ComScore said.

Younger viewers say hello to online video in 2012 - Inside AdWords
Finally, our research showed that online campaigns added much-needed frequency to help increase brand recall for the light TV viewer. Combining YouTube and GDN drove a 27 percent increase in impressions, since even light TV viewers exposed to both TV and online ads saw more online ads than TV.

Overall, the results suggest that adding YouTube and the GDN to your TV network campaigns improves effectiveness in several powerful ways, helping to:
Reach a valuable, complementary, younger audience
Add much-needed frequency to light TV viewers
Deliver media more evenly across light and heavy TV viewers, reducing waste
Do all of this both efficiently and affordably

Elapsed Time: FIRST! Two sharing vectors for you to exploit.
While most apps seem to focus enthusiastically on broadcasting what your friends have read, watched, etc there are two aspects of social discovery which today are being underexplored:

1) Tell me what my friends HAVEN'T seen yet
Various user research I've done suggests there's a sharing stigma around being last to the party - sharing something with a bunch of friends only to hear back "yeah saw that two days ago." Given this, I believe there's potential value in prompting me to share - generally or directed to certain people - with the call to action "Hey, probably hasn't seen this yet. Share with them?"

HBO's 'Game Of Thrones' On Track To Be Crowned Most Pirated Show Of 2012 - Forbes
With its popularity swelling and no easy way to watch for viewers without cable, HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” is inspiring massive levels of piracy, according to numbers from the BitTorrent-tracking and analysis firm Big Champagne. By the firm’s rough estimate, the second season of the show has been downloaded more than 25 million times from public torrent trackers since it began in early April, and its piracy hit a new peak following April 30th’s episode, with more than 2.5 million downloads in a day.

“It certainly appears to be the most pirated show of the year,” says John Robinson, a senior media analyst with Big Champagne. He says it’s too early to measure definitively, but the company’s data so far as well as the popularity rankings on download site the Pirate Bay point to “Game of Thrones” as filesharers’ favorite show of 2012. “The fact that it’s consistently at the top of the Pirate Bay’s top one hundred TV show chart seems like a pretty in-your-face leading indicator of the huge volume at which this is being shared.”

Netflix launches sexy new web-based video player — Online Video News
The only downside of the new player seems to be that there can be some issues with Chrome on Mac OS – a warning screen told me to switch to Safari or Firefox for the best viewing experience. However, a quick test showed that basic playback was working just fine via OS X Chrome. In Race to Win Social Video, Is One App Gaming the System Too Much? - Mike Isaac - Social - AllThingsD
Facebook declined to comment to AllThingsD on the near instantaneous rise on April 24, although it did shrug off the date in question to the New York Times: “The popularity of videos and other user-generated content on Facebook is not new, so it’s no surprise that social video apps are growing as friends share with each other and as more developers experiment with this type of content on Facebook.”
In a tweet on Saturday, TechCrunch writer Josh Constine noted that the sudden burst of growth on April 24 was due to a reporting error from Facebook to third-party app tracking site AppData. That also seems reasonable, although doesn’t fully explain the sudden traffic explosion that occurred over that two- to three-week period.
Whatever actually happened, Socialcam saw the chance to seize its moment.

Time Warner Cable and Viacom Settle Lawsuit Over iPad Television Streaming - Mac Rumors
Time Warner Cable and Viacom have settled their legal entanglements regarding Time Warner's streaming of Viacom video content on its iPad app, according to the New York Times.
The breakthrough comes as a result of a settlement between Time Warner Cable and Viacom, which owns cable channels like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV and others. For months there had been a heated dispute over whether the cable company should have access to Viacom programs through its TWCable TV app.

On Wednesday, Viacom said that the companies had agreed "to resolve their pending litigations" and that "all of Viacom’s programming will now be available to Time Warner Cable subscribers for in-home viewing via Internet protocol-enabled devices such as iPads."

For Facebook-boosted video apps, reality checks in — Tech News and Analysis
When Facebook made it easy to share what videos you were watching, companies like Socialcam, Metacafe, DailyMotion and Viddy rocketed up the app-charts and saw a sharp increase in the usage and downloads of these apps. Of course, with this friction-less sharing actions came howls of complaints from Facebook’s users.

Well, it seems the party has come to an end. The reality check is eerily reminiscent of the decline in attention for social news-reader applications. AppData.com statistics show a sharp decline in the number of daily active users of these services.

LG shows off the best Google TV yet, with motion controls, dual-core CPU, 3D | VentureBeat
What truly differentiates LG’s Google TV entries is the company’s motion-control “Magic Remote.” Waving LG’s remote around felt smoother than using Sony or Logitech’s Google TV trackpads, and it was surprisingly accurate. The remote communicates with an infrared device embedded at the front of the television, similar to the Nintendo Wii’s sensor bar. The Magic Remote supports gestures and it also has a built-in microphone for voice commands.

The Magic Remote itself feels nice, with a rounded portion that makes it comfy in your hand. There is a scroll wheel on the front, along with the most commonly used Google TV buttons, and a full QWERTY thumb keyboard on the back.

A VC: Easy Come Easy Go
just read that a lot of the social news reader traffic publishers like Washington Post and The Guardian were getting from Facebook has dropped off dramatically.

Next we will read that the traffic social video apps get from Facebook has dropped dramatically.

All of this reminds me of the big drop in traffic SEO driven sites deal with every time Google does an algorithm change.

SEO and Facebook timeline integration is "best practice" on the Internet. You should do both. They can be great free acquisition channels. But they are not great retention channels. Because easy come easy go.

Mobile App Growth Led by Video Sharing: YouTube in the Crosshairs?
Back in 2006, Google acquired the buzzy YouTube for $1.65 billion after its own Google Video service could not keep pace.  Now it appears new “cool kids” in the form of Viddy and SocialCam threaten to disintermediate the web juggernaut’s acquisition.  In a recent Forbes article, Eric Jackson laid out a hypothesis that the new breed of social companies, typified by Instagram, view mobile as their primary, often exclusive platform.  “They don’t even think of launching via a web site.  They assume, over time, people will use their mobile applications almost entirely instead of websites.”  He concludes that “we will never have Web 3.0, because the Web’s dead.”  Just consider that it’s now possible to capture, edit, share and view engaging, meaningful videos among friends, all from your phone, without ever touching a computer.  In this perspective, a threat to YouTube begins to feels real.

The chart compares how daily interactive consumption has changed over the last 18 months between the web (both desktop and mobile web) and mobile native apps.  For the web, shown in green, we built a model using publicly available data from comScore and Alexa.  For mobile application usage, shown in blue, we used Flurry Analytics data, which tracks anonymous sessions across more than 140,000 applications.  We estimate this accounts for approximately one third of all mobile application activity, which we scaled-up accordingly for this analysis.

Want to reinvent TV? Don’t forget the TV — Online Video News
A TV that consists of many little displays working together, a TV that’s always on, a TV the size of your living room wall and a TV that obeys you like a well-trained dog: That’s a lot to swallow, especially if you’ve thought of the next wave of apps as innovation in the TV space.

However, it may be time to think bigger, and leave some of the assumptions of what TV is — and what TV sets are — behind. “TV has to start defining a future for itself,” Thexton told me. And that future may not fit into a 60- or 70-inch bezel.

HOLLYN-wood (Norman, that is) » Do We Really Want To OWN Our Media?
, said the following fascinating thing. “People don’t want to own media anymore.” People, she said, want to view (and, I assume, rent), not own.

This flies in the face of the prevailing wisdom of only two years ago, which said that people wanted to hold onto their media, that they would rather download music and films than stream them. But that is clearly no longer the case.  I prefer to listen to music on Spotify, rather than download it to my iTunes library. I prefer to watch movies on Netflix rather than buy the DVD or download. So it’s not only physical media that is dying, but bits and bytes on my drives.  Yeah, I like to download things on occasion, or for my classroom use, but I confess that I’m an outlier. The DVD of Matrix that I lent my daughter is still sitting in her internal DVD drive.  Not only does that mean that I don’t need it to watch, but it also means that she doesn’t have the need of her DVD drive. Mix CDs are gone.  Playlists are in.

Microsoft Xbox Plays More Web Video Than iPhone, iPad, Android - Peter Kafka - Media - AllThingsD
That is, more people are watching Web stuff on Microsoft’s machine than on the iPad, iPhone or any Android machine, anywhere. And when it comes to home viewing, competitors like Apple TV, Google TV and Roku are so far behind they’re not even competitors.
This data comes from Freewheel, an online video ad company, and it comes with caveats. We’ll get to those below. But first, take a look:

Decline Of Reader Apps Likely Due To News Feed Changes, Shows Facebook Controls The Traffic Faucet | TechCrunch
The decline from April 11th to April 16th may have been due to Facebook showing no form of the “trending articles” box, and the modest growth starting on April 17th may have been to the new version starting to appear. Similar user count fluctuations to those that The Guardian also impacted The Washington Post, The Independent, and many other apps.  Regardless of your opinion on auto-sharing, discontent with it wouldn’t manifest as a sudden cross-reader app user count decline.

Facebook Social Readers Are All Collapsing
The Washington Post was the first publication to experiment with a "frictionless" social reader app, which launched last year. If you use Facebook you've probably come across it: it manifests as a clustered list of stories that are almost completely unrelated except for the fact that they all come from the same publication.
If you decide to click on a link it doesn't take you to the story. Instead, it shunts you over to a signup screen for Social Reader, which you have to accept if you want to make it through to the site. This forceful behavior is how the Post's reader app gained tens of millions of users in a few short months; it's also how, as Jeff Bercovici at Forbes pointed out this morning, the Washington Post seems to have worn its readers — or Facebook — out. They're annoyed, and they're quitting in droves (Update below):

Dish Claims Netflix, Apple, Amazon Hurt Value of AMC Shows - Peter Kafka - Media - AllThingsD
Most of the big TV programmers seem to agree with Ergen’s point when it comes to free repeats of recent shows. Which is why they have been taking stuff that they’ve been giving away via outlets like Hulu, and either pulling them off the Web entirely, or requiring that customers “authenticate” — prove that they’re paying for cable or satellite TV —  in order to see them without delay. Note that Dish was the first pay-TV service to participate in the Fox authentication plan last summer. (Fox is owned by News Corp., as is this Web site.)
TV programmers don’t seem to think that iTunes’ and Amazon’s a la carte sales of shows that aired the night before are devaluing their product. Because they’re still selling them, and by all accounts there doesn’t seem to be a ton of volume for those episodes. If there was, advertisers would squawk long before pay-TV providers would.

Guide: Complete the loop to grow your app with Open Graph - Facebook Developers
1. Start with your existing audience and provide them a good reason to add your app to their timeline

The most important step in getting your Open Graph implementation off the ground is to get your existing users publishing stories. The sooner you have a large and engaged audience publishing content back to Facebook the quicker your Open Graph integration will drive discovery by new users and re-engagement with your app.

Look for ways to engage your existing user base to provide you the additional permissions needed to publish Open Graph actions to Facebook.

What's Next in TV: Machinima, The No.1 Entertainment Network on YouTube
The opening episode of Season 2 of Bite Me, in March of this year, has been watched nearly 1.5 million times so far. That's less than half the 3.5 million viewers who tuned in to episode 1 of Mad Men series 5 on TV, also in March. But remember that Machinima has a narrower target audience: males 18-34. 1.5 million views in that context is very valuable to advertisers who want to reach that demographic. Plus, Machinima has proven that it can get the big numbers: its most successful original series so far has been Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which finished last year and attracted 4-6 million views per episode.

Ben Elowitz: Content Is No Longer King - Ben Elowitz - Voices - AllThingsD
Put someone in charge of audience development.
Give them latitude to think about the interplay between distribution and content, so that they can marry the two. Like a head of programming for a cable network, they should be tasked to realize the full potential of your digital channels. They should support the delivery of your content, and they should also provide back pressure to your content creators. Don’t merge it into your editorial jobs — that’s too precarious. Make it its own discipline.

Rumor: Hulu Will Soon Require Viewers To Have A Cable Subscription [Update: It'll Happen, But Not "Soon"] | TechCrunch
Update: We just talked to a source close to Hulu. According to our source, Hulu and its content providers have talked about this move toward authentication since 2009. Our source noted that Hulu has no interest in being a first mover here and that a requirement for authentication is likely still a few years out. Hulu, however, does want to be a good partner and may have to give in to its partners’ pressure soon or later. Even though an authentication requirement isn’t likely to happen right away, though, our source notes that what could happen relatively soon is that the content providers could require longer delays before their shows become available on the service for non-subscribers. Cable subscribers, under this model, would get access to a show on Hulu the next day, while non-subscribers would have to wait at least 30 days. This model would likely also apply to Hulu Plus subscribers.
